Celeste is my favorite game and I've been playing it ever since it came out, yet I've always been an outsider of the community, my first time ever trying to include myself in the community was through your streams, you were doing Grandmaster heartside golden attempts at the time. I enjoyed these a lot but still felt like an outcast due to not understanding many celeste terms, inside jokes in the community and popular modded levels with references and what not. Why that cat nodding is so popular or why this specific map is the hardest one in the game. Videos like these make me want to try again and maybe one day feel like I belong with other people who share the same passion for this beautiful game :) , Thanks for the guide

Awesome video! Great idea for people coming into the community and being overwhelmed by the lingo. Side note: I was wondering, since Farewell and 7Bg are used as benchmarks from the base game to compare with hard modded goldens, would it be relevant to have 100% deathless and 202 deathless on the list as well? Especially because how they compare is a question that crosses most people's mind when they see incredible deathless achievements.
the issue with trying to compare to 100% deathless and such is that its Really hard to use as a benchmark, since its a way different type of difficulty than most goldens, all the difficulty being from it being such a long challenge, people already run into issues comparing shorter hard goldens to farewell but with 100% deathless that would be an even bigger issue, its just so far apart in the type of difficulty that a 1 minute really hard gameplay golden and a 2 hour simple gameplay deathless run are thats its just too hard to compare
I’m pretty sure hard list are the hardest maps in Celeste modded (with some quality standard to not just get 50 1frqme in a row). Stars are a difficulty rating. The cutoff for hard list is DMR (dark moon ruin), and the maps are described as GM+1, meaning harder than (most) of the hardest maps in current collabs mods

When you got to how difficult each tier was, I expected you would you go over all the chapters. I never expected that tier 7 is everything above chapter 7b. What the heck. No wonder most of the maps have like 1-2 completions.

You mentioned a website for the golden list, do you know/think this would be similar to Geometry Dash's Demon Progression site where maybe there's a list that is local to each user that they can check of what they've done without needing to get it verified, and then if you verify your run you get shouted out/put on a global leaderboards like the current spreadsheet?
There's the Celeste Skill Rating spreadsheet, which is meant to be a way to search for custom maps of varying difficulties, from easy to extremely hard, and you can submit clears to be added in there, although it's a public spreadsheet so it's a bit different from what you're looking for. We're not planning on having a global leaderboard though. Those spreadsheets are built more for fun, and just as an alternate way to find new mods. We feel like leaderboards could potentially pressure some players into having to keep up with their completions, and some players can get easily attached to the ranks going up, what could possibly put them in a toxic completionist/competitive mindset.

duration is the most important aspect when it comes to deathless runs, since adding length to a run will make it exponentially harder to do deathless since you have to do that on top of everything else, hence why farewell golden is on the same level as difficulty as some grandmaster difficulty map goldens just because its so long, waterbear has a very scary combination of both extreme length and consistently very high difficulty throughout
Where would Rickfernello's perfect celeste run rank? If farewell golden is high 4/low 3, where would you rank farewell golden with the moon berry, demo dash skip, secrets, etc?
thats hard to say since its very hard to compare the average goldens to ricks run because of it being a very different type of difficulty from being so much longer than anything else but still having quite easy gameplay all throughout, though still its generally considered to be around the lower end tier 0 most likely but its hard to say accurately since its a very different skillset about farewell, adding moon berry adds very little to the overall difficulty so it would rank the same, adding onto secret rooms is very arbitrary so it becomes hard to say but it still wouldnt exceed tier 3, it might go up to like mid tier 3 with enough secrets but its a weird thing to try and judge aswell
Is farewell b-side on the list? It's a custom map but it is farewell. also 5b golden is tier -x because you can't do pausedrop edit: damn farewell b-side is tier 1

