Waiting for this!!! Everyone hated doing this. Even the singers. James thought it was gonna have the worst reception. (Head probably liked it because he's done musicals.) But, after it was off and running it became hugely popular. I know you may not want to hear this, (and someone else mentioned) but you may want to go back and pay closer attention to the lyrics, because they actually further the plot.
Buffy's musical stands head and shoulders above other musical episodes in shows, others do it just for fun, Buffy advanced the plot drastically with theirs.
@@mattnar3865 I feel Xena creators put a lot of work into their musical episode which came before Buffy. Tapert and Raimi were pretty hardcore about creating it. The dvd commentary is pretty much everyone looking shell shocked when asked and costumer crying! It was really epic with the costumes mimicking a tarot deck. It did forward the plot, BUT the songs were no where near as polished or stand out as with Buffy.
I seem to remember a really long time ago you saying something about there being a musical ep and you not liking musicals...and me giving the advice to pay attention more to the lyrics than the songs themselves. Unlike most shows that have a musical episode, this one actually drives the plot forward. A lot. So very, very, very much is setup in this ep via the song lyrics. But yea, I agree, even if you don't particular enjoy this type of ep... it's worth going through for the reveal. As for the lipsyncing.... how do you think that musical eps are filmed? lmao. They always record songs in studio and lip sync on the set to the tracks. :) You can't get good quality vocal quality while singing and moving around a lot. You'd be hearing all kinds of heavy breathing and unstable vocals. Even pro-singers sing with a backup track a lot of the time so it covers up all the imperfections. All of the singing was done by the actors themselves. Alyson Hannigan apparently specifically requested to sing as little as possible, hence the lack of lines.

Musical episodes of TV shows go back to at least 1951 with the episode of I Love Lucy called The Operetta, but this episode was so well done and so well received that it is the episode that inspired modern shows to do musical episodes, for better or worse. 1) did you catch in Tara’s song after she discovers what Willow did to her that she uses the words “disgust” and “I must do what I must”, singing “wish I could stay” all signs that she is going to break up with Willow? Joss made every lyric count. 2) the ‘got the mustard out’ guy is David Fury, one of the main writers of Buffy and Angel. He also directed a 30 minute behind the scenes vid that is on TH-cam. You can react to it now, and would be the first reactor to do so! 3) the parking ticket lady is Jose Whedon’s co-producer on the show!
This is the gold standard of TV musical episodes! There's a legitimate story reason for the music to happen, and it moves the plot forward significantly. Every song was specifically written for the actors and their characters (Joss Whedon taught himself to write music just to be able to do it). I also don't think it was actually Xander who summoned the demon. He would have shown some guilt or recognition of what was happening a lot earlier if he really did it, and it is in his character to take the blame to protect Dawn. It wasn't her either, since she found the necklace in the shop after the music started, but it's a public shop. Anyone in the town could have left it there. It was probably originally meant to be another plot by the Trio, but their part was cut for time.

I think you went in deciding you wouldn't like it, and you found A LOT of negative, but you kind of glossed over that this episode is a plot explosion. SO MUCH HAPPENED. You might of missed some more of the subtle things.
Josh Whedon considered using a professional singer for Buffy's part. Sarah Michelle Geller convinced him not to, since this episode was so important for that character. I'm glad all the actors did their own singing: it would have seemed weird to have any of them dubbed. I thought it was a great episode.There were substantial plot line advancements for nearly every character. The episode wasn't just a gimmick, it actually mattered. ("All those secrets you've been concealing.....")

And for what it's worth, I don't know if he got criticized for lack of musical talent, but he came up with an episode that actually moved the season and character arcs forward, using music. I liked this episode a lot when it aired, and it has aged well. (Unlike me, who just gets "ugly and older" as Elton told us 5 decades ago!)
There is always lip-syncing. That's how movie musicals work. The actors will sing the tracks themselves in the studio, it's recorded and mixed so it sounds right, then in the film (or in this case episode), people will lip-sync to their own voice. It wouldn't sound right if it were recorded like regular in-scene dialogue, so that's why it's done this way.

It's OK if you don't like musical shows and Broadway-type stuff. To me, there's always something strange about a Broadway-type musical show that's a bit off from just listening to a band do a song. It's actually pretty awesome they worked in a believable and super-dressed up singing monster who made them sing and dance. Marti Noxon and David Fury are briefly shown singing and dancing. It could be bunnies!

Most Live-Action musicals. I love the old 2D animation Disney movies. Aladdin, Lion King, Emperor's New Groove, Sorcerer's Stone, etc. I also love some of the older live-action musicals like The Wizard of Oz and The Wiz but those are more nostalgic and maybe the goats in that category.
Well, there are a few exceptions, but they really don't sound good. Les Miserables and the live-action Beauty and the Beast are two that I can think of.
Yeah people obsess over this episode. I appreciate at it for what it is and the risks they took with it. But otherwise, it’s not one of my favorites. I really just find myself cringing through a lot of it.

The Demon, Sweet was played by three-time Tony Award winning actor, singer, & dancer Hinton Battle. He passed earlier this year at the end of January.

I absolutely hate musicals, as well. This one, however, actually began to grow on me each time my gf decided to re-watch it.

A half sized Broadway worthy show. Could well have expanded to a full length one, if the network have been willing.
