U did lars was a beast back in the 80's and early 90's. Not to mention he was an integral part of writing the music and was the reason they got famous. There would be no metallica without lars. All kirk did was play, sucky, at that.

James is far better. Better riff and song writer and has a natural ear for melody. Even his interludes and solos are beautiful. Kirk has had his superb moments but nowadays is just sloppy
Improvisation does not mean sloppy because it is intentional. Musicians have the right to improvise live. But as a fan I do like to hear the studio version live. It depends on the fan.
Kirk might be the better player ALL round, but you cannot call Kirk the best rhythm player of the two. Papa Het's right hand is unmatched! His rhythm playing is so damn monstrous!
