when Carl was explaining his deck, the entire time I was laughing and thinking "There is NO WAY this is this pile of murder is going to work, but I WANT to be wrong"
Yeah he made it sound so jank, but that was actually really impressively fast and (seemingly) consistent for having 80 cards in it.
Makes me wonder how good the deck would have been if he had gone for a standard decksize.
@@Gabriel64468i mean its built on top of a simic food shell, which was so broken it needed like 3 bans to put it out. So it would have been even more consistent. The saheeli combo itself was banned out of standard.

I don't think it actually wound up mattering (Carl had an untapped land in hand the first time, and it didn't get tapped the second time), but Field of the Dead actually enters the battlefield tapped. That drawback wound up mattering decidedly less than the designers intended, as it still got banned in multiple formats. But if you're ever playing FotD in EDH, just know that it's a tapland.

Yeah I had not played the card since it was banned 4 years ago, and even then I only played it for some weeks 😅 I forgot it entered tapped. Luckily, it didn't end up mattering since I had untapped lands in my hand :)
@lhii616 I'm really disappointed in your comment. Players accusing people of cheating willy-nilly when they are obviously not cheating is hurtful to the community in general. People make mistakes and misread cards in most games of magic. They are simply not usually filmed, so people don'r notice. You can do better than this I'm sure :)

The moment in game three around the Censor bluff was incredible! Love the interview format and think this really sets the channel apart from other Magic channels.
+1. Reminds me of the segments on old poker shows like The Big Game where after a big hand one of the players explains what their decision making process was. Except the interview is taken moment-of so they don't even know if their reasoning is right yet!
Carl is like every new deck brewer putting in 24 lands and just puts in every good card in the format and then he notices he has too many cards so he can just play yorion😂
I love that his strategy was just “add more banned cards”.

$30 budget vintage is a surprisingly powerful format it would be cool to see you guys build your own decks and play them against each other

That was beautiful. When they both go into interviews about the censor and Thoralf predicting that Karl would not fall for it, only for Karl to think it was a 5D chess move and fall right into the trap. In the end, they were both wrong with their predictions.

Thoralf: "Just two, no big deal."
Carl: "Yes."

As a mostly commander player i love to see how the history of other formats look. Card market also having a very clear vision of boardstate and decision making helps a lot too!

I find it interesting when Carl talks about going into the interview. I always wondered if these were recorded afterwards and worded like they were done during the game.
They've got a really good behind the scenes video from a couple weeks back, super enlightening and 300% worth a watch!
i really enjoyed the matches and the explanation with the toughtseize - it's always interesting listening to the explanations for the thoughts behind the plays and the toughtseize/duress plays stump me many times why one card was picked and not the other : )
Carl is either extremely lucky or a mad genius in a level us normal humans cannot comprehend
This is great. I like seeing these kinds of things because it makes some of the banned cards make sense. Ive heard plenty of why they are banned but seeing them played helps a lot.
Im still watching game 3 and i am having so much fun! The chemistry between you too had me chuckling and the production quality is 2nd to none. Way to go everyone! The editors also do a fantastic job stitching all this together :D
Even though I know Thoralf is the better player, even though Carl unintentionally cheated, even though Thoralf's deck seems a lot more consistent, even though Thoralf seems like the main character whenever he plays, I can't help but root for Carl every time, without fail. He's too lovable.

It's so hard to root for either of you n.n Thoralf plays decks that are super close to my heart, and Carl is so thoughtful in most of his plays. It is truly a great dynamic that y'all have.
Once upon a time into goose into oko was the most busted start during that time. I remember the only counter was to run Noxious grasp (think that was the name) which was meant to be a sideboard card but was never dead because everyone ran Oko. It was insane those cards were supposed to be standard legal alongside Uro and Yorion etc.
I just want to say that I sincerely enjoy your videos Carl and Thoralf. Your MTG content is always a highlight of my week, thank you!

the real play at 9:40 was; -5 oko to exchange the food for the goblin shaman, then blink the oko with the cat to reset it and +2 it again.
In the matchup, I think digging further is better. If it was a more grindy one, more Oko activations and loyalty would be nice yes.

Thoralf really has such a brightness when he is playing and Carl plays off it so well. Love the chemistry of this channel.
Somethingt funny that I saw was that in the last game you could have won with Thoralf's combo through exchanging the food with Thassa, then blinking Oko with the Guardian (from Saheeli) to create another food, then next turn steal the Inverter to win. A fun possibility I saw lol.

Man this video was a trip down memory lane for me. I played most of my magic during the period between Khans block and Thrones of Eldraine, the period that accounts for some of pioneer's most powerful cards and it felt like every spell featured in both decks was one I'd cast a thousand times before
Its so crazy that they do the interviews in the middle of the game. Its actually a completely different meta game because of that

I've really enjoyed the historic matches you've done with Frank Karsten using the 1997, 1998, and 1999 World Championship decks. While I figure you're already planning on doing later years, do you got any plans on doing 1996, 1995, and 1994? I know that that might include some "creative" solutions for some of the cards (what with the '94 deck just having a casual Power Nine in it) but I would love to see those decks played!
We are planning to ideally do one for every year since 1993 :) (we'd come up with something else for the years that don't have gold bordered precons)

There's a channel called Team APS that a few years ago was doing a lot of creative card game content with YuGiOh: Drafts, "can we make a deck around this card" challenges, random card haul deck building challenges, etc. At the time I was hoping beyond hope that I, as an MTG player much more than a YGO player, could find an MTG channel that did the same sort of interesting creative stuff.
While it's not exactly the same, this channel really fills that want for me. You guys are incredible. Thank you so much for this continually interesting, creative, and above all entertaining content.

That sounds really fun :) we are just trying out the tournament series for the second time soon, and we have to be very careful with them as they are really expensive and, if ever we come up with an idea that doesn't work, we are stuck committing 7 videos to it 😅 but if ever we start feeling safer to experiment with the tournaments, this seems like a fun idea :)

Despite all the times Expressive Iteration has ruined my life, I also played it for more than a year every night in a grixis control deck on Arena and loved it. It is one of a small few cards that I find so memorable and beautiful that I want to frame and hang it up like my foil Shadowmoor lands.
Game two Carl ought to have cycled the veil in response to oracle in hopes of hitting mystical dispute. Longshot but always worth a try
