      If that's the case, you should try reading a transcript of literally any speech Donald Trump has made at his rallies. They are hilariously illegible. An important part of rhetoric that many critically-thinking people ignore is the ability to evoke a "general feeling" in speech, despite - possibly - having extremely little content. Is it not the case that the person you are responding to effectively got their message across, despite being completely devoid of content or eloquence?

      I'm just going to point out you clearly don't play pokemon cards, and just don't like rudy/investors. Primal Clash has 0 cards that are played besides some occasional un/commons worth fifty-cents. I'm all for printing cards to make it cheaper for the players too, but this doesn't actually do anything for players like you seem to think it is doing. Roaring Skies i can understand since shaymin ex was over $40, but even the reprint of that set only dropped the card down a few dollars. Just saying...

      There's pretty much four faces to Pokemon cards... Theres the investors like Rudy, competitive players, collectors (more on an individual card basis), and then people who fall the awkward category of buying the occasional pack every once in a while, mostly filled with kids. Its really hard for pokemon to satisfy everyone, especially when the player demographic can directly conflict with investors. Specifically talking reprints. The fact they do it without warning can be confusing, or exciting, depending on which group you fall it. You cannot blame him for feeling this way when he pretty much makes a living off of predictions and statistics, and when Pokemon does irrational stuff like this, it confuses you and stresses you out. cut him some slack.

    reprints are great for the average player, gets them staple cards cheaper so they can get into the game and makes the threshold $ to get into the game less; which really benefits the company in the long run( more players more customers) . Yes it hurts "investors" and horders and speculators, but that's fine , you are not the intended beneficiary for any of these products in the first place. The more of you stop speculating and trying to manipulate the secondary market in TCG's the better it is for the community.

    • @davesmith4646
      @davesmith4646 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      OrignalSithlord I don't think they should stop investing, they should just stop crying when Pokémon wants to do a reprint or something for the staple cards to be cheaper, the market doesn't revolve around investors after all

      The 'investors' hoarders and speculators include those local game stores that host your weekly events, the online sites that let people order singles to make their decks without opening infinite boosters digging, and people who dropped a few hundred dollars on a deck and would get devastated if the value dropped to zero.
      In the end what we are playing with is pieces of cardboard, it has the value we assign it and a big part of that is confidence just like US dollars are just pieces of paper and what keeps them afloat is confidence. Just printing more so more people have them is as damaging for card games as it is for currency, if you look through failed physical card games overprinting is overwhelmingly one of the reasons they flop.
      You think reprinting helps the average player? Maybe in the short term. As a long term policy it reduces incentive for resalers and collectors to buy those cards. You know what happens when those aggregators aren't investing? The game dies. How you ask? Here is one example. Say the big resellers go out of card set XYZ because it's going to be reprinted so much there is going to be no value on the cards, they don't stock up on it and they don't break it down for singles. Now you as a player want to make a sick deck and need the cards to build it. You go online to order the singles but WHOOPS, the big retailers aren't selling them because they didn't bother breaking them down since the EV is so low. You go to buy them off ebay except WHOOPS, there aren't really any listings because the cards are worthless and it's not even worth the shipping cost to sellers.
      Now what is your only option? Buy boxes and boxes of boosters at retail price hoping you get the cards you need. Is this supposed to be cheaper? All that cost is basically just throwing money out too because you aren't going to recoup any of it selling the cards you got that you didn't need.All this yelling about the secondary market when fools don't even realize that the only reason they can build decks without opening hundreds of boosters is because of the very same secondary market they demonize.
      This is just one example of how overprinting killed many many TCG's and CCG's in the long term. People cheering these things fail to grasp even the most basic economics involved and just blindly cheer because some card they needed got a few bucks cheaper right now.

