The only real asshole here is the grandma, she needs to back off. The stepdad and mom need to let him decide what he wants to do, he's 18, an adult, and it's his decision on who to have a relationship with.
What did the mom expect? Her kid is in college and has a life of their own. He’s an adult who’s out of the house. Why would he sign up for play dates and stuff when he’s an adult who has a right to be one? He’s gonna work, date, hang out with friends, and have adult responsibilities. Being polite and cordial is more than enough given the circumstances.
