Deep Purple at their best. Led Zeppelin could never jam at this level. Incredibile young musicians ahead of their times.

Drummer's name is Ian Paice, he is the best rock drummer as for me. Actually all Purple mark II members were best musicians at that period.

For my money, one of the greatest performances ever captured on film or tape. Ritchie Blackmore was probably technically in advance of any other rock guitar player at that time. I think there may be a few different edits of this show. Wring That Neck was the first part. After the drum solo was a very cut up version of Mandrake Root, where Blackmore has switched from his Gibson ES 335 to a Stratocaster. The full song should actually feature a vocal section at the beginning. Wring That Neck alone could exceed 30 minutes in concert if the band was in the mood.

delorangeade wring that neck never had any vocals... you could be thinking of mandrake root, it also has A lengthy jam with excellent vocals in the beginning.

Yeah man, nice post! You know your stuff! Its too bad that this is all there is from that festival. And that it is so dark. There is too little Deep Purple Mark II Footage around.

    Fantastic!
Must have been back in the days when rock stars were real musicians.

And that is why Ritchie Blackmore is the greatest.

When performed live in 1970-1971 this song and another titled Mandrake Root, usually lasted 20+minutes. There is a Live in Stockholm show from November 1970 where both songs are played. They are each over 30 minutes. So, 1 hour, 2 songs, mostly instrumental. This show is pre-Machine Head days so no songs from that LP were played at the Stockholm show of course. The sound quality is excellent and I HIGHLY recommend anyone who digs Deep Purple live, to check out that entire concert. Child in Time is about 18 minutes long too.
But kudos to this channel for doing a reaction to this as Deep Purple are much more than Smoke on the Water and Highway Star. Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore, and the interplay between the two in the long versions from Stockholm is just a wonder to behold. Absolutely stellar musicianship and jamming. Its a perfect early-Mark II live set to combine with Made in Japan which was recorded in August 1972.

From the first time I saw this video and whenever I see it from that presentation, I have been just as surprised as you. This was an excellent reaction to a video that is not entirely known to Deep Purple fans. Greetings from Peru south of Americ and I hope there is more from the band on your channel ✌️🎧🎶

This first appeared as a 5 minute track on 1968 "The Book of Taliesyn" album which was the first Deep Purple lineup. But they would continue to do live jam versions of it, some videos are around TH-cam.

Awesome, thanks! Just for some background info on the actual video, Bilzen is a town in Belgium (Flanders) which used to have a yearly jazz and later more rock festival. The video was shown on national TV in a program called 'Tienerklanken', which means tiener = teenage klanken = sounds . Must have been quite the shock in '69 to see this on national TV.

Ian Paice on drums is 20 (or just turned 21) years old in this clip. Already established as the best drummer. Switched from violin to drums at 16 years of age.

Wow. Ian Gillan was drumming the congas in this concert. Didn't know he had joined Deep Purple already. One of the hottest rock voices of all times, he started out as a drummer. Not a bad one. You said it wasn't the Deep Purple you were used to. That's probably because you haven't heard much of their 60s-70s. Later line-ups, including the reunion 1984, were more -well, commercial and less innovative. Still a good rock band but nowhere near the legendary Mk 2 (the one that appear in this video) and the period 1969-1973. Correction - I am referring to the new music, the studio albums. Their live shows when they played mostly music from the peak period 1970-1973 were out of this world, they killed all other live bands.

There are many artists nowadays putting in lots of effort - mainly prog rock and prog metal bands. Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Tides From Nebula, IQ, Transatlantic, Threshold and many others are producing high quality, intricate, technical and very long songs. Check some of them out. Maybe start with Riverside 'Escalator Shrine' or Porcupine Tree 'Anesthetise'. You won't be disappointed. Also, a band called Anathema and the song 'Untouchable'.
