We are about modern weapons. We enjoy the old stuff and the new stuff, but what we've never discussed on MAC before are crossbows. Being heavily reengaged with hunting lately, I decided to jump into crossbows with a new Ravin R10 crossbow. This will open up a whole new dimension to our hunting and may even segue into a B channel dedicated to hunting. Anyway, join me on my first range session with my new Ravin R10 crossbow!

Crossbows are not archery. They should be reserved the old folks and crippled people. Get a real bow.

    • @Militaryarmschannel
      @Militaryarmschannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +517

That's so exceptionally silly. Rifles are for "crippled people". The childishness in various communities is astounding. People with disabilities aren't to be pigeonholed because you think they're less capable. I've seen a man without arms firing a bow. I hate it when people say, "Oh, that person has a disability so I assume they can't do X". Bullshit. th-cam.com/video/N07x9Z6VPW4/w-d-xo.html

Ya its awesome isn't it? Pretty cool that he's willing to go out of his way to point out someone who is stating facts. Fact is using a crossbow during archery seasons is ridiculous. Want to use it during rifle season? Crossbow away. You don't have to practice, you cant get busted drawing your cross"bow". You literally pick it up, sight it in and go. Actual archery (even Compound which is relatively easy these days, but still more difficult than a cross"bow") requires practice, form, knowledge on what and how to shoot. #yourbootlickinggameisstrong

Grew up around the corner from a Archey store that sold Matthew's bows. The owners taught me how to shoot both bow and rifle overtime in exchange for working for him as a young kid, putting on arrow heads, mowing yards, etc just random odds and ends no child labor laws being broken dont worry lmfao. Some of best life lessons I learned on that range & probably wouldn't be half the man I am today without their guidance.

Congratulations on your new Ravin, Tim.
    It's a cool crossbow.
Personally, I don't like to shoot at game beyond 40 yards with mine because my arrows still don't have near the velocity of a bullet and the deer or other game can move out of the kill zone on a 100 yard shot before the arrow arrives from even the fastest crossbow.
You're correct in saying arrows instead of bolts.
All modern crossbows shoot arrows, not bolts.
Bolts are a thing of medieval times and way shorter than the arrows used by modern crossbows !

So, a little CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. As you get better with a crossbow (or even a regular bow), your groups will get even tighter. Start putting up multiple targets, and only shoot one bolt (arrow) per target. That way you don’t destroy fletchings. I’m not a rich man, so I can’t afford to replace arrows all the time. Just a good rule of thumb.

    • @eeikewok2901

Military Arms Channel yep. They’re way more accurate than people realize.
Practice by hanging ping-pong balls by stings on that foam target wall. The only way you’ll get the balls to pop, is to hit them dead center. It’s a fun game to play at the range with other crossbow shooters.

I am in the market for a crossbow and have been looking at the market and learning what I could. Many... many years ago I shot a bow and was a archery hunter. I am retired military and fully retired now. Leading to my decision to transition to a crossbow over a compound bow. Because of how well your program and product presentation is in this. I instantly subscribed and of course the like button. I may not spend as much money for the Ravin. But it is suddenly a huge option for me. But the information was such that it really helps in my learning to get into a crossbow. Thank you.

I will say that crossbows are harder to hunt with than a traditional compound. More movement, in my opinion. Hunting is hunting. @Militaryarmschannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

No doubt, but you won't be shooting arrows at 400fps and won't be killing things at 100 yards. There is a trade-off.

The Chinese were known to use the crossbow as far back as the 4th Century BC. Why? Because they were far more effective in combat and they could train people to use them more quickly. That's like saying the US Military is cheating because we use stealth jets, GPS, attack helicopters, Mk19's and M1A1 tanks. Bzzzt, wrong answer. Technology rocks. I bet the same people saying crossbows take no skill to use have an AR15 in the closet with a red dot sight or magnified optic. Learn how to use iron sights and hit man sized targets at 600 yards like I can. if you can't, you're not a real rifleman.

No doubt and I'm not hating on the crossbow, and it definitely has it's uses. For me thought, I think the bow is a bit more even when it comes to what it can do and adapting to different scenarios.
Also you can shoot an arrow with a bow beyond 100 yards as well but probably won't be as accurate as a modern crossbow.

brievolz84 Too be fair Mac said "kill at 100 yards", if you're hunting anything bigger than foul and you take that shot with a bow you're kinda a jack ass. Isn't the point of hunting to kill the animal as clean as possible? Always how I was taught.

I have Mathews compounds and love them.
I have a Ravin crossbow and love it also.
Both have their own unique experience and are both enjoyable to hunt with. I have been bowhunting for 30 years and have killed probably close to 100 deer (many does) with a compound. I can say that with my Ravin I have zero fear of making less than a perfect shot if I just use proper ethics and wait for a vital presentation. Ravins are incredible. If they interest you, then never let anyone shame you !

In my opinion the only flaw is the way the crank handle is mounted on the crossbow, it is very secure but the open side is facing down. This is a issue folks any debris in that socket on a evening hunt for example its dark and you decide to decock. You could have a major issue if the socket is the least bit obscured with ice, snow, mud, the magnetic connection could fail and bingo dry fire is possible. So check that socket end and be safe. Good hunting

So no need to get them in FMJ or HP flavors or feeding issues, just a sharp stick and change the pointy end when you want to hunt. But the fun part of it all is no hearing protection or 200 dollars for a tax stamp is needed. Loads of fun.

Also, with a 6 foot 4 inch wing span, I'm thankful for not having to find the longest draw they make.

I learned archery as a teenager. I was poor enough that I bought my bow as a discounted "used" return at a local shop and couldn't afford any of the accessories, so no sights, no stabilizer, a rest from my father's old '80s PSE and some homemade string silencers made out of yarn from my mother's knitting kit. The arrows were second-hand as well, again from my father's old bow (which my brother got), and I rebuilt a bunch of his broken arrows, many different lengths and weights, and I doubt any were close to true. Set the whole bow up myself. I could hit a pie plate group at 40 yards with that thing after practicing for countless hours instinct shooting. I considered my effective range 30 yards, because I could get them inside of a drink coaster at that range, but I might have tried a follow up shot at 40. Anyway, I was young and had tons of time on my hands. Now I'm in my 40s, I have kids, I work a ton, and I don't have time to mess around learning to shoot archery again. I don't need the validation of using a "real" bow now either, especially the new ones with all the gadgets on them that are just as easy to shoot as a crossbow except for the draw weight. My old compound bow formed a crack in one limb years ago, so I would have to start from scratch with new equipment. I wouldn't want to take that old POS hunting anyway. I figured screw that, I'm looking at crossbows. I can set one up and sight it in as fast as I can a new rifle and just go use it since I know how to shoot said rifle pretty well. I'm pretty sure I'm going to take down some game with it this year too. 415 ft/s just blows my mind. As much power as a handgun round! Easy to set up and *cheaper* than the compound bow I was looking at. Wow has technology come a long way since the '90s.
