    This is a good review. The concept of the movie was great. We all have our pain, and it is a part of us. We need our pain. Imagine all the pain Kirk has went through. The Kodos massacre, losing Edith Keeler, Rayna, his own son David Marcus. A lot of pain for one lifetime. Now if we got to explore some of that, having Kirk go through some kind of catharsis in dealing with his pain. This would have been a much better movie!

    How exactly does Rhett give Scarlett a sense of security? He is a con man, who leaves Scarlett on multiple occasions in her most vulnerable moments. He has some serious sado-masochistic tendencies, loving her the most, when she s actively rejecting him and leaving her to her own devices when she is in dire need of him. This marriage was actually his idea and in every tragedy Scarlett had he was somehow involved (her second husband, their child etc.) If not the charismatic Clark Gable, this character would be considered the most cruel romantic lead in cinema history..

    Star Trek V is not a bad movie by mistake; it's a bad movie by design. It is a farce. The farce is a supercilious parody. There are rare instances, like the first two Robocop films that are actually funny. Most are like STV in that they are merely insulting to the audience. This is why both Star Trek and Star Wars fans want to turn JJ Abrams into a human pinata.

    • @BigShotCritic

      Parodying what? This is the first I've heard of this view of Star Trek V.

    • @ThatsMrPencilneck2U
      @ThatsMrPencilneck2U 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BigShotCritic It's the lowest form, a self-parody. Since James Duhan and Nichelle Nichols got chubby as they got older, William Shatner had to show them gorging on potato chips. I don't want to remember this film to pull out more jokes, but it's easy to parody anything that takes itself as seriously as Star Trek. This was about the same time Shatner did his SNL skit lambasting trekkies as nerds. It all just feels mean spirited. That was right before they started getting their degrees and were suddenly cool, eligible bachelors. Now, Trekkies all are sexist, racist, homophobic Trump supporters.

    A good balanced take, and probably the best defence of Star Trek V which can be made. Absolutely agree that the interplay between Kirk, Spock & McCoy is up there with the best of Trek, with the camping scene at the apex. If giving the characters time & space to simply bounce off each other was Shatner's decision then he definitely deserves credit for it

    Fan of 70% of this film! Benicio should have been kept for any sequel after this one. Underrated actor... Seconded re the Rose city visit. Even that subplot had a strange edit during their escape. The chain of command aubplot was a good idea, but not perfect. Luke... not sure what would be more cliche. Turning a hero in the wrong direction, or using every sappy expectation. Luke was still fallible so why not show thebold Icarus rffect by having him get too high and then, oops, be an influence on student Rylo? (If i remember the mlvie correctly!) The force psych call and telekinesis seemed a bit much, though. Definitely kudos for the actors, who kept it all going more than it otherwise might have!

    Really nice review, with MANY great points, perfectly told! ❤ The script was a mess and less than the sum of its parts, but Shatner captured the feel of 60s TOS. Audiences were too used to the style of TWOK-TVH. The ship was newly-christened (as another ship but renamed "Enterprise" so that I could buy into, until the comedy became ostentatious. The Klingon subplot did feel tacked on and underdeveloped as Klaa's anger at Kirk never got sufficiently explored. The search for God... there's no way to resolve that, but the attempt via Kirk saying it's in each of our hearts was surprisingly fresh. Loved the fact that they used shuttlecraft and konking out the transporter. I still wonder why there are great barriers at the edge and at the middle of the galaxy. How many more out there 🙃. Didn't Shatner direct TJ Hooker before STV? Yeah, Shatner went big but rightly so as it was for the big screen.

    • @BigShotCritic
      @BigShotCritic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, he had directed several episodes of television but this was his film debut. I was going to talk about the transporter/shuttlecraft thing in earlier drafts. That's the one story point that was useful from the Enterprise being in disrepair, but the transporter could be disabled for any number of reasons - it's Star Trek! You could make up an entirely new reason, like the "ion particles in the atmosphere" or whatever. The tension in that shuttlecraft scene was an excellent moment that I didn't really have time to cover in this video. It was also the only good part of the Klingon subplot, but again, it could have been achieved with any other enemy, like a Romulan rescue ship or something.

    I really liked this even handed take on V. Because while it is a bad movie, the concept is great and was perfect for something that ponders big things like Star Trek (as opposed to the more swashbuckling concepts behind Lucas Star Wars). What impact would interstellar travel have on faith? Weaken it or reinforce it? And if man travels into space, you don’t think finding God is going to be on the list for some travelers? And while the story in concept is sort of a cheat because you can’t have the characters knowingly find God, if at the end they find out something important about themselves and relationship with each other, you can still have a satisfying movie. But there were so many script problems that wouldn’t have been hard to fix if you put an early cut in front of a discerning Trek or sci if audience (how long would it take to just say “God” told Sybok how to break all of those physical laws surrounding the impossibility of reaching the center of the galaxy? And get rid of some of the stupid jokes although the studio demanded more humor), you wonder why not take this very simple step? But for me what really dooms V is the effects are SO bad they take you right out of the movie every single time you see them. Good effects can’t save a bad movie, but when bad effects routinely kill any momentum the story begins you build, there’s no saving it. Again thank you for this even handed take.

