Excellent tip! I've been in the trade 3 years now, 2 and 1/2 as an apprentice. No JL has ever mentioned what you have.
Thanks for sharing and teaching us newbies!

Great video, I had to learn that one the hard way. Luckily no one was hurt down line.

I don’t know if you have a video on it or not, but I would love to know how exactly the cut out fuse works, and how it’s able to detect a fault and blow. Thanks

The fuse is a wire made of a metal that melts at a low temperature. The more current that flows through the wire, the hotter it gets. When too much current flows, the wire melts, breaking the circuit.

Thanks for the great information. I have a couple of questions. In my town it appears that some of the pole mount 1 phase transformers have internal protective links - no cross arm cutouts. Have you used these and if so how reliable are they? How do you replace a failed internal link? Second question. The town I live in has a fair amount of the neighborhoods with an underground distribution system. There is an area where the UG feeder is extended up a pole to feed about 40 houses on a dead end road with all pole mount OH equipment. The line side UG riser up the pole terminates in the bottom of the cutouts - rather than the top of the cutouts - bottom is the live end. Is this a somewhat typical application? Thanks again for all of your helpful information.

Great advice. I noticed you place the finger in front when placing the barrel. I’ve never seen anyone do that. I’m guessing since you remove the barrel from what I would call the regular way, you can’t use that front placement when it’s blown?

Are the polymer cutouts being used now instead of porcelain? I see alot of them now in Ontario.

Hey bob do you use a go pro ???

Most of my footage comes from my cell phone actually! I do have an older knock off go pro that I'm not worried about damaging I use sometimes and most recently got the newest go pro available but haven't familiarized myself with it yet

Honestly, I think the fuse inside the door is poorly designed. The door should be somehow longer, and the cutout longer, and the fuse element placed in the center of the tube instead at the bottom. This way when the wire goes out, the fuse still works correctly, but the dangling wire is nowhere close to the live side.
Excellent video tho of course. Thank you!

Just say no to cutouts -- oops, that's not the idea
