    It was cool that you brought up the hexa chain and i enjoyed your humble follow up at the end. I do sharpen many a chain for my customers. The square grind profile is the nicest by far. It appears that Sthil rides the coats tails of other manufacturers. Their rapid speed profile was to compete with the square profile, but the profile can't be maintained, can only be sharpened to traditional round ground or changed to a square grind. The hexa is just another attempt to compete with something that has always been awesome. The original square grind is very versatile and compliant to any position of the chain to direction of wood grain. They come standard with a 20 degree top plate angle, yet, during the first sharpening, I change it to15 degrees. Sometimes 10 degrees. Both angles still cut exceptionally well in bucking postion, but having to ripcut at times, those angles step up the game. Even cross grain ( big nots ) doesnt slow down the performance. With hexa chain, this would be my concern, ( can the profile be maintained, or is it a one shot deal like the rapid speed, and why would someone pay up to 3 times as much for a Sthil chain, than an Oregon square grind that has been proven relible in performance for years???)

Your videos help me get better at it, and I want to be awesome at it! I would consider it for a career change. If it wasn't for your 8 ways to fall a tree video, I may not be here today because I was just winging it, trial and error tree falling and it was not going good. Interesting raker design. Wonder if that would help with the problem I've had for years with a normal full chisel chain. I cut mostly Red Oak and after a bit the tips of the chisel wear off. Happens pretty quick on a 30" or larger dry red oak. I had chunked up 2 fairly large red oak trees just the other day and had to swap out a chain about 3/4 of the way through. I can cut a slightly softer wood like Silver Maple or Ash all day long and just touch up the chain with a file every few hours. I square grind my chains by the way.

  • @aus71383
    @aus71383 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the grabbiness is from the side plate/cutter angle. "Stihl fan suisse" and Vallorbe have some great videos on square chain geometry and ideal angles, as well as the mechanics of the chain in action. The side cutter severs the fibers, the top cutter/plate peels the shaving out. The more aggressive side plate angle may need a taller raker/depth gauge to get a similar cutting performance. Conversely, square ground chains with relatively vertical side plates, rather than the "ideal" 80 degrees, may tolerate a lower raker since the side plate isn't digging in, it's more shearing and less slicing.

    • @aus71383
      @aus71383 ปีที่แล้ว

      26:56 your side plate angle is almost 90 degrees on the square ground
      27:07 side plate on the hexa is probably 60 degrees - very steep

  • @ecstans07
    @ecstans07 ปีที่แล้ว

    The side of the tooth on a square chain is a much better cutting shape than round chain. That’s why it cuts new kerfs so much easier. The hexagon is still more like a round chain in this regard, so not surprised at your results. Plus that angled raker is probably going to make it way harder to cut off course, kind of like trying to bore cut with a safety chain.

In my opinion the main culprit would probably be the metering diagram. after a few years of contact with fuel they get hard and do a bad job at delivering fuel to the engine etc. another culprit is possibly some dirt in the carb especially in the internal screen of the carb

    I need a plumb bob. Standing on a 45 degree grade I cut to deep into the face, my big saw is fast. It was leaning where I wanted the Myrtle Wood to go but the top curled around the other way downhill, Myrtle does that. Got my saw stuck, had to put a strain on it just to retrieve the saw, this wood is super heavy with oil, makes good firewood when dry. Another Mert was leaning into the creek, say 2 1/2 ' dia., again I missed judged the tops. Studied this project for a week, turns out I was on the wrong side of the come along blocking my safe exit when I pulled it down. Slipped on gravel and the tops came down on my back, bruising my ego more than anything else. My point is even with thinking it thru carefully I made only one mistake, being on the wrong side. Contractor helping remove limbs didn't notice I was there and dropped a limb on my back before I cut the tree down. In the trees if you are not safe you are dead meat. I'll save a big Mert for you Jacob, stop by anytime. Gold Beach Oregon.

    I would have a look at the spark plug if it gets hard to start and decreased power.