Like, I'd have to assume that Ivory would be harder to Silver than 7B since even though 7B is much longer, Ivory is input hell. I recall also hearing that the main reason forfcg is t1 is because of berry 6 being ridiculous (that room's designed around the respawn point setting up the ultra, a few other rooms also do that, but those rooms don't require multiple 1fs, so). I guess same question for other factors. Like, how relevant is tech to a golden's difficulty? Do puzzles particularly matter? Are maps with multiple ways to get through screens typically different difficulty than maps with only one solution? I guess also, in your experience, what types of maps tend to be the most and least fun to golden?
@@snolls105 when it comes to golden difficulty length is definitely the most important factor, adding length to a deathless challenge makes it exponentially harder, ivory silver is indeed still harder than 7b because of how big the difference in gameplay difficulty is, but comparing it to like farewell which is still significantly much easier than ivory that golden is considered much harder because how much longer it is, adding length to a map isnt really adding difficulty its more like multiplying difficulty because you have to do that on top of all the previous rooms, there is a reason why the vast majority of tier 1 goldens are 20+ minutes. Tech is a difficult subject that causes a lot of discussion about golden placement, cause for more experienced players tech heavy maps sometimes wont feel that hard at all because they are used to it meanwhile for newer players it would be much harder, generally people try to take this into account but since so many golden players are more experienced players this is often a difficult element to consider, puzzles generally dont matter since for goldens its mostly just about the execution and you could just look up the solution if you wanted to, maps that have multiple routes generally arent that different from linear maps, since people will take the time to route the optimal safest route and most the people after that will kinda just copy that making the map often still end up kinda linear for deathless since everyone will just take the safest route. As for the last question this one is very subjective but i personally enjoy longer goldens, im not the best at very short high difficulty dense goldens, i tend to mindblock on those maps pretty quickly and they get annoying faster, ofcourse this isnt always true and i still enjoy some of them, but often my favorites are longer less tech heavy maps and more kind of precision based maps like monikas d sides, often though the deciding factor for how fun a golden is will be the difficulty balancing, is the start the hardest part? is the middle the hardest part? the ending maybe? things like that in combination with the gameplay of the map itself can have a strong impact on how fun a golden is
the hardest golden i have done myself is the one that i have used as background footage in this video, its called Everlasting Farewell and its one of the hardest maps in high tier 1, im still really proud of my entire experience with that and it stays one of my favorite maps of all time
I dont know if this is worthy of a video or not...but a personal one for me would be: how could I start off interacting with the celeste modded community as a whole? Question can be a bit vague but the gist of it is pretty much...seeing a lot of players which accomplishments towers over mine (like people beating 1D7D while I just beat starfruit supernova) and think that i wouldnt be "worthy" of interacting with the community due to lack of skill or accomplishments... Im aware that this mentalitiy is generaly false and the community can and is very welcoming...though I could feel id be left behind since i wouldnt have anything to show as a skill indicator for myself Good luck on platinum everlasting farewell!

I do not believe that it is statistically possible to get every golden strawberry without using assist mode, or cheating in some way. I kinda think that Maddy Thorson was trolling us by putting these strawberries in the game, and having no way to tell if someone is using assist mode just by looking at the screen footage. I think they know full well that it's impossible, and the whole thing is little more than a social experiment to see how many people will cheat and then try to pass their work off as legitimate. There is no achievement or reward for getting these strawberries. You don't unlock a special ending where Theo chips a tooth on the gold strawberries in your pie. You do get a stamp of a gold strawberry on your save file if you succeed in getting all 25 gold strawberries. But PC players have already learned to hack their save slot to manipulate these stamps - including removing the assist stamp. anyway great video!
It's a list of the hardest maps that exist for the game (not golden difficulty, just to beat the level). The threshold for getting on the list is (somewhat arbitrarily I think?) placed at the map Darkmoon Ruins and anything harder than it.

tier x would simply stretch infinitely, at that stage there is no point in dividing difficulty anymore and that difficulty range alone is so wide that it probably wouldnt even ever be necessary either

