The inverter (I have a Sol-Ark hybrid) knows right away if the grid goes down, and IMMEDIATELY stops "back feeding," as you say. In solar we call it "exporting" to the grid. it is part of the UL certification. The utility will not let you export to them unless your device can do this (at least mine does, First Energy). I applaud electricians learning these things, I am a P.E. by trade, and have studied this extensively. One other hard requirement they have, was an an external disconnect outside with a visual handle (non-service disconnect), in spite of the inverter going to island mode.

@@glee21012 the "visual" part bothers me....for any "power provider" to mandate that.

You are only back feeding if you have a battery when the power goes out. Most systems inverters turn off when the utility goes off. (A grid tie system) Now if you have a battery then that’s where back feeding really comes in to play because when the power goes out the solar system is still 100% functioning because of the battery.

FALSE, the controller for an enery storage system auto turns backfeed when utility loses power.

The issue is not many electrician understand just what is going on. As this is Commercial\Industrial type system people are dealing with. Hell most think a Ground Rod is protection from being electrocuted. With no path even back to the source. You know how many people died from that myth? Why Pools and Saunas have special grounding needs. As the area is wet all the time. Along with a metal fence around them.
I think It's time the NEC start regulating this RV shore power\inverter\trans fer switch installers. As these people that think they know what is going are are experts in Bonding\Grounding. When I can walk up and touch the body of the RV and feel current flowing though them. As I test the Inverter ability to switch the bonding relay off or on. When disconnected from shore power to inverter power.. As most do not have these built in. So you need a special relay\breaker that can make that change for you..
And it's got so bad. Fire Departments see them installs. They just let it burn to the ground. They been hurt by these 400amp -1000amp battery banks...

you know the codes are getting way out of hand and overly complicated when you need a panel of experts to interpret each section of code.
