I feel like something that not everyone still knows about is that the PS3 has funky architecture. Games that utilize that architecture run beautifully and look even better than anything on the Xbox 360, but since trying to optimize for that architecture is a hassle, they just run everything through the main dual core CPU, which means cross platform games run better on the Xbox's 3 core simple CPU. TLDR: the PS3 had an artificial bottleneck in the form of a hardware gimmick that benefited those who learned how to use it with extreme performance, but was a headache if you didn't bother with it.
NGL, it always astonishes me to think that Sonic Unleash was a generation too early for the hardware it was on. Played it on the Xbox series X and it still looks incredible and it can run locked 60fps

Actually the game runs at 880x720 so unless you go 480p or 576p You're still upscaling, but yes running at 720p does increase performance as does turning off WiFi, Sonic Unleashed runs with no Vsync and no frame rate cap on PS3 meaning unlike the Xbox 360 version it has lower input lag at the cost of screen tearing and bad frame pacing.
Wii version was 30fps stable and had no issues for me at all? Loved it. And the motion controls were fun also. 🤷 everyone loves to shit on the wii but doesn’t actually understand the consoles limitations. Nintendo as well as 3rd party companies treated it like it’s a literal GameCube with a motion controller. And there for spec for GameCube when designing games. The Wii literally was as powerful as a Xbox 360. There were only literally 3 games made for the wii that actually used all its available horsepower. Smash brawl. twilight princess and Skyward sword. Which were all Nintendo 1st party games.

Night Stages split so they're shorter, running at a better framerate, medal collecting ties to ranking instead of being hidden collectibles, and overall being a massive upgrade for completionist
06 taught them what not to do so they did the opposite and made a game with no deadline or limited resources and it resulted in bad reviews and people calling it the dark era of sonic, and if you noticed in recent years history repeated itself and after the failings of forces they tried to make a game the opposite of that in frontiers and people still complained but hey at least it got an overall more positive reception then unleashed which for years people put in their top 10 worst sonic game lists
And that's a serious crime against humanity in my book. I really wanted to play Unleashed on 360, but slowdown is unbearable. I'd love to see that game on PC, it looks amazing

It amazes me how this game manages to still be one of the best looking games in the series. Sonic Unleashed, the main-line game that came out after 06 and Secret Rings. Sonic Team made one of their best games after what most consider to be some of their worst and there's something amazing about that
This game is still one of, if not the best looking Sonic game I have ever played, and now that we have higher powered consoles like the Xbox one, and series X/S. I can only hope that the hedgehog engine will come back.
I personally play all my ps3 games locked at 720p. the overall system just plays every game better that way, and a lot of games on the system upscale to 1080p rather then native. the minor difference most of the time isn't worth the smoother gameplay. There was only a handful of games I felt like where worth playing at 1080p, and none where first party lol.

I found a glitch in origins sonic 3 where if you enable debug mode and hyper sonic then go to ice cap act 1 transform into hyper sonic then don't go down with the board keep doing this then something crazy happens
Thats because from my understanding at least backwards compatibility 360 games are being emulated and each one individually modified to have the fps unlocked as well as other minor tweaks by xbox employees, Generations was given the 60fps treatment one xbox one (S/X) but not unleashed which didn’t get that until being made compatible for the xbox series S/X (great naming convention xbox)
Xbox One S for me. I own a 360 tho. Sadly i have skill issue and i tried many times over many days to beat a night stage but just cannot do it and gave up... This game would be so much better with just day stages.

Ya kidding right the game can’t run internally at 1080p and all the 3D assets in the game are ridiculously high poly for a ps3/360 game especially one that has to load many objects on screen at once letalone the frequent loading and unloading when you blast through large areas in the span of a few seconds, and for comparison sonic generations only runs as well as it does on ps3/360 because all the 3D assets are significantly lower poly then the ones in unleashed, infact if you compare models like springs rings dashpads and sonic himself between unleashed and generations you can see the significant drop in tri count.

I got this game for my birthday, for the Wii*, I got up to the warehog portion and I turned the game off because it wasn't Sonic anymore. Hence I continue my proud legacy of the only Sonic games I ever finished was the Genesis trilogy and Mania.

@TheRadmin1724 on consoles built For the standards of 2006 unleashed is very overkill, we are talking larger textures, more objects loaded on screen at once and higher poly models then whats even used in any sonic game since, no kidding they had to scale back the tri count by alot when reusing assets in generations, and those poor consoles are constantly loading and unloading all those models in real time constantly Ao for hardware like that the difference between 720p and 1080p is much more significant then if it were software running on pc ps4 or xboxone, Not to mention the ps3 specifically was notorious for being difficult to optimize for 3rd parties
I looked it up and the 360 has a hardware scaler, while the PS3 does it in software, explaining the performance loss here. To be fair Generations had its share of framerate issues as well (I know this from the 360 version).
