I rarely, if ever, feature myself in the "Featured Video" section of my channel but in honor of my best buddy, Mr. Butter, who makes an appearance at the end of the video, I made an exception. Sadly, we had to put Mr. Butter to sleep last evening, 12/20/12.
Come for the bass. Stay for the Butter. (I was going to trim the video after the guitar solo, but one of our cats, Mr. Butter, makes a rare appearance at the very end so I left it in).
Uncharacteristically, I rolled the treble way down for this song.
For some reason this bass line has always eluded me even though I've played it in a few bands (though not correctly). Walking bass lines (even very repetitive ones like this) are a weakness of mine. That, and I could never quite pick out what notes were being played, due in part to the "murky" bass tone on the recording. And also, in part, because some of the notes I thought I was hearing didn't make sense. Not that I know much theory mind you, but there were a couple of elementary things that seemed "off".
So, with some free time on my hands, I set out to settle my score with this song once and for all. My ears, which I consider to be pretty good, still could not pick out some of the passing tones in question. In desperation, I resorted to the things you people refer to as "tabs". Well, I looked at three different "tabs" which showed me three completely different bass lines. How could anyone rely on these things?
Fortunately, I stumbled on a "bass and drums only" version on TH-cam and that did the trick. The tracks isolated came from the "Rockstar 2" video game.
I understand that they are re-re-re- releasing a re-mixed version this album for it's 40th anniversary. I'd think that any self-respecting Tull fan would be obligated to purchase it - you know who you are.
In all honesty, figuring it out was more difficult than playing it.
It is always like this
After a couple years messing around with acoustic guitar, I decided to pick the bass for the first time 5 months ago as some friends were willing to start a band. Being a fan of Geddy Lee for years I had seen several of your videos covering Rush songs, and now every time I want to learn a song I check if you covered it first. Your clean, precise playing is very helpful. Keep up the awesome work, you have the best bass TH-cam channel I've seen so far.
Cool. I hope you enjoy the bass as much as I have. Thanks a lot.
This bass line is so cool. Congrats for the job!
Eduardo Filho Thanks.
I play by ear so torture myself by relying on my memory for accuracy.
Thank you very much. We have six. I wouldn't describe Mr. Butter as "beautiful" but he was well loved and had a wonderful personality. He was a stray and in very, very poor condition when we took him in. He looked like a shipwrecked pirate. We treated him like a king for the nine years we had him, but he deserved longer.
Wow, there is a lot going on bass wise in this tune. Excellent cover! nice to see Mr. Butters come in to say hi.
I am learning so much from you. I watch all ur videos.I've been playing guitar for about 30 years but recently (07/11) took up bass in a Journey tribute band in my area out of boredom. I got the gig after one song mostly because I know the fretboard good, have a good ear and can sing even though I've never played bass a day in my life. Anyway, what I've learned is that I've been wrong about bass. It is as complex as you want it to be and very important. Thanks for the help. Tony, South Carolina.
What a clean job of covering this song! I learned a lot by watching you play. Not easy at all to learn by ear.
Love it how you couldn't resist the 'Hey' - 2:15
2:15 the bass going off on it's own little tangent is absolutely wonderful,. This song made me appreciate bass a lot more and taught me how important a component it is in music.
It is great, isn't it?
Very sorry for your loss of Mr. Butter. I'm in the same boat now my wife and I took in a stray that was very beaten and poorly treated and now he's beautiful and very loved, all the best to your family :). beautiful covers by the way, your just grand.
One helluva cover. I can say without equivocation you have done this song justice. :o)
Thanks a lot.
Fantastic!! lovely bassline. You play this amazingly well. So inspiring! !
Outstanding! Good choice
very nicely done!
Mr. Butter R.I.P.
I aways enjoy your covers, and hearing all of the finer points of these great bass parts. Makes one appreciate them (the bass players) even more. =)
Thanks for the very creative compliment.
Well thank you very much for the kind words. I'm glad that you enjoyed the videos. I try and pick songs that might be interesting from a bass player's perspective.
Yeah, it's pretty busy. Thanks.
We miss Mr. Butter very much. He was one of my all time favorite cats. Whenever someone comments on this video I have to skip to the end to see him and still get choked up every time.
Ahhhh ! You're a "Cat guy" as well. Remarkable little creatures ! Max, my 18 lb. Grey stripe best buddy is also a constant companion, with or without instruments in hand. We press on ! Excellent cover ( as usual ) ! ! !
I love your videos. They really show the amount of talented bass players,
in rock and roll.
Thanks for the great comment.
Thanks.
Oh! This classic stuff.....I think as you do, walking basses part are difficult to nail..but I then trust in my ears..too! I use to watch to four or five different tabs when trying to make use of them..and then..finally trust again in my ears to decide..You made me feel I´m not so "maniac" as i thought I was...!
Love this one, my son played this and "Cross Eyed" with a great band they had in HIgh School..unfotunately they had to separate, when beggining university studies..
They were good at 70´s covers!
