Lou, I am so glad I saw this video today. The one group we NEVER see represented in TH-cam Car videos is the Autoworker. Many people seem to forget that in order to have cars to worship, admire, debate and occasionally drive, we need people like John to build them in the first place! In reflecting upon his forty year career at the GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin, we must regretfully consider that that plant is long gone. As for these full-size Chevrolets from the 60s, they once made over a million a year from the State of California to the Province of Quebec and just about everywhere in between.

There is a Car Building Plant in Fremont, CA about 30 miles south east of San Francisco. I believe it was a General Motors Plant. They build Tesla's there now. Across the street use to be the Fremont Drag Strip. We would go there in 1969-1973 when in High School and watch drag racing. Satellite view of the Tesla Plant. www.google.com/maps/search/Car+Building+Plant+in+Fremont,+CA/@37.4924141,-121.9413114,2800m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

This a seriously impressive '64. This body style came out in my high school junior year and was the last "squared off" full size Chevy--the '65 was totally different. Truly a beautiful machine. Thanks Lou!

Awesome 409 if my memory serves correctly they made this 1961 to 1965. It was the predecessor to a 427 (1962 1963) z11 code. but that's not to be confused with the 427 based on the 396 block. great video Lou

Hey Lou, Back when I was a kid in high school I worked at a ARCO gas station in Falls Church, Virginia and there was a older woman that lived across the street that had a 1964 4 door Biscayne with a 6 cylinder, black w/ automatic. She took such care of this car like it was her baby. The steering wheel was huge and the turning radius was also huge. I'll never forget that woman and brings back such good memories Lou, thanks for posting

Awesome Lou :*: A sweet sounding 409 with some nice revs corked & uncorked. My Dad had a 64 Bellair 283 that we took to Naples Italy for a 3 year Navy tour. Fiats bounce off like it was a tank. Being a long body car we had to make 2 or 3 point turns on some mountain roads

This would probably only be a single WOW car, but that 409 with cutouts puts it in triple WOW territory!! When I was in high school, in the fall of 1964 a guy came tooling in the parking lot with a brand new 1965 Biscayne with the 409 4speed. It was king of the hill back then. There are no muscle cars a person in high school can afford today, unless he has parents with deep pockets. Most young people put a loud muffler on a Honda and think they have a hot car. The little Honda engine puts out almost enough power to be the starter motor on something like this 409.

Wow Lou what a car! A 409 to boot! My Lord that car had nothing out if place on it. That car did not even have fly dirt on it. That car was better than off the assembly line geez it was remarkable. The owner was cute too he sure loved that engine sound. What a neat owner and all the treats in the trunk were awesome too! Thanks for sharing Lou that red is great nothing I like better on a sleeper car!

BTW he traded in a 1949 Desoto on it and got $ 100 for it LOL 😂

Super cool car. I actually prefer the sleeper look of the Biscayne or Bel Air to the more upscale Impala SS. The 409 Biscayne 2 door post was the choice of Chevy guys who planned on drag racing because it was lighter than an Impala SS but still available with all the same drivetrain options

Okay , now just imagine you're sitting at a light and your in a fast modern day car and this Biscayne pulls up along side you . You look and you see this old guy in this red sedan and you think ok I can take him . Then he opens up the cork and revs the engine and now you're like what the hell did I get myself into . Before you know the light turns green and that old guy in that red sedan is gone with a roar and smoke . Wow !

Always loved the 409 Chevy's even though I'm a Mopar/Ford guy. Chevy always made the coolest full size performance cars. My personal favorite is a 66 Biscayne 2 door post with the factory L72 427/425hp-4 speed. Before 1970...if you were a Chevy man and you wanted the hottest big block back then you had to buy either a Corvette or a full size car. Biggest engine you could get in an RPO Camaro, Chevelle, or Nova was the L78 396/375hp...unless you went the COPO route

That looks like your basic 2 stage paint: base coat, clear coat and it's stunning; flawlessly applied. A foregone conclusion, it's much better paint and technique - from the factory - than would have been put on a 2 door '64 Chevy Biscayne back in the day.

Some corrections please: The complete Shop Manual consists of the 1961 Shop manual PLUS the thinner 1964 Shop Manual Supplement. The Supplements were issued for purchase in 1962, 1963 and 1964. The lap belts are probably added as an option, either dealer or owner installed, not as standard equipment, at least not in NC. But the 1963 and 1964 did have the bolt bosses for the belts as standard.
I bought the belts for my new 1963 from Sears.
The dual brake master cylinder is not original to this car. But it represents a much-needed improvement over the original.

