the greatest of threats to the great church. Scary to think how many souls were lost because of the "other gospels" we also find out that gnostics were big in arabia and one of Mohamud's teachers was a gnostic "Christian". Reason Islam has so much references to the gnostic gospels(Christ Being the spirit of God , Him talking in the crib as a baby, creating birds from clay, miracles as a child, Putting simon in his place at the cross as his spirit returns to heaven, Saying how peter, james and john were corrupted by paul and that the other apostles knew the true faith, The long blonde hair, Priests and men should have many wives, women must only have one husband, the hebrew bible should be ignored as corrupted. That The jews wanted to kill Christ because he told them there scripture and traditions were wrong)
You make a great point. In the podcast in general, I've chosen not to make connections between the heresies on the fringes of Christianity and Islam - not because they aren't there - but because Islam is a different religion altogether, and so is in a different category and can't be reduced to something merely caused or influenced by heresy, but also because I'm not an expert in Islam, and I don't want to get too far astray from my own area of expertise. But thanks for that insight!
Wow, I didn't know they said Peter, James and John in particular were corrupted. That strikes me as especially diabolical because obviously those three were especially favored with revelations by Christ.
@@CatholicCulturePod Right, but of course our source for the truth that Peter, James, and John were Jesus' inner circle is the four canonical gospels, and so the point is that the gnostic gospels were making the implicit claim that those gospels were not trustworthy! It's subtle, and of course not obvious in all the gnostic writings, but the whole project was meant to undermine the authority of the bishops in succession from the apostles. The trend you sometimes find among some scholars is to present the gnostics as just a variation of Christianity and that there were many "Christianities" - and this is ironic because they end up treating the gnostic gospels as reliable but the canonical gospels as unreliable!
@@CatholicCulturePodthe strange thing is the Quran doesn’t mention them by name. But it says the gospel was corrupted by evil men. Over time Islamic scribes continued the gnostic ideas that Peter, James, John and Paul were the evil men that corrupted the gospel.
