Gamblers Like Me: The Dark Side of Sports Betting - BBC Africa Eye documentary
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 ก.ย. 2019
- Sports Betting has exploded across Africa. But are the betting companies playing it straight? Do the punters really understand the odds they’re up against? And who is getting rich from the thrill of the beautiful game?
BBC Africa Eye follows one young football fan on a journey across Uganda, to find out what happens when global companies target some of the poorest and most vulnerable people on the continent.
Collins Muhinda has been betting on football since he was a kid - but on this journey, he discovers an industry that can have a devastating impact on the lives of young Africans, and an epidemic of compulsive gambling that makes him question his own betting habits.

The worst thing about gambling is making friends with other gamblers who will feed ur addiction...
😂😂😂 It's a community think of it as group therapy!🤣🤣
@@nelsonkiiru7252 😂
Soo true !!
i'd disagree, i think gambling is very much a solo activity, there's a psychology in gambling where it's you trying to outsmart everyone real gamblers think they're better than the other gamblers anyway making friends would be good in one way, its a good way to humble yourself when you lose and someones there to see it
So true.

@@momohraphael1700 😬🙏🏾😬
Gambling is bad, but it is someone’s choice whenever they bet. Rather, we have to do more as a society to discourage people from betting. Perhaps we may start with banning students, unemployed youths, and struggling people since they target the vulnerable.

Respect to Collins he reported this documentary as a pro hope BBC give him a full time job.
BBC and all whites take advantage of Africans 100% Documentaries like this are free to make. The people are not paid, but the tv is fully paid, the broadcasters own everything, the white journalists are paid, but the people aren't paid one penny. Probably Collins is paid in pennies too since he's local, not the same as the white journalists.
This is whites do.
Africans need to wake the fuck up and learn how much advantage they are taken of by whites.
We as Africans need to eliminate corrupted leaders and work together as young people of Africa. The reason all these youth can't find jobs is becuase of outsiders interference in our system.
Unfortunately the BBC have a history of exploiting people and not paying them money. Making them work for free under the assumption of free exposure.
And this guys is a bigot. Just replace "whites" "by blacks" and vice versa and let me know how racist and bigoted this is.
@@samlsd9711 that's funny because it clearly shows that the black people in authority are also corrupt in this film, so you defining people by their skin colour holds no weight
At first I thought that he was a BBC reporter because of the manner he presented the documentary, Kudos to him 👏 👍🏽
I was a huge gambler too. I use to stake huge amounts on football matches, I did this for year an only got little in return. It was beginning to look like a big problem because I only depended on it fo income which of more time than often does not go in my favour. My first told me he would help me quit because he worked as a cashier at the biggest lotto organisation in my town, he spoke to his boss and I got a job there and within two months working there I saw people lose time, fortune, savings and even on one occasion this guy lost his decade old marriage, I also saw old men weep miserably, I was such a sad sight. I quit the job after 2 months and couldn’t take it anymore, it’s been 2yrs now and I haven’t gambled.
Kudos for the bravery of quitting to work there. Best wishes ✊🏿

Gambling came to Africa like a storm and consumed most of our youth, me being one of them, If it wasn't for the Kenyan gov't to be strict on the regulations and rules forcing most of the illegal betting firms to shut down most of us, I myself included would have been washed up. I also have friends who were serious addicts. Gambling might seem good at first with the wins, but as you progress it drains your whole self mentally and financially

In my country Ghana, bet has become a way of life and a lot of us place our lives in it for hope. I used to hate it but when I completed University with second class in computer science but with no job, I decided to try it to increase the small amount I had to be able to purchase a laptop but ended up losing all. At a point my instincts tells me to keep hope in it and recover what I have lost but still I keep on losing. One night I decided to analysis it very well and I felt its damage to humanity and our society. In Africa bet have captured the focus of youth and destroyed our cognitive thinking for prospect future, everyday I have been thinking about the way forward to advocate to people to stop betting and put their hope in hard work. I wish am given any platform to share my side story in this and help educate people. @BBC News Africa

Wow! Amazing documentary. So informative! Many thanks Collins - from your backyard, Uganda ...
As a professional gambler i just want to leave my 2 cents:
There are 2 ways you can go about gambling: doing it for money and doing it for fun.
If you do it for fun, obviously you shouldnt depend on winning. Place a few dollar so you can enjoy the thrill of the game a little more; be happy if you win but dont miss your next rent if you lose (low stakes). If you are doing it for money, make sure you are actually making money. Dont depend on it before its actually profitable.
And most importantly for both scenarios: Choose the right place to bet. Bookmakers tweak the orders in their favour and if you still manage to be profitable, they ll just ban you. Even if its just casual betting for fun, there is no need to get scammed by a bookmaker. Bet on exchange markets.
