  • The Jaguars have just inked the biggest contract in franchise history by signing Trevor Lawrence to a $275M/5-year contract. I'll give my thoughts on the extension, all the good and all the bad.

    I appreciate yah honesty on this channel. One of the only Jags channel that’s objective about us.

      For sure! I try my best to be objective and honest about things although I do sway back and forth being overly optimistic or pessimistic. I do think it's a fair take to say they might have jumped the gun, the move will probably be for the best, but there's that small risk of being stuck in a hard place for about half a decade. It's just too much to bet for the minimal incentives you're rewarded for being right.

    I think you're wrong when you say the difference isn't that much. If Trevor balls out this year, and they try to sign him next off-season, it'll be much higher than what you're thinking. This is the best price they're going to get him based off of his potential. You have to look at market value. Look at Jared Goff. He's not a top 5-9 quarterback but he's a franchise quarterback that they can win with. So he gets paid what a franchise quarterback would get paid. 50mil is a franchise QB value right now regardless if they're top 5 or top 10 or top 15. Not to mention the fact that now they can structure the rest of the team with that contract now in place, and the increased cap next year. This is fantastic news, and very exciting for our team. He's the best quarterback we've had since Mark, and will surpass him in the near future. This is a time to be excited just like we were with Josh Allen getting signed. It shows the organization will reward hard work and that we are willing to keep talent on the roster. He seems to have to mindset that regardless if this deal happens or not he has one job to do, and that's to bring a superbowl championship to jacksonville. Now he gets to prove it. And I think he will. I'm ready for a monster season and I think it will happen. Go jags!

      In a scenario where he wins the Super Bowl and MVP while putting up 50 touchdowns, maybe he earns $60M APY. A lot of the market increasing now will be in response to this deal, so where it is at the end of the season probably won't be the same as if he was extended. He would've had to have taken a discount to extend him if you weren't 100% confident, which if you are that's cool, it's a matter of opinion. I'm around 80%.

    • @11Taytum11
      @11Taytum11 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @cardiacatsbrand if he wins the superbowl this year, his extension would be more than 5 million more a year. Now that his extension is done, dak is going to get done, Tua is going to get done, and others. Even if we get a 5 million a year discount isn't it worth it? Look at the team. As long as he is on it we don't have the ability to move on past him. We will win too many games to draft a replacement. So we have to pay him. How much does this cost? At least 50mil a year which is the going rate. 5 mil a year more is not a bad price to pay for someone who wants to be here, embodies the culture to make us better, and who has the upside to be better than this contract.

    I'm fine with it. This is what it takes to keep a franchise QB nowadays. At least it is behind us now and we can move forward. I just hope the O-Line can keep him upright and healthy.

    • @cardiacatsbrand
      @cardiacatsbrand  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It will likely be the best outcome, but you can never use the reason of it being better than the past to sign someone. If he’s not worth it then he’s not worth it, you’d rather try and get it right than settle, even if you miss on other guys. That said, I expect him to stick around and be a good QB.

    People gotta understand, the way the market is trending on QBs we will be seeing billion dollar contracts within the next decade. People thought Russ and Watson’s contracts were insane with they came out, but Hurts, Herbert, Mahomes, Burrow etc are all gonna be making tons of money and each time a new QB is up for a max deal they keep pushing the line further and further. Pay Lawrence now then in a year when we’re seeing 600-700 million dollar contracts it’ll look reasonable

    • @cardiacatsbrand
      @cardiacatsbrand  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It'll look better as time goes on, but the guys that are up to be paid aren't the same as the guys who got the market here. Waiting another season would've probably led to the price going up a few million at most, so the incentive of saving just that every year isn't really enough to rush the decision for me. I think you gotta be 100% confident in your QB to extend them well before the end of their contract, but obviously the league entirely disagrees with that sentiment.

    • @cardiacatsbrand
      @cardiacatsbrand  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Me too, but it carries that small risk they jumped the gun. My philosophy is that to sign that early extension when you have the fifth-year option and the franchise tag, you have to be 100% confident he's the guy who can bring a Super Bowl to Jacksonville. I'm hovering around 80% right now after the last season, but it'll probably age well.

    Was anybody 100% confident in Josh Allen after the ‘22 season? But then he popped off and everyone says we should’ve signed him a year sooner. He’s signed for up to 7 years now. Contract will be great by then.

      Allen only had one good year in a contract year

    • @cardiacatsbrand
      @cardiacatsbrand  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Main difference is Josh Allen went from being worth around $21M a year to $28M plus incentives. Lawrence wouldn't have that same percentage of increase, and probably not even the $7M a year bump. I think at most, in a world where Lawrence wins MVP and the Super Bowl, we're talking about him earning something around $60M APY. The logic for me is that if you're ceiling for the move is to save something around $25M, it's not enough for me to stray from a philosophy of only extending your QB if you're 100% confident they can win the Super Bowl or you're out of time and options.

      If you go by that logic then that means the rookie deal is really just three years and he gets paid on average $44.5M for seven more years starting now. In reality, he is valued at $55M a year and that value goes into place in 2026 after the fifth year option.

    This is what the "We have to pay him NOW or it will cost more later" guys NEVER understand...
    1) Worrying about how much an NFL team will have to pay...when they PRINT money and salary cap goes up every year is Foolish...do NFL Teams worry if you can pay your mortgage?
    2) IF Jags waited..and Trevor puts in ANOTHER 20 turnover season...and plays "OK" but does NOT play great...or worse...he plays very mediocre (which fanboys would blame on Baalke anyway since it's NEVER Trevor's fault)...Did we REALLY have to pay him league leading $$ right now?
    3) If we wait and he plays GREAT...you happily pay more because you are now SURE that he is elite...right now we are NOT sure but paid him anyway..and paying more next year would probably mean $60m a year...that's only $5m more that now...which is CHUMP CHANGE for NFL Teams
    I am ok that they got it out of the way...but QB economics are ridiculous...this deal will be surpassed as they all are..but Trevor for darn sure has NOT played to a level worthy of being highest paid QB in league...no way.