    • @plumber1337
      @plumber1337 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ye Li
      With so many set rotation on MTG, the short term is what should be analysed, not the long term, because without short term players will start to leave the game entirely.
      The problem with "investors" that you're not talking about is that major sealed product buyers like Rudy, that THEN SELL THEM ALSO AS SEALED instead of single, are holding on a product that could go to the single item sellers which could be selling you what you need to use at the moment that they're still being printed.
      YES, I know that Rudy also sells singles, but he holds a lot of sealed product, which he then will sell as SEALED product, not those singles that you're talking about, which you may come to pay 2* or 3* the retail value when it comes out of print, which you COULD have gotten when it was still being printed.
      It will happen as you described: "Buy boxes and boxes of boosters at retail price hoping you get the cards you need", but instead of paying retail, you're going to pay X more times.
      Good luck with opening the sealed product that you paid 400dollars that is now out of print and you could have paid 100dollars.
      Sealed product sellers will NOT open them to sell ONLY SINGLES because they'll lose 1/4 to 3/4 of their "investment", when they can gain 2* because it is not printed anymore and you STILL need it.

    • @JRmarksmen
      @JRmarksmen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no, if you print too much you devalue the product by a lot (and value is one of the reason people play), if you don't print enough then the average player can't get involved and you lose your base players. One of the reasons i liked those expeditions or masterpiece or what ever in MTG (Magic the Gathering), is that you allow a slow increase in the market that is not really noticeable to the collectors, but it does cause a more product to go out to help slowly lower the price (assuming demand for it stays the same or grows very slowly with the rate that wizards currently has them printing at).
      If I was wizards I would use eternal masters and modern masters to my advantage by keeping a somewhat limited run, or releasing a little bit every month (total amount per year would stay the same but it would be more spread out keeping the box prices near msrp). Then I would eleminate the mythic rarity just for these two sets, but expand the number of different types of rares greatly (instead of 53 different rares think more like 100+) which would include a a lot of the expensive cards. This high number of rares would allow you to reprint expensive cards while decreasing the prices on them slowly over time.
      A slow decrease in price would not hurt most stores or single card resellers as long as they maintain a good turn over rate. Those that buy cards and try to hold on to them for a long time hoping to profit off of them (hoarders and investors) would be the most hurt. Common players would feel no effect because if you sell the cards once you are no longer want that deck the price change from when you bought to when you sold (or trade value) would be minimal and other cards would have also decreased keeping it roughly in line with other cards.

    I’ve really enjoyed being able to dig through your history of videos since discovering channel recently. What you discuss here has been true now for 3 years, and Pokémon is still at an all-time high. I suppose demand has surged just that much. I know from your more recent videos to expect even more print volume over the next 1.5 years or so - I wonder if demand can continue to grow to keep pace with production from an investment perspective. Very interesting stuff!

    Hi Rudy, I have been watching your videos for a while and would love to hear your opinion on this matter:
    How do you feel about the new version 3 mystery power boxes by mj holding company? Also, how do you feel about this company in general?
    They claim their new mystery power boxes have better chances (1 in 20 chance to pull a vintage pack vs the old 1 in 50) However, having watched almost every new mystery power box v3 opening on TH-cam, it seems all that everyone is getting are x2 furious fist, x2 primal clash and whatever the hell is taped to the front of the pack. HOWEVER, when Derium's Pokemon did a $625 opening on these new Mystery Power boxes, they seem to pull a variety of packs and vintage packs in every box. That shit is so shady. Do you think mj holding company strategically sent Derium's Pokemon "custom" boxes with good pack combinations to trick people?

    It seems like most companies are moving more towards strategies that support players far more than collectors and investors. It is unfortunate that this is the case for those that are investors and collectors, but it is what it is. There's really no way to have it both ways, and supporting players is making the companies more money, so that's where they're going.

    I've played pokemon for a long time, made it to worlds several times. I can confidently say the secondary market has never been a major concern for the pokemon company, ever. The game continues to exist through strong turnout at organized play events and the continued success of the video games leading to casual sales. The company has always wanted to support that organized play demographic by making cards fairly affordable and easy to get. The first major dip in turnout after the initial hype and downturn was in 2006 when the undisputed king of decks LBS cost well over 300 dollars to construct and people who couldn't afford to play it just stopped showing up. The company has been combating this for years with their ex tin releases, each set of 3 tins released usually contains at least one if not two expensive tournament standard ex's whose price has raised over 30 dollars.
    This game isn't magic and out of format cards will always tank in price once they rotate unless you are talking about 10-15 year old sets because the game is driven by play not collecting. The company is reprinting sets which is great because cards like shaymin ex are required in 95% of standard decks with the price reaching over 100 dollars per card needing at least 2 if not 3. The fastest way for them to kill the game is to put that kind of entry barrier in place to be competitive. They know this and have taken steps to increase the supply of these cards without just reprinting them in a tin which would tank the price from 100 to 10 for collectors overnight. This was a well thought out strategy to bring down the price while also not gut checking people who own these cards or paid a high price for them.