Sounds great!
Hello. Nice job! I came here 'cuz my uncle wanted me to play in his band ( he's like 65 and I'm 25 but still band kicks ass...) And he wanted me to play this song as a cover. And since it's not very difficult to play, it's very hard to remember it !!! And of course, the most difficult is to write such masterpiece, but can only dream about that, right ?? Anyway, thanks for this video, really helpful. Regards, Tomas CZE
Foi o melhor Baixista cover da musica Aqualung por Jethro tull
que Avistei até agora ;)
I know I'm late to this party, but that was absolute perfection, thank you for this. RIP Mr. Butter.
Better late than never. Thanks! Butter was the best. Still think of him often.
One of the best versions that I ever heard. Very nice.
Perfect.
Excellent
That Rickenbacker sound is just plain awesome, and so is your playing! By far the best cover I have seen so far! I'm currently trying to learn this song, but the fast part you play so smoothly still escapes me ;)
Excellent! Quite amazing to be able to pick it up by ear and to remember😳!!!! So impressed!
Thanks a lot! It gets easier to do after a couple decades.
Heard this song on the radio today. I've played bass for years and underestimated how rocking of a bass line this song has. Love rickenbacker sound. Using a 5 string Schecter Elite and getting a nice warm groovy sound atm
one of the hardest bass lines to play and you nailed it
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
I admire your bass work so much, it's nice to see a guy like you playing bass to songs like these, because not many people in my school even care for this stuff. I just wish my bassist could catch on to things easier like you seem to be able to do xD anyway thanks for the post, it was a great cover :D
Awesome cover! I've always wanted to learn how to play the bass to this song and now from watching your video, I'll be able to pick it up. Keep the great work! And the special appearance of Mr. Butter was a fitting farewell.
You just look so chill playing this song.
I like the "Hey!" you got in there. That made the experience so authentic.
Love your Rush covers, and this too, and probably anything else you post. Great job. You have a real gift for hearing all those notes. I sold my 4003 model that I bought new in '83 some years ago (like a complete idiot) when I was short on cash, so both your bass and your Rush covers bring up all kinds of good nostalgia for me. I did manage to get a Geddy jazz to make up for it though, so I redeemed myself. : )
Sorry to hear about Mr Butters my condolences i know how it feels to lose a pet they are part of the family! Great cover it helped me pick out the line much like they way you used the rockstar thing, and yeah the 40th anniversary cd is awesome! thanks again
Thanks, I think about Mr. Butter often and always go to the end of the video to see him when responding to a comment. He was a really special cat with a lot of personality. I'm glad that you found the video helpful, thanks for letting me know.
Thanks. I hope the video helps. I'm pretty confident I got most of the notes right.
We miss Mr. Butter a great deal. He was a very special cat.
@WelshPhantom
Thanks. I took great care to get it as exact as possible which was tough because the changes are very subtle. It did take a bit of time. Ah, Mr. Butter. He doesn't see well, has no teeth and is generally a grump but he's a sweet boy. Sad to say he's not our largest.
Congratulations! I'm studying this song. Amazing!
When I was in high school there were always a few guys who would buy the chord books/sheet music and, often, they were way off as well. Any transcribed music is only as good as the person (and that person's ears) figuring it out.
The last tab I looked up was for Heavy Horses and, while it was posted as the "bass" tab, it was actually the harmony guitar part that plays along with the bass.
Great cover, I remembered the moments before the concerts here in Brazil the Rush Time Machine Tour. Beautiful music, congratulations for cover! Hug.
you're so good! :)
Great cover and sorry for your loss. Mr. Butter looks like he was a cool "bass cat".
Thanks. Yeah, we love all of our cats but, once and a while, a really special one comes along and Mr. Butter was one of those.
Nice version of the song. This song is a blast to play on the bass. Your rick sounds nice. Sorry to hear about you cat.
Man, again, it is really impressive. This one is a little bit more tricky! Wonderfully played, congratulations. Your french fan
I think we'll all agree Glenn Cornick was a great bass player
Thank you very much.
Ah, takes me back to when I was a student in the 70’s. I had a 4003 a few years ago, removed the pickup cover, added a Hipshot and a Treble Bezel. It sounded great and people would always comment on how good it looked, but I found it to be an ergonomic disaster. I persisted for a couple of years then got a Music Man Classic Sabre. Couldn’t be happier. Great cover and I love the masks!!!
Troy, nice new shirt dude! And awesome playing on this. I wish I could play as smooth as you when needed!! Nice job. Your cat is, um......large!
Well done sir from another Tull fan. Saw Tull on the 'Thick as a Brick' tour way back when. Mr. Butter is aptly named because he looks like...well a big ball of butter.
Great cover. You are a huge inspiration to me as a bass player. Thank you.
Thank you very much for the kind words.
Glad I could help. Thanks.
YOU ROCK MAN!! Congratulations on your posture and perfection in execution, your video is really a lesson! This RIC is beautiful and this incredible collection of masks is pretty cool! Why don't you use some of them in your videos? It could be really fun! Congratulations for the excellent work! God bless you.
