Thank you so much for putting this out there, bro. I played aux keys for most of my time at my church, at first feeling bad that I wasn't good enough. Granted , the lead keyboardist is superb, but over time I learned so much. One of the most important lessons is that without all the other sounds I produced, the music just wouldn't have that touch (because I played everything as close to what was on the record as possible). Later there were times I had to play lead keys and this was fun too, but I realised it never made me more superior to whoever played aux
Aux keys is one position in a band. The aux keys position is only diminished in church because most musicians don’t have experience in a pro setting! They watch TH-cam and other social media and try to copy musicians highlight reels into real musical situations!
Appreciate video content! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Possessing Piano Remedy (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a great exclusive product for learning how to play the piano easily without the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cooworker after many years got amazing success with it.
This is a really underrated channel. I hope you get the subs you deserve, but even if you don't, I hope you know that your fans really appreciate the quality of your work.
Yes, I play in a lot of church bands and it feels like the aux player is completing with main keys (or defaults to organ). Aux is so important to make the song shine. I wish more musicians would understand the importance of aux keys. Thanks for shedding some light on this.
AUX is where I started playing keys as a kid at my church. It allowed me to play with the pros without getting in the way until I was solid enough to play main keys. Good times and great lesson bro!!
Same here! I would set up/teardown the boards for services and weddings etc for the pro and as a payment I was allowed to play aux on the JX-3P. Back in tha day! Great video. I’m a few steps away from that set up!
japajp88 - I’m probably showing my age but my dad bought me a used Korg M1 that I used until I could upgrade to an XP80. They’re still some of my favorites sounds for aux keys.
Deyquan! Man, this is so good, thank you. Been working on my own technique plus looking for ways to model this for worship keys players. Appreciate your real-time, raw approach.
Man I really needed that!!!!! Aux keys could be tough sometimes cause you want to really show what u can do in front of huge crowds!!! Nice video man!!!!

My wife bought me a keyboard (Roland Juno DS) for Christmas. So I'm just 2 weeks in with learning how to play. My progression is a bit faster than others because I'm originally a sax player, so reading the music comes easy for me and knowing where the notes are on a piano isn't something I've had to learn in depth. Your videos are absolutely superb and very knowledgeable for beginners like me.
🙏🏾! I have a course coming soon about Aux Keys! It will go in depth even more! Go to www.deyquanbowens.com/subscribe and sign up to the mailing list to be notified!
Bro! Can’t emphasise this enough. Thank you so much for this. I truly appreciate the art of complementing one another as musicians. This is a difficult concept to teach, especially us young cats who just wanna outplay everyone in the band. 🇿🇦 ❤️
No problem man! It’s important to compliment each other because we are a team! If we all are adding something to the spot within our own space, that’s when the magic happens!
This was such a good topic that does not get talked about please do more videos on this topic 😊 and do you think that this is a good place for someone learning to start at?
Hey thanks cuz! Yes it’s a great place to start because it gets you comfortable playing in a performance. Aux generally doesn’t play every moment in the song so it’s a great way to learn placement!
Hey bro first off nice tutorial. Can you go more in depth on the role of the aux player and how not to over play and still leave room for the other musicians. Also more on the sounds to you use and what kind of sounds are best layered together when playing aux. Also for the accents part for the brass sound starting at 4:38 what tone was that. Thanks and hopefully you can have time to help. Bless up
"find lines that are signature and learn those"...what I tell up and coming players all the time. If you're bread & butter work is covers, nobody cares about your improv skills! Play the track! Great video as always.
I ran across this video ..searching up Why to play double keyboard vs single. This layout is like the Skeleton / Backbone of having uh nice 3 min song. And going into the drops, switches, record some crazy keys, while yall at it have fun.
I love how you play. I really love how the aux keys play so little but contributes so big in the music! If I may ask, what brand are using for aux keys? Thanks!
Yeah man I agree! It’s even more difficult when the other musicians don’t respect space! Sometimes songs especially gospel, don’t really have signature lines so most keys players end up making things up!
Deyquan Bowens that’s the main issue man I’m a lover of keyboards and sounds so I often do aux keys but it kills me sometimes how the main keyboard player will over play and stack like 5 sounds on top of each other...why you ask me to play smh 🤦🏿♂️
Yes sir, great helpful tidbits bruth, very useful for me myself I'm usually a solo player Split on the bass and chords, but playing behind another player, I have to also learn to play addlibs for someone else, it's a lul boring sometimes during verse and hook but, it get interesting in the vamps an run ons, you can get alul fun and creative, So your video right here definitely bent me to approach the aux playing differently, Thanks Man lol
Love the video thank you! Just wanted to ask I’m starting out to b play aux keys do you have any recommendations on keyboards to get or sounds or sound packs to use for MainStage? Thanks so much!
Deyquan Bowens That’s what it sounded like which is why I wondering what it was. Are there any brief tips you could share as to what sounds you were able to combine? If it’s too much to explain don’t worry about it. The way you mixed it all together sounds great Bro!👊🏾

