2000 SPECIAL REPORT: "WAS J. EDGAR HOOVER A PASSING BLACK MAN"????

  • Nearly 50 years after the death of founding FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, research may reveal that the crime fighting bureau chief was actually African-American according to “The Washington Post.”
“My grandfather told me that this powerful man, Edgar, was his second cousin, and was passing for white,” says Millie McGhee, an African-American relative of Hoover’s. “If we talked about this, [Edgar] was so powerful he could have us all killed. I grew up terrified about all this.”
McGhee began to uncover facts about the possibility of Hoover’s Black ethnicity after she dug through altered court records, conducted oral interviews with both white and Black Hoovers and enlisted licensed genealogists who determined that Hoover was indeed a relative of hers.
The mystery of Hoover’s genealogy has become a topic of interest recently due to the the Clint Eastwood film “J. Edgar” released earlier this month. In the film, Eastwood makes no mention of Hoover’s race, much to the chagrin of his Black relatives such as McGhee.
“Since the movie has come out, so many people have asked me why my information about Hoover’s black roots was not included,” said McGhee who has authored two books on the topic, “Secrets Uncovered: J.Edgar Hoover-The Relative” and “Secrets Uncovered : J. Edgar Hoover Passing For White?”
Could J. Edgar Hoover also be African-American?
In some quarters this racial rumor has been whispered about as widely as Hoover’s sexuality. Eastwood’s avoidance of the issue adds intrigue to the movie’s main storyline. As Hoover was digging up dirt on presidents, spying and harassing civil rights leaders, he was cross-dressing and carrying on an affair with Clyde Tolson, the FBI’s number two man.
McGhee said: “In the late 1950s, I was a young girl growing up in rural McComb, Mississippi. A story had been passed down through several generations that the land we lived on was owned by the Hoover family. My grandfather told me that this powerful man, Edgar, was his second cousin, and was passing for white. If we talked about this, he was so powerful he could have us all killed. I grew up terrified about all this.”
But later as an educator and researcher she unearthed enough information by digging through altered court records, oral interviews with both white and black Hoovers and the help of licensed genealogists to substantiate the rumors she had heard as a child that Hoover was a relative. “Because of Edgar’s anti-black history, I am not proud of this lineage but history must be based on truth,” she said.
Author Anthony Summers, in his 1993 book Official and Confidential, said that he found that in some black communities in the East, it was generally believed Edgar had black roots and was even referred to as a “soul brother.” Writer Gore Vidal, who grew up in Washington, D.C. in the 1930s also said in an interview: “It was always said in my family and around the city that Hoover was mulatto. And that he came from a family that passed.”

John Edgar Hoover, better known as J. Edgar Hoover was born in the capital of the United States, Washington D.C. to Ivery Hoover and Annie Marie Hoover. J. Edgar was born out of a love affair between Annie Marie and her husband's Mulatto cousin, Ivery Hoover. Annie Marie, who I believe was a Mulatto of African American and German European origin, lived as a White Woman. She was married to Dickerson Naylor Hoover, an Octoroon (the Child of a European parent and a Quadroon parent). Dickerson N. Hoover was the son of John T. Hoover, a Quadroon who was the son of William Hoover, a German American and Elizabeth Allen, a Mulatto woman of English European and African American ancestry. Ivery Hoover is the son of Christian Kitt Hoover, an American White man of German and English European ancestry (who is also William's nephew) and Emily Allen, a Quadroon slave woman. Christian and Emily were half siblings. They shared the same father Christian Hoover, Sr. Christian Sr was a European American of German origin. Ivery Hoover was the son/nephew of Christian Kitt and Emily. Ivery was also the paternal and maternal grandson of Christian Hoover, Sr. In addition, Emily Allen's mother was Elizabeth Allen. Emily had her first child with Christian Kitt was given the surname Hoover was because he had the same birthday as his master/Grandfather Christian Sr, which is November 24th. After Elizabeth had fallen in love with Christian Sr's brother William and had his son John T, she abandoned her daughter Emily and left with William. William Hoover and Elizabeth Allen migrated to the Maryland/Washington D.C. area where they married and had six more children (totaling to seven children) and Elizabeth passed for White. Emily Allen had her second child with another White male Slaveowner named Eff McComb (the town of McComb, Mississippi was named after him). She then continued to have children with Christian Kitt's brother William (II) and had six more children with him. Ivery lived in a African American neighborhood after he was freed and was married to a Mulatto woman and had one child with her and named their daughter Mazola. Ivery cheated on his wife with his cousin Dickerson's wife Annie Marie. According to Millie McGhee-Morris, J. Edgar Hoover was an "outside child", meaning J. Edgar was illegitimate. When Millie continued to do her research on her third cousin J. Edgar, she discovered that Dickerson hated J. Edgar because he knew that J wasn't his son. J. Edgar later found out that he wasn't Dickerson's son and that he was Mulatto. When he was in school J. Edgar wrote a book titled "If I had a Son" which was basically a reference to his own childhood and the abuse he faced at the hands of Dickerson. J even stated in his book that he would never lie to his child. Lastly, J. Edgar Hoover was not the only Mulatto who hid his African heritage and passed for White and was an anti Black bigot.

I apologize for some of the inaccuracies I've said in my statement. Elizabeth Allen was the the daughter of Christian Hoover, Sr. Christian Hoover, Sr was a US born White man of German European origin. Elizabeth's mother was an enslaved Black woman from Africa. I believe Elizabeth's mom was previously owned by a White man of English European origin and that his surname was Allen.

The insinuation or suggestion being that a person(s) who keep getting forcibly removed from a country or land must be in this same repeated position over and over again for some sort of reason. As J. Edgar grew older in years, his skin drew darker and his African heritage physical characteristics became more pronounced, causing more people to question his family background and also his anti-black policies and discriminations.
Similar to his obsession with modifying and hiding his family heritage, he was also a life long closeted gay man who also persecuted and discriminated against gay people in higher positions in government and society and would sometimes blackmail them. The Mafia had photographic and other evidence of his gay lifestyle and used it against J. Edgar, so that he would leave them alone for the most part and not prosecute the Big Fish in the Organization. This allowed them to operate and expand their operations and influence for decades undisturbed. Any attempts by the government or the Justice Dept. to investigate or inquire about Mafia operations, was quickly and quietly terminated by Hoover while he was at the helm of the FBI. Myer Lansky often bragged about "having Hoover in my back pocket" , which was often heard on surveillance tapes, and that their operations had nothing to worry about.
Lansky also hosted Hoover for free at Mob-owned hotels, resorts, restaurants and race-tracks.