Like, I'd have to assume that Ivory would be harder to Silver than 7B since even though 7B is much longer, Ivory is input hell. I recall also hearing that the main reason forfcg is t1 is because of berry 6 being ridiculous (that room's designed around the respawn point setting up the ultra, a few other rooms also do that, but those rooms don't require multiple 1fs, so). I guess same question for other factors. Like, how relevant is tech to a golden's difficulty? Do puzzles particularly matter? Are maps with multiple ways to get through screens typically different difficulty than maps with only one solution? I guess also, in your experience, what types of maps tend to be the most and least fun to golden?
@@snolls105 when it comes to golden difficulty length is definitely the most important factor, adding length to a deathless challenge makes it exponentially harder, ivory silver is indeed still harder than 7b because of how big the difference in gameplay difficulty is, but comparing it to like farewell which is still significantly much easier than ivory that golden is considered much harder because how much longer it is, adding length to a map isnt really adding difficulty its more like multiplying difficulty because you have to do that on top of all the previous rooms, there is a reason why the vast majority of tier 1 goldens are 20+ minutes. Tech is a difficult subject that causes a lot of discussion about golden placement, cause for more experienced players tech heavy maps sometimes wont feel that hard at all because they are used to it meanwhile for newer players it would be much harder, generally people try to take this into account but since so many golden players are more experienced players this is often a difficult element to consider, puzzles generally dont matter since for goldens its mostly just about the execution and you could just look up the solution if you wanted to, maps that have multiple routes generally arent that different from linear maps, since people will take the time to route the optimal safest route and most the people after that will kinda just copy that making the map often still end up kinda linear for deathless since everyone will just take the safest route. As for the last question this one is very subjective but i personally enjoy longer goldens, im not the best at very short high difficulty dense goldens, i tend to mindblock on those maps pretty quickly and they get annoying faster, ofcourse this isnt always true and i still enjoy some of them, but often my favorites are longer less tech heavy maps and more kind of precision based maps like monikas d sides, often though the deciding factor for how fun a golden is will be the difficulty balancing, is the start the hardest part? is the middle the hardest part? the ending maybe? things like that in combination with the gameplay of the map itself can have a strong impact on how fun a golden is

the hardest golden i have done myself is the one that i have used as background footage in this video, its called Everlasting Farewell and its one of the hardest maps in high tier 1, im still really proud of my entire experience with that and it stays one of my favorite maps of all time
And she’s currently practicing for a golden called final goodbye platinum berry (or 9dp for short) that will probably be the first ever tier x

I dont know if this is worthy of a video or not...but a personal one for me would be: how could I start off interacting with the celeste modded community as a whole?
Question can be a bit vague but the gist of it is pretty much...seeing a lot of players which accomplishments towers over mine (like people beating 1D7D while I just beat starfruit supernova) and think that i wouldnt be "worthy" of interacting with the community due to lack of skill or accomplishments...
Im aware that this mentalitiy is generaly false and the community can and is very welcoming...though I could feel id be left behind since i wouldnt have anything to show as a skill indicator for myself

I do not believe that it is statistically possible to get every golden strawberry without using assist mode, or cheating in some way. I kinda think that Maddy Thorson was trolling us by putting these strawberries in the game, and having no way to tell if someone is using assist mode just by looking at the screen footage. I think they know full well that it's impossible, and the whole thing is little more than a social experiment to see how many people will cheat and then try to pass their work off as legitimate. There is no achievement or reward for getting these strawberries. You don't unlock a special ending where Theo chips a tooth on the gold strawberries in your pie. You do get a stamp of a gold strawberry on your save file if you succeed in getting all 25 gold strawberries. But PC players have already learned to hack their save slot to manipulate these stamps - including removing the assist stamp.

Whats the hard list? You often mention it, i assume it is similar to this but not sure what it is.
It's a list of the hardest maps that exist for the game (not golden difficulty, just to beat the level). The threshold for getting on the list is (somewhat arbitrarily I think?) placed at the map Darkmoon Ruins and anything harder than it.

tier x would simply stretch infinitely, at that stage there is no point in dividing difficulty anymore and that difficulty range alone is so wide that it probably wouldnt even ever be necessary either