WOW I just started to get back into Jethro Tull a few days ago, what a coincidence :D Great cover, love the solo!!
It was a great help as it gives me a little reinforcement I made a good choice with Ampeg!I Actually I bought small 100 watt Ampeg stack 2 x 10 (for home use) so I must be on the right track with my bass guitar journey. Thanks for responding as I would imagine you are swamped!
As sad as it was to lose Mr. Butter, we also saw it as an opportunity to help another needy cat, which we did. He's no Butter but...I'm sure he'll come around.
Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment.
Great cover!
Aqualung is my favorite from Jethro Tull-
Keep up the good work-
ok, liked your video, is a complex bass line in, FANTASTIC YOUR TECHNIQUE
Thanks.
such a beautiful instrument I will own one someday!!!great job
Thanks for posting. This song is a modal nightmare.
awesome
Rest in peace Mr. Butter. He was beautiful.
Thanks.
Keep at it and you'll get it.
Nice playing
Stephen Davidson Thanks.
One of my all time favs!
I hope you liked it.
Man I love this song. My favorite part was the "Hey!". Well done ! :D
Both Hammond and Tull's previous bassist, Cornick put down some groovy basslines.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot. Mr. Butter was the finest cat ever.
Excellent! I've been wanting to learn this one for a while. You chose the right tone for this song. I have always enjoyed melodic bass lines and this is a perfect example. As for the 1 Dislike - it must be from the homeless man displayed on the cover. ; )
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks.
You're right, it was not easy to learn by ear.
Sweet mask collection!, I see old Death studios classics and Don Post
As usual, a great one! Living in the past would be a good one :)
Hey Troy, great cover! I know exctly what you mean about learning this bass line. I struggled with this for ages myself. Tabs are always a dicey situation at best and I only refer to them if I'm stuck on something. Even if you find one that's somewhat correct, you still have to undo all the bad technique. It seems like most people who tabulate bass lines think either a) you should play as many open notes as possible or b) you should make unecessary excursions up and down the neck to look cool.
Glad to see you talking about "notes strange to the year in the walking bassline" It happens to me ,too and I think you are not mistaken..Lot of times ,pasing notes are not so armonious to the theory...Jazz players often use them, and I`ve been readin about because of my doubts..So,be easy! Thanks for remembering me of this songMy son played it on bass a year ago with his frinds band..And he did "invent" 13ths..to replace the keyboards in that Jetro version.!! This kids of today"ashame "me!=)
Awesome cover. What a bass line.
I've enjoyed your bass videos. And i'm a drummer! Well done!
You are Fabulous! I just got my first bass guitar! I love it! You love the same music I love! THANK YOU!
Thanks so much. So cool! I hope you derive as much satisfaction from playing as I have/do.
@tinman3012
Thanks Ron. I've never had the pleasure of seeing Tull - it's a shame about his voice these days. Mr. Butter is a sweet old grumpy cat.
Funny you should mention the 40th anniversary edition of Aqualung - I purchased it around the time you made this video. It is, in fact, remixed and sounds far better than the version that had been available for four decades previously.
And the album just celebrated its 50th last week!
2:16 made my life, great job
The masks in the background make this video so much better.
Best cover ive seen
Thanks.
Obrigado.
I thought I was going to have nightmares dive to the masks, but mr. Butter made it all better...or should I say..butter....
Thanks. I rounded out the sound a bit for this video.
Geez, thanks a lot.
Thanks for the kind words.
In answer to your question, Jethro Tull is pretty darn cool.
We were robbed of the opportunity of hearing Glenn Cornick wailing this out on record. A shame, really...
Adrian Lackey Was he kicked out of the band or something?
TJH3113 Yes. Not for anything he did, but Ian Anderson fired him in favour of hiring a boyhood friend to take his place. Cornick wasn't even properly thanked for his services.
Adrian Lackey I did not know that. That's too bad.
That is a shame. As a founding member of the group who did his job and did it well, there should have been a better exit.
+mazdaplz Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond
Awesome playing there Dr. Doolittle. Loved every Tull song I've ever heard, without ever really exploring them. Could you recommend an album? Thanks, and well done again!
Tull had some great bass players. John Glascock was my favorite. Thanks.
Belle collection de masques , j'adore .
Thank you. DeathStudios.
Rest in peace Mr. Butter :(
Yes, he was the best cat ever and was loved by all who met him.
Had to laugh at your comment about tabs in the description. I feel the same way!
Thanks. I have nothing against tabs, I've just never used them, and the few I've seen were really inaccurate. I wish you great success on your version of Aqualung.
@FearOfTheDark987
Thanks. I kind of pick and choose my Tull on a song by song basis. The only album I actually own is "Songs From The Wood" which I like a lot.
Oh man I assumed Mr. Butter was going to be a dog. RIP kitty :(
Yeah, he was the best cat ever.