How many variant number #1's ya want son? the Timmy in me screams all of 'em! 8 million copies of X-men #1 were sold with 5 different covers (?). what a huge bubble it turned out to be. turns out you can use comic paper for insulation or kindling. there will never be value there. thanks again.

    My local walmart no longer carries Pokemon cards, my local target doesnt either. Nintendo/Pokemon company make 90% of their income from collectors who purchase booster boxes directly. A popular set like roaring skies will drop in price temporarily, but in a few months the boxes, due to the cards IN the set, it will go back up to premium. This is just a re release because us late in fans who just started collecting again from the nostalgia trip Evolutions was gets to get some of these NEEDED cards from a pivotal sets.

    Does TPCi even announce sets that become out of print? XY-Primal Clash hasn't rotated yet so I believe it's fair to print them while they're supported in the main format.
    With Expanded being a moderately younger format, they might be 2nd printing to-be-rotated sets to future-proof Expanded's price range.

    Hey Rudy random question. Urza block and Marcadian masquerade block. got super ass expensive. What am I missing. That was when I was first really able to buy cards of my own vs getting older kids cards. Wanted to get a box of masquerade but at 500$ for a box yikes. If anyone knows why let me know. What cards spiked or what not sad I can't afford my nostalgia sets. but can get fallen empires for 120$ a box. i know I know its "fallen" empires

    From a players perspective: This is great. Easier to get a hold of cards that are good for play. Either they are cheaper as singles or the packs themselves will be cheaper since they have been reprinted.
    From a casual collectors perspective: great for the same reasons. Cards I always wanted that were too expensive are now affordable.
    From a full blown collectors perspective (what I am transitioning to): This kind of sucks. Part of what I have enjoyed about collecting the cards is knowing I have something valuable. While I have no intentions of selling my collection, I like seeing how wanted they are by others. I have just began to collect every sealed pack artwork from my favourite sets and seeing as they won't increase in price much in the coming years kind of sucks. Part of the awesome thing of collecting is selling things once they reach high value so you can collect new stuff! It sucks seeing things getting reprinted especially when they said they were out of print.

    I like those PKMN booster box sizes. We can fix the Modern Masters issue by making it non-draftable packs like pokemon and just putting in valuable reprints. Hell, charge the same amount, but at least the ratio of good rares/uncommons would be higher than draftable packs. Boo to draft bombs since they bomb financially.

    To be honest if they just stick to ONE reprint wave like theyre doing with Roaring skies, just my two cents but I personally have no problem it. In time they will go back up as its only a limited wave I assume.
    Also one other thing I dont know if you've ever mentioned though is that because Pokemon is targeted for younger audiences and the people that watch the anime like many others have said, the market absorbs product with much less pickiness. Unlike Mtg and Yugioh, the criteria for a card to be deemed desirable is not just limited to card playability but just the card being "_______". Even if the card is shit it is still desirable to many because of that. We can tell because unlike shitty Yugioh secrets or shitty Mtg mythic foils that might as well be toilet paper, Ex's and Full Arts usually never go below the $3 ish line.
    Long story short, shit cards in pokemon are still desriable.
    There will be a temporary dip for sure in value of the Primal Clash boxes for sure, but I'm pretty confident it impact the targeted sets permanently.

    Good! I'm glad "investors" will move on from Pokemon! It is tough to support people that just horde a child's product as an investment. Don't get me wrong I invest in magic and play Pokemon. My Vintage deck has foils and altered Power, and my Pokemon is foil with full art. I paid for that, I can buy my own stuff unlike a small child. What I can't get behind is a kid not being able to play or compete with other kids because his parents can't or won't buy a $70.00 card! let them reprint all of it and make it affordable to kids (7-13, the true player base) let investors move on to something else. Go on kids enjoy Pokemon!