Attended the show & spoke w/Mr. Chrobak @ length.....a nicer guy you'd be hard-pressed to meet. For me, his immaculate Biscayne was the stand-out vehicle of the show! Not sport mirrors, Lou...just plain, outside rearview mirrors, w/the passenger-side being a dealer-installed accessory. Biscayne notwithstanding, that is some strikingly impressive upholstery, & there were NEVER any finer, more integrated, factory tachometers than Chevrolet installed in their big Chevy's in '63 & '64! Notice the unique radio block-off plate....many times un-informingly referred to as a "radio delete plate".......i.e., NO SUCH animal! A special sight is that magnificent L31/400hp/409-only, splayed-snorkel(s), chromed air cleaner assembly. THOSE were halcyon days!

M20L35 rhanks, these 409’s ( and others)were the dreams around Wolf Lake IN , where I graduated HS from: not far from Fort Wayne/WARSAW/SOUTH BEND Chevrolet & GM Dealers with many types sold... We had many of rarer Models Of early 60’s pass through the Drive In Restaurants/Cruise Nights/Theaters/Garage hang outs. Interestingly, the 63 and Half 427 Fords, Fuel Injected later 50’s Pontiacs/ Chrysler’s ( rare,) , And Corvettes were dramatic......Some Of Factory And/ Dealer Options were amazing: this 409 Biscayne is great!!

Another Biscayne on steroids. 😎 64 was a great year for Chevy passenger cars. Heck, I'd drive one with a 6-banger and Powerglide. 😁

Lou, just a quick question. This is spectacular. However, the 409/400hp and 425hp both had aluminum intake manifolds. This appears to be steel because it's painted Chevy orange. Any information on it?

    VIN code is 1964 (4) , Biscayne 6 cylinder (11) , 2dr Sedan (11) , L.A. Plant (L) , sequence # 192652
Those reverse lights were an Option as they were also for the Bel Air and Impala .
    The 409 VIN should be 4 1211L192652 , but i see that the Cowl tag has 1964 12-11 .

Does sequence # 192652 refer to the engine production sequence? It seems like that could explain why it is not on the cowl tag. Perhaps the "match" is accomplished by the, "1964 12 11" designation, the "12" being key. Just a thought from a wannabe expert. lol

True, I'm thinking that the code 1111 denotes the 6 cylinder 2dr Biscayne base model for trim and then the engine option on the Cowl is 1211 .
If every stage of the assembly has workers that are told to read the Build sheet or watch for a written code , they don't know what the car will be once it drives off the line.
The Cowl tag does give the colour as Desert Beige with fawn interior Cloth-Vinyl . The BODY (VN) matches for the L.A. Plant in Van Neys where the VIN code is L . Teh ACC 2M is for Groupe 2 M= Powerglide automatic.
Total Biscayne 's made were 173,900 but the Van Neys Plant had is own sequence system for all the cars they made that day . The DATE is 4th week of June . The car is nice , but the back-up lights and passenger mirror were optional unless the Dealer installed them on a work-order .

Just a trivia note about GM's racing flag badge at the 02:22 mark . Louis Chevrolet was known for his racing in Europe and then moved to the USA.
As a tribute to him after his death in 1941, the dual flag badge has the checker victory flag and the red flag with the Fluer du Lis flag for France.
One problem.....Chevrolet was born in Switzerland where the Town had a French name .
It was assumed he was French .

Does anyone know if the station wagon wheels (which could handle 8.25" wide tires) and sway bars could be optioned for sedans in '64? If you had stock-looking wheels and a Biscayne with a 409 and 4-speed, it was pretty stealth but the exhaust sound usually gave it away.

The factory horsepower rating of the 409's was actually an honest one compared to the vast majority of high performance engines from that era. I saw a bone stock 1962 409/409 engine on an engine dyno and the peak horsepower number was 406 horses at 6000 RPM...actually a few horsepower less than the factory rating. The later Mark IV 396/427 big blocks were capable of making a lot more power than the 409. By 1964 the performance capability of the 409 had peaked and was no longer responding to cam changes and things like that so Chevy released the L78 396/425 horsepower engine mid year 1965 and discontinued production of the 409
