You know, it really is...his voice is almost unearthly, ethereal, out of this world. I would also describe it as aching or longing, which really makes his songs so emotional & deep sounding. His singing really stops you I'm Your tracks whatever you're doing, when he comes on. The Band & this singer in particular are hugely underrated in the annals of rock and pop music history.
@@tomgebarowski8156 Yeah. You can hear the pain and pure emotion in his voice whenever he sang, especially in songs like She Knows, Country Boy, and I Shall Be Released. This makes all of his songs more sad, especially seeing how he died
Richard still sounded real strong here and those horns sure are a sweet touch. The Band second album is a 5 star classic I hope they play at my funeral.
Never knew there was video (film) from these shows. I coveted, and still covet, that Fender fretless that Rick plays, but as so many commenters say, Richard is in top form. What a band the Band was!
It's over 50 years old and it sounds so fresh. I saw them in 1971, I think, at the Albert Hall. This takes me back to when great music was played by great musicians.
Im 45 in 2022 and these guys are by far my favorite band to listen. Love all the different instruments sounds these guys make together. Definitely something i got it from parents influence as a child.
Finally a song with Richard on lead vocals… and they barely even show him. Damn. He was the best singer in the group and he always got the shrift when being filmed. They never put a camera on him.
I believe that camera crew were not given some liners of who's signing on each song. But yeah, in this rare occasion you encountered a band with 3 lead singers (who sometimes share their duties at different times sometimes in a single song) and honestly I would get confused to film and follow that consistently lol. Hoping this (and Don't Do It) are not the only ones recorded on film that night and they get a re-release soon
There were a couple of comments made from individuals who were disappointed that Richard Manuel was not hardly seen in this video even though he sang lead. I did happen upon a video of King Harvest filmed at a jam session in Woodstock and Richard was definitely seen singing and playing. Video is called The Band-Jam and uploaded by promised land.
he played it a lot on the first two albums I believe. Its an Ampeg I think. I can be a nerd about this stuff :) think he played a Gibson SG a lot around that time too.
Agreed. To simply call it country rock completely sells them short. For instance what is "country" about The Shape I'm in, Chest Fever or Rag Mama. And what's rock about long black veil. Ask Taj about the Band; he says they're the only thing comparable, musically, to England's Fab 4. High praise, from a man who has seen a whole lot.
@@JohnHaslam-nh8tn The Long Black Veil was not written by Robbie, it was originally a country song, but I love The Band's version, because Rick is my favorite Band singer.
Hanneje: true, Long Black Veil was not a Robbie song. I believe originally written by folks in the 40s or 50s, just as you say, as a country song. I was responding to KHhSC... King Harvest and also elsewhere to Rockin' Chair. I suspect part of that "country" stuff comes out of when they were featured on Time magazine's cover in 1969. And also Levon's soliloquies in TLW about the melting pot of genres that the 5 of them represented, musically, better than anyone before, or since, imho
What a perfectly balanced Force of (Musical) Nature The BAND were… 🙌 Restraint, sound(!), harmony, soul & authenticity to burn! 🤷🏻 & probably an interesting & pretty fair example of how long a group/collective of exceptional artists can maintain a collaborative peak - 🥂💐

Top three track from the Band, I love this song so much! This performance - camerawork not the best - but redeemed by getting Robbie's hands for the solo!
The finest musician ever, of the Rock era ,Mr Garth Hudson , must have been getting his beard trimmed or something. as the camera person omitted him altogether! To be fair the camera work is not too clever, but to miss out Garth is tantamount to treason! Jeezo!
This was their best music live. They kept it faithful to the studio recordings and their voices still were strong. By the Last Waltz they still had the energy the sound was a little sloppy and the voices showed their age except Levon.
Levon, Danko and Hudson went on for 20+ years after Robbie split and another 13 after Manuel passed. During that time they toured incessantly and made music every bit as good as this video. Even after throat cancer Levon hosted rambles at his home until the bitter end. The content produced by the original lineup was certainly impressive but they demise of the original band was only the BEGINNING of an amazing musical journey.

His singing is very soulful! That's the key word I'd use to describe it, good or bad, it's always soulful!
King Harvest is an alltime classic as well.
Richard's voice at prime and he still looked really well. Glad this exists.
The Band ❤
We need the whole concert please!
It wasn’t all filmed.

One of the gratest songs in Rock-music, ever!
Great shot of Allen Toussaint watching the horn section playing his charts.
Rock of Ages one of best live recording ever

Can music get better than this? Richard's voice. Levon on the drums. Robbie's lead guitar....magic!
Garth's organ!!!

What a disappointing video. Richard on camera for just a few seconds. A damn shame
At least they did Robbie's guitar solo right. I don't know how many times cameras pull away when the lead guitar starts to pull out the stops!
Pardon me. If he was, as you say the best singer in the group, why wasn’t he singing lead on damn near every song like Robert Plant or Roger Daltrey.

I'm glad to pay those union dues
Just don't judge me by my shoes
Scarecrow and a yellow moon
And pretty soon a carnival on the edge of town
King Harvest has surely come
Last year, this time, wasn't no joke
My whole barn went up in smoke
Our horse Jethro
Well he went mad
And I can't ever remember things bein' that bad
Then here come a man with a paper and a pen
Tellin' us our hard times are about to end
And then, if they don't give us what we like
He said, "men, that's when you gotta go on strike"
Corn in the fields
Listen to the rice when the wind blows 'cross the water