    I think the thing to look out for now is if they reprint a set that's not in Standard Tournament Rotation. Roaring Skies and Ancient Origins are both still legally playable, but if something like a Black & White set or Flashfire got a reprint, then there'd be something to worry about.

      @TheReal_birbwizard 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @mrbenmouse

      Expanded format, which goes from B&W series onward, and Unlimited format, which is any set ever released, though championship tournament playing is done with Standard.

    • @TheReal_birbwizard
      @TheReal_birbwizard 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok that's interesting are any cards valuable because of those formats or is there some kind of meta? I'm a very casual magic player I don't really look at tournament results or decklists I just buy cards I like and play them so I don't even know what most of the stuff is worth or good.

    About the issue if this is a straight up reprint or old inventory left around: won't that be revealed by the dates printed on the card, when the first boxes hit stores? I mean Primal was originally released in '15, the last print run was probably sometime '16. So if the card say 1996-2015/6, that's old inventory, if it ends with 2017, that's a brand new print run. That should shed a little bit more light on the new direction by the Pokemon Company. Also, someone said this below and I totally agree with it: Sets should be printed while they are included in the standard rotation.

    • @davesmith4646
      @davesmith4646 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lantaar cards are printed with the copyright date, not the printing date, thus that would not work

    • @DonJay00001
      @DonJay00001 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I know, but still. If the copyright date says 2015/6 that means they were printed that year, since the copyright date always displays the year of production. But if it says copyright 2017, that should mean it's a new printing, not old inventory left behind, since the first "reprint" with Roaring Skies happened this year, I highly doubt they were planning this since last year. And since Primal Clash wasn't the most popular sets, it would be interesting to see if these reprint initiative are actual new print runs or just leftover inventory that went through a rebranding.

    • @davesmith4646
      @davesmith4646 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lantaar not exactly, some sun and moon cards were printed in 2016 however they continued printing in 2017, yet all sun and moon cards have a copyright date of 2017, copyright is not what year it's printed.

    The company seems to compete with the little sellers either that or they don't care about them at all. I'll go with the latter. Profit is the goal. Reprinting does not only stabilise the price for the sets but also give them control of prices and what do we know about large companies? They want to keep control of their products and by controlling the price, it allows other/newer players to join without paying a premium for low stock sets. Whether this is good or not is subjective depending on which side you are on:
    - Great for short term casual players who do not 'collect' extensively.
    - Painful for long term collectors
    - Painful for investors
    For me, as a collector I think this drives people out of the hobby in the long run as they are literally burning their cash by collecting cards (or anything for that matter) that gets a reprint. But why would they do such a thing even though its obvious? Again, as outlined above they DO NOT CARE, in the case of Pokemon, their target audience are young kids who buy individual booster packs with their pocket money not investors. Every generation cycle that lasts around 2/3 years, kids move onto a different hobby during the time and new kids enter the craze and the cycle restarts. In the end its about profit. And these companies are ruthless...

    The pokemon industry shifted in the late 90's when they changed the card game from a ccg to a tcg and announced they would reprint anything and everything to keep prices down. They didn't just suddenly start changing. They have long been changed and I am in disbelief that you invested in pokemon in the first place.
    Great video as always, and for the love of god, drop pokemon.

  • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
    @EdwintheMagicEngineer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, I've always figured the companies making this stuff would eventually get thin margins and start doing deals with the devil to keep the profit coming in. I always figured MTG would eventually die from WoTC having a comfortable profit stream that shrinks and they give on their moral stance (not overprinting, etc.)
    So for me it's not surprising. But I've also been a lot more convinced Magic was going to die many times before and it didn't. Far too many people love it.
    What might happen is a volatile death... than a later resurrection from smaller investors and passionate people. Kinda like a pheonix rising from the ashes but connecting more strongly with the player/collector base and not trying to go so big.
    Who knows. Either way... they just better damn well not destroy collections by printing too much "out of print" stuff.

    Something you forgot to mention in the roaring skies video is that the reason it was reprinted was that it had not finished its rotation of six months due to generations coming out. That's probably why it was reprinted.
