Catching Rio Grande Cichlids On The Fly - Fly Fishing the Llano Uplift in Mason Texas

  • A couple of buddies and I head to the Texas Hill Country in search of Rio Grande Cichlids. These unique fish are a subtropical and tropical species that are native to the Rio Grande and Nueces River Basin. However, they can be found throughout Central Texas. Worried that the Texas freeze had wiped them out from our honey hole, I was happy to see that they are still thriving.

You would like the San Gabriel river here in Leander Texas, tons of other food fly spots too

I caught a beautiful mature male in Bull Creek near St. Edwards Park in Austin. This may be the farthest east you can find Rio Grande Cichlids. I wish TH-cam would allow me to share a photo.

They are the coolest fish to me. I still haven't caught a big one. I see people catching them in Brushy Creek in Round Rock. I'd like to give that a try soon.

Very nice! I love catching hill country fish on a 3 or 4wt fly rod. Lots of fun. That bass u said was a Guadalupe Bass, looked more like a LMB or spotted to me, the Guads tend to not have such a defined lateral line. But i could be wrong. Keep up the good work. Tight lines

It's funny that you mention that. Right after I said that it was a Guadalupe Bass, I turned to my buddy and said that It might be a Largemouth. I cut that part out after I got home and referenced some pictures. That fish was confusing to me because it had features of both. The prominent lateral line made me think Largemouth, but the yellow stripes along the belly, the color of the eyes, and the depth of it's mouth had me thinking Guadalupe. Still not entirely sure...

Good catches of a cool species for Texas. Don’t forget or neglect to handle fish with wet hands, it sets a good example and best practices.

Good point about wet hands. However, a lot of times when fly fishing your hands are already wet due to the fly line running through your hands all wet. Never can be too safe though.

@Gerado Huerta, some of that’s true in that while retrieving fly line there is some water from the line, but it so simple to dip the free hand into the water, to unhook and show/ demonstrate the fish, release it and re-dry my hand on my shirt or trousers and keep fishing. I do it routinely with both casting lures or while fly-fishing. And like here, I make it a point when fishing with others. It’s just the right example and a best practice in catch and release fishing, particularly when shared with TH-cam subscribers.

Does anyone eat those cichlids as a panfish? They sell here in Hawai'i for about $15.00 in petshops. I am surprised there aren't any in our streams like every other species of cichlids that people have dumped after losing interest. What weight rod you using? Aloha. PS. That place, and species looks perfect for a Tenkara rod.

No, you don't hear about people eating those cichlids. It probably happens occasionally, but definitely not common. I was using a 6 weight that day, but would love to get out there with a 3 or 4 weight. It's funny that you mention Tenkara. We were talking about that quite a bit over the weekend. It would be great out there!
