In my dark and whispering room
    Memories still brings
    Numbness to my feelings
Take my hand and brush my brow.
    Excellent song,
    One of my favorites
I wish Ritchie and Rod would put things aside and some how play this awesome song once again.

Thank you again for doing my request. I tried to select some songs that are less popular among the fans of the bands so that it would hopefully be a fresh one for Wilss too and I kinda felt you'd both like this one. I'm glad it worked well. By the way, at the exact part Jackie made that "he sounds like Elvis" comment, I always feel the same. Especially the "even though you'd soon be gone" line, I guess the way he sings/pronounces "soon be gone" is pretty similar to a line Elvis sings within a popular-ish song but I couldn't figure out that song yet.

The singer in this song is ROD EVANS, the first vocalist of the band. He lasted only a year, but the band record 3 albums with this first line-up, known as Deep Purple Mark I. Then in 1969, they changed the singer and the bass player (Ian Gillan and Roger Glover came in) and this was Mark II and lasted until 1973, when again changed the singer and bass player (David Coiverdale and Glenn Hughes were the new ones) to be the Mark III. The nucleus of the band was Jon Lord on keyboards, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar and Ian Paice on drums.

I think it is the best piece of music deep purple ever made. It's not really rock but with the violins and the drums and the vocals etc. Also the backing vocals are incredible

If you like violins and orchestration you should definitely react to April, from Deep Purple's self titled, a spiritual successor from Anthem, the song featured in this video.
As others have mentioned, the singer of this line up (Mark 1) was Rod Evans, an exceptional vocalist who later went to perform with Captain Beyond
Give April a reaction video, you won't regret it.

Correction this is most definately not Ian Gillan on vocals. This is Rod Evans.

Strings, Keyboards and the whole composition, courtesy of maestro Jon Lord. You should listen to his CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA, performed by Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Malcolm Arnold (Oscar winner for his music for movies) live at The Royal Albert Hall, recorded in 1969. It's in youtube too. I think you will enjoyed a lot, specially Jax. Cheers.

Just as Richie Rich says it’s not Mr. Gillan singing, but that is Ian gillan in the picture the one in the middle.. check out hard loving man from their album in rock. And also flight of the rat from the same album that is with Ian Gillan some great vocals in those two songs and also the instrumentals are phenomenal.

No, that 's not Ian Gillan singing on "Anthem" it's Rod Evans from Deep Purple Mark I. Instead of Ian Gillan it featured Rod Evans vocals, and Nick Simper bass. Gillan and Glover never joined until 1969 with a Proms concert in April 1969. Look it up!

Rod Evans was their singer for their first 3 albums in the 60s, Ian Gillan replaced him in 1969 after their third record, Deep Purple.
Nobody really knows what happened with Rod Evans after his early work with Deep Purple.

Nice reaction. Love purple, all of it, but imo, made in Japan is peak prime purple. Btw if you liked rod evans, check out captain beyond, the band he joined when purple showed him the door.

Jax has an affinity for violins? Odd, that, cause I just realised she's the double of Katherine Blake (your cue to say "What's the matter, fella, jealous?")
Interesting song choice - early DP in psychedelic mode. As noted Rod Evans is the singer here. (To hear Ian Gillan in "restrained" mode go to the vocal part of DP's Gemini Suite). I'm still waiting for someone to react on TH-cam to one of their epic jams (suggestion: the first 11.14 of this upload th-cam.com/video/8Tv1W2philc/w-d-xo.html)