    • @BigShotCritic
      @BigShotCritic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not aware if test screenings were as common back then as they are now, but I haven’t looked into it. I know they happened routinely as early as the early 90’s. Did they happen in the 80’s as well? Thank you for watching! There’s so much to love about this movie even though it’s bad overall.

    • @JRFETT
      @JRFETT 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think they had previews, but pre internet they weren’t as leaked, reported on and obsessed about long before a movie opens like in today’s culture. I guess it’s like a lot of bad movies (the original Spider-Man 3 is another movie I feel could have been fixed by listening to a few good fans before release) they just pick up some much inertia in the process of being made their path can’t be altered. In reference to The God Thing, Gene was typically disingenuous telling Bill the studio didn’t like the idea. The studio didn’t like GENE’s idea (although it admittedly was very bold for the 70’s), which apparently was littered with his sexual fantasies. Pocket Books tried more than once to publish The God Thing as a book (and even promoted it with a cover as upcoming), but multiple swipes by people such as Walter Koenig and Michael Jan Friedman couldn’t make it work. Friedman, who wrote several Star Trek books and comics said that there simply wasn’t enough of a story to tell from the notes Roddenberry left behind and what was there didn’t reflect favorably on him. He was told when there wasn’t enough to work with he was told make the scenes that did work longer…..too bad because like Planet of the Titans it would be great if we could read the original scripts.

    Thank you for this review and honoring this fantastic production. I completely agree with you about virtuous protagonists making a better story. You have really good taste in movies - I've never been into James Bond but I'll have to give Casino Royale a try. We watched the Fugitive because of you and enjoyed it. Almost all of the Jane Austen mid 90's adaptations were very good and set the standard. Earlier versions strayed from the story too much or were too stiff and more recent adaptations completely miss the spirit of Jane Austen. I have a fondness for any story where the upper class tries to live up to their privilege. I remember speaking with a wealthy friend who went to a public school in a very high end area and I asked her if there were a lot of mean girls. She said that no, the popular girls at her school during her time were gracious and giving which set the tone for the entire school. She remembered them fondly. By the way, have you seen Whit Stillman's Metropolitan? I have a feeling you would appreciate it. A perfect movie for Christmas break. Godspeed friend!

      Thank you for that! I’m really glad you enjoy the channel. Wow, I haven’t even heard of Metropolitan. I will make an effort to watch that one. You could also check out my video on Casino Royale if you haven’t already. But I recommend going in as blind as you can.

    Thank you for bringing to light this wonderful series!! I taped it off AMC back in the day and made my 3 daughters at least give it a try. Ages 10 to 15 and they were mesmerized. It never gets old, except the opening credits, but minor issue.

      It's so good and it shows no signs of aging badly whatsoever

      Is this the Trevor Evans I know personally?? Yeah, man! 7 and 10 are my least favorite, but 6, 8-9, and the spin off are all fun!

    I enjoy your reviews because they help me appreciate how much more thought and subtext go into these movies than I realize at first watch. Keep it up!

      Wherever there is John Logan you can bet there is miles of subtext. Might be pretentious nonsense, might be very slick and meaningful, but it’ll be there

    Thanks for the review! Just so you know, you are one of the few movie review youtubers that I have subscribed to. You actually make me want to watch movies to try to understand the meanings behind scenes and how they are constructed. I still think about your Godzilla video from a few years back, surprisingly enough. Your video is the main reason I want to watch it! Thanks for all you are doing here!

      You are so welcome! Movies are a lot of fun for a lot of different reasons and I just really enjoy looking at all that stuff. Thanks for watching!

    You missed the point of the movie. Look closer and you’ll notice that in Scarlett’s efforts to survive in her cruel circumstances, she becomes a worse and worse person at every turn. She starts out as a petulant, spoiled child, not unusual for girls her age, but with every strife she experiences she chooses to become more self-centered and evil. We watch her over and over again at the very cusp of becoming a better person, but instead she chooses to be worse. Melanie is the true picture of strength because she chooses to become kinder and more selfless despite her cruel circumstances. The theme of the movie isn’t just the vague notion of Change. The theme is “suffering is inevitable and it will change you. You are the one who decides whether that strife will turn you into a better or worse person”

    Good movie with racist views from a racist generation who now all have answered to God.

    This Japanese director was also a fan of Shakespeare which manifested itself into his films: The Bad Sleep Well (Hamlet), Ran (King Lear) and Throne of Blood (Macbeth).

    The new movies lack the real footage used in the older ones and the real grit is missing in the CGI versions. Also actors who lived it were much more real.

    I have heard of that, The 1860s were the darkest decade of the 19th Century. Golden Age of Tragic Rail Train Crashes. More Railways & Railroads ment more deaths! There was also the golden age of Scarlet Fevers. American Civil War 1861-1865.

    I watched this immediately after having read the book, and I have to say I wasn’t the biggest fan. I felt like it took a lot of Scarlett’s accomplishments away from her and threw it at Ashley. Specifically in building her business, it splits it between the two of them when originally it was ALL Scarlett. The movie really gutted my favorite parts of her.
