When you are messing with the lighting on the sphere, just REALLYYYY crank it up so its really dramatic. Then you can add a tint to re-color the white/black. Let me know if this helps

Instead of masking to remove the excess ring, I accidentally pressed the 3d button with both the ring and the planet and it turned out good.
