In 2013 my wife Joline and I returned to Germany for a visit. We went to my old kaserne in Babenhausen but it was closed and fenced off while the German government decided on what to do with the facility. As we approached the now-closed main gate, a German guard and his dog came out on the other side of the fence to meet us. He spoke no English and my German was poor at best but he did manage to indicate that it was closed. I indicated that I was a former American soldier who had lived there many years ago and he managed to say that he was a former East German border guard...and pointed to his shoulder, indicating that he had been a former officer.