Yeah most church bands think that main keys is the position to show off! Main keys , aux keys and organ are equal parts to a song.
AUX is where I started playing keys as a kid at my church. It allowed me to play with the pros without getting in the way until I was solid enough to play main keys. Good times and great lesson bro!!
Facts! That’s how I came up! It’s not a diminished role and if done right, will take the performance to new heights!!!!!!
Same here! I would set up/teardown the boards for services and weddings etc for the pro and as a payment I was allowed to play aux on the JX-3P. Back in tha day! Great video. I’m a few steps away from that set up!

demikoo 😂 lets put it this way...I was in my early 20s when that M1 came out! That’s awesome!
Love it. So important for both to not try and outplay but rather compliment each other
Yes I agree!
Deyquan! Man, this is so good, thank you. Been working on my own technique plus looking for ways to model this for worship keys players. Appreciate your real-time, raw approach.
I appreciate your comment!
SO HELPFUL! Needed esp so musicians don't overshadow themselves.
I’m coming out with a course that will go MORE in depth on this! I see it’s a well needed topic!
This is your best work so far.
Really?!?!?! Wow thanks! I’ll definitely try to put out more stuff like this! ✊🏾
honestly I'd love to see more stuff on aux keys coz I feel like it's the most neglected side... May you could do a longer course on it (?)🙏
Man I really needed that!!!!! Aux keys could be tough sometimes cause you want to really show what u can do in front of huge crowds!!! Nice video man!!!!
Nah I feel you bro! It’s hard to explain over text, I’ll definitely do more videos! You guys are really responding to this video lol!

Thanks! Hahaha yeah I have to start adding drums lol!

At my church aux keys was usually the way less experienced and often not invited to hang out after band practice lol.
This was such a good topic that does not get talked about please do more videos on this topic 😊 and do you think that this is a good place for someone learning to start at?

Great vid man a misunderstood art man aux keys can be real difficult to know what to do and play and patches can be difficult sometimes
Yeah man I agree! It’s even more difficult when the other musicians don’t respect space! Sometimes songs especially gospel, don’t really have signature lines so most keys players end up making things up!

What do you mean?
What sounds are you using on the Jupiter for this video
hey man could you tell me what sound that was on the aux keys
Hey Bro I also have the Jupiter 80 board. Is that brass sound a stock sound and if so could you share what it is?
I created it! I tried to mimic the J Pop Brass from the Fantom.
Deyquan Bowens That’s what it sounded like which is why I wondering what it was. Are there any brief tips you could share as to what sounds you were able to combine? If it’s too much to explain don’t worry about it. The way you mixed it all together sounds great Bro!👊🏾
Hey go to www.deyquanbowens.com and send me a email. It’s easier to communicate there and I’ll send you the sound to upload to your JP80!
Deyquan Bowens Just sent the email to you Bro👊🏾 Appreciate the lookout
Check your email!!
