I agree if someone were to play a soundbite of Buckley's Popeye out of context and ask me to guess what character it was supposed to be I couldn't do it
I am rather impressed that Popeye was once voiced by a woman. That is some cleaver range i must say, it is easy to tell on most cases when a woman is voicing a male character but with Mae Questel, I can’t even hear a trace of that. Tom Kenny had real potential as Popeye, it is a shame that the movie never came out.
Jack Mercer. He took what Castello invented, yet he gave it more personality and fexability. So yeah, Jack Mercer is the best Popeye. Major props to him for voicing Popeye from 1935 to the 1980s.
One of the things that set the Fleischer Brothers cartoons apart was that they were post dubbed. Due to that, the voice actors were able to do such things as Popeye's under-his-breath comments.
Mae Questel voiced Popeye??? She was Betty Boop! There's no way that's right. She voiced Olive Oil, but I saw another video of her talking about voicing Popeye. She said that she did the best she could and the engineers modified the tape to make her voice in a lower register. I never would have guessed. The original 2 voice actors for Popeye were definitely the best.
It's not unusual to use technical tricks to modify a voice. As an example, in Looney Toons Mel Blanc used the same voice for Daffy Duck and Sylvester The Cat, but with Daffy they sped his voice up a bit.
@Anthony Tanner I know, but much like Mel Blanc for Porky Pig or Wayne Allwine for Mickey Mouse, it's a case where Jack didn't originate the voice but he did perfect it.
Jack Mercer was the best. he appeared in the most famous episodes. AND, he was also the head writer of Popeye cartoons. So, he was able to do the voice in a special way since he was also the writer.
Jack Mercer also did the voice of the naval officer in the cartoons "The Mighty Navy" and "Blunder Below," while an enlisted man onboard the USS Pennsyltucky. Why the one-eyed sailor didn't just stay in the Coast Guard, "Popeye Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves," was never explained.
Jack Mercer is the hands-down favorite for me. He's the definitive voice of Popeye. I always found the 1935 cartoon featuring Floyd Buckley to be very interesting, since I was a kid. I believe it's the only example of his work as Popeye.
@@GeeTrieste Robin Williams "portrayal" of Popeye was spot-on. His voice wasn't, but very few people CAN do that voice and that movie was cheesy enough then to have to sit through 2 hours of hearing a spot-on Popeye voice.

Jack Mercer is the best with William Costello as a definite Second place. The voice seems to match the character really well. It all sounds fluid and comes clean. Jack Mercer benefitting from sounding extra clean. Popeye is quite thin, so a higher pitch voice seems to work with his looks better. That's typically how it works. The others who have a lower pitch managed due to it at least being a bright sound and that is necessary in the character I feel, but that higher pitch is essential to sound just right. Vowel shape and just playing the role and essence of the character is done really well. They are by far what makes me adore Popeye as much as I do.
My favorite will always be Bill Costello although Jack Mercer had more range. I do remember the one cartoon when Floyd Buckley voiced Popeye. It was odd because it was so unlike Popeye and sounded more like a slurring wino. The other voices were fine but I loved those early Popeye cartoons and the Popeye character. As the cartoons progressed, Popeye became more a victim and was useless until he ate his spinach. In the early ones, the spinach just gave him that extra boost but the character could still hold his own.

With points for originality, Costello. He also has the deepest low end. You might enjoy Mercer the most, but its his impression of Costello's Popeye. There's no way to know what he'd've come up with if there was no Costello before him.
Jack Mercer is to Popeye, what James Earl Jones is to Vader. Nothing beats the original. Sure, you can get some great impressions here and there.. But still.

Whenever I heard Mae Questel as a kid, I always assumed they sped the record up to fit the runtime, or something. I guess it was a lady all along!
