The Lab LA is BULLDOG and Mixmag's weekly live stream and post-work unwind, where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our LA office. This Friday, December 6, we welcome Lady Starlight to the fold with a very special live set.
Colleen Martin aka Lady Starlight is true techno visionary. Her whirlwind live performances encompass everything that's special about the sound. Raw power, sheer velocity and no compromise are themes that run through every set she plays.
Techno purists will recognize her for her live performances with Surgeon, a formidable pairing, and also her recent releases via Len Faki's Figure imprint and Lucy's Stroboscopic Artefacts label. The masses however may be more accustomed to her work due to her frequent collaborations and long-standing relationship with Lady Gaga.

Lady Starlight an amazing musician that knows her stuff good vibes. It takes lots of patience and acquired skills over years of reading and performances to do what she does. Much respect.
Indeed, looking back at her older sets and how she has crafted this minimal yet impactful style is impressive. Her interviews are always entertaining as well.

She's alright. Music is a bit too all over the place, but it's not bad either. I;m not saying music should have clear melody or structure, but this is a bit too messy.
She uses a lot of Polyrhythm which for some can indeed sound chaotic for some, but for fans of her somewhat minimal style of techno and use of polyrhythm, there is a lot going on in her live shows to appreciate.
@@LimeEye13 Nah it's just too messy. I love music that uses polyrhythm to progress the sound and give it variability, I also like her recorded stuff. I just find this too messy. To each his own tho
@@s.saint.claire.273 Indeed, to each their own. I didn't see it as messy, but then again improvisation can have that impact. There are a number of jazz sets I've seen where I've walked away feeling it was a mess, while others found it entrancing. I found this particular set a bit more restrained than her others, with pockets of ideas playing out. That's the fun of such live sets though, you never really know where it will lead.

I'd personally group them all together and run them through similar effect chains, the noises all just sound like noises smushed together rather than being more cohesive. Also, probably just nervous but timing has been off a few times unless that's just her style then, I should just shut up I suppose. Not to be harsh, remember I'm here listening and interested still

I hear ya. The analogue throw back is fun, but throwing production nos of channels at a live set without any variety isnt exactly interesting. I think 14 year old me playing with loops would have been happy with a starter like this ...
