This song is one of the most difficult songs to sing and made Dimash a mega-star overnight in 2017 (The Singer).
The song comes from the famous Canadian-French rock opera 'Starmania' (1978) and is known in the English-speaking world as Tycoon (1995). Music: Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon (French original text). The English adaptation is by Tim Rice.
That's how it all started: In 2017 Dimash received a wildcard for the “The Singer” competition in China. He was the youngest participant ever (22 years old). Foreign participants were actually forbidden at that time. The director ignored the ban, believing Dimash would only stay 1 or 2 episodes and then go home.
The competition is not a talent show. Only professional, award-winning singers participate. Nobody knew or heard Dimash before and he had to start first ... and after his first song "SOS" Dimash captured the hearts of over 600 million viewers and a mega-star was born overnight. The next day bodyguards were at his door and now he is a superstar but without airs... just our Dimash.
The competition consisted of 14 rounds over 4 months. The jury consisted of 500 spectators who knew music, not just your average "Joe". They were well screened to be sure they would be able to judge the musicians fairly and competently. With up to 1 billion people watching this TV program and international interest was aroused. The performances were uploaded to TH-cam ... and so we became Dimash's Dears.
The Chinese organizers planned... but Dimash came, sang and stayed ... for the next 3 years in China ... but he only finished second in the competition because he is not Chinese (conditions have changed: 2018, Jessie J. Won).

Dimash, THE greatest vocalist of ALL time, this was 2017, you should hear him today, his lower registers are to die for as he’s got older! The morning after this performance was aired on this show for already famous professional singers Dimash needed bodyguards! Dimash is from Kazakhstan, here he’s 22. He was invited to perform as a wildcard, when a Chinese singer had to drop out at the last minute. His performance was downloaded 600 million times in China.
Today, he has millions of fans from all over the world and regularly plays solo concerts to audiences of over 35,000 people. He won’t sign a contract with the West as he wants to be in control of his own music. He’s a brilliant multi-instrumentalist and a fantastic composer and is currently in his final year studying for his Doctorate in Musicology, already having two university degrees in Classical and Contemporary Vocals and a Masters degree in Composition for which he received a perfect score.

This is his first song in this 13 week professional Chinese singing competition. It was Dimash's break out performance with a huge audience beyond the concert stage and it really set up his career. Dimash is from Kazakhstan, the biggest and northernmost -stan. He had been training with professional classical instructors 17 years as of this performance.
You may want to try Sinful Passion (Greshnaya Strast) in 2018 at Sochi, Russia, in the New Wave Hall. It is in Russian, so turn on captions to get English subtitles. He is fluent in Russian and it just sounds better with him being really comfortable in the language of the song. The backup band is killer and wrote the song in 1998, so their support is flawless. It's a Russian jazz/pop romantic song.

I agree with your presentation on the translation problems. I have felt that way since 2019 when I started watching this young man who is now 29. He has now sung in a total of 15 languages. Three he knows very well and the other 12 were performed phonetically as best he could. He is always quite worried about not pronouncing foreign languages perfectly, but we could care less. we are there for the joy of experiencing the sounds coming out of his gorgeous mouth.
He is a phenomenal phenomenon. That’s all there is to it. Wait to you hear your next dozen or so songs. If you hang in there, we will call you a “dear”. I also agree with your philosophy on how you react, and how often you pause and pontificate on what you’re hearing or seeing It’s your channel. Do with it what you will. 🎉😊

Once I look up the lyrics, I can get the essence of the song. The exact words don't matter as much as the feelings the words represent. I think your translation was quite different, and not as beautiful as the one I saw. But, when you understand the song better, you will probably love it even more. ❤😊⚘️
This was DIMASH's first performance in this contest and no one from China was prepared for what they heard. Over 600 million Chinese shut down their internet trying to find out about him. The following day he was a super star in China and needed bodyguards everywhere he went. Everyone seemed to know who he was. The rest is histroy, he is even better now than this performnce, has many millions of fans world wide and sell-out concerts also.

Dimash is a 29-years old singer from Kazakhstan and believe me, you’ve seen nothing at all. In my opinion you have discovered the best singer in the world. He has perfect pitch and currently has a vocal range of 6 octaves. Not in one song (mostly anyway😅). However, if you include the notes he has sung live in his concerts so far, you get almost 8 octaves (7.7 from vocal fry C1 (B0) to the whistle register D8; this note is no longer on the piano). At least that's what he's shown us so far. And that in all registers.
His voice is the result not only of his God-given talent, but also of his almost 25 years of hard daily training. From the age of 5 he attended music school in his hometown of Aktobe. He plays several instruments like piano, dombra (a kazach instrument), drums, marimba and more. He has classical as well as contemporary vocal training and sings in different genres from opera to pop, jazz, Kazakh folk, ballads and he even raps a bit. And often he skillfully mixes several genres in one song. Mainly classic and pop, so he created a new crossover genre. And meanwhile in more than 10 languages. The latest songs (from Tokyo Jazz Festival in November 2021) are Ikanaide in Japanese and at his concert in Almaty on September 23, 2022 he sang a new song in Spanish (about 7 languages in one concert!). And at his concert in Yerevan on April 29, 2023, he sang an Armenian folk song for the first time (it has to be about 15 or 16 languages so far).
He sings no mainstream and is a completely independent artist. He is managed by his father Kanat, who founded his own company "DimashAli Creative Center". The logo can be seen at the beginning of many of Dimash's videos. Maybe that’s the reason you never heard of him yet. He doesn’t sell his soul to a music label. He doesn’t want to be dictated by money when he has to sing what, when, where and how.
Many of my favorite songs are in his native tongue. He is a nice, intelligent, respectful and humble person. Sometimes he also can be a little bit goofy, and I love it❤️. He respects people regardless of their original, religion or profession. He truly loves his homeland Kazakhstan and his people with all his heart and always shows it with pride in many of his songs, concerts and interviews. During his concerts in Dubai, Düsseldorf and Prague in 2022, before he performed his song War And Peace, he told the audience he loves all people in every country. And there are no bad nations (only bad leaders). And I absolutely believe this.
His concert in September 23, 2022 was in Almaty, Kazakhstan was so amazing and it lasts almost 4 hours. Believe it or not but he really gets better and better. Every time you think you know him and his art, you realize you are so wrong.
He's very spiritual and thankful for the gift God has given him. But he also works very hard to constantly improve his vocal skills.
He said in an interview that he trains at least 3 hours every day, if necessary, it can be 10 hours to prepare for a concert. He loves swimming and also a lot under water. Maybe that's why he has this large lung capacity to hold the notes as long as he does. He's a singer you can't put in any box. He sings almost every genre there is. Every time you watch a video, expect the unexpected. Even the covers he sings he makes his own and brings elements into the song that you would never expect. Don't be surprised if you get suggestions for songs you may have already seen. Dimash has different versions of many of the same songs. They are all worth seeing. Opera2 was the second performance of The Singer competition in 2017 in China. The song is in Russian. A language he also speaks fluently. The original was from the famous Russian singer named Vitas.

Only one interpreter came along and that at the age of 22. He was almost a kid to me then (my son is 20 so I can imagine…). And after that performance he saw his dad. So beautiful and emotional.
BTW the audience is also the jury.
During the Opera 2 performance, he flirted with the audience in a way that wasn’t really his habit at the time (fortunately that has changed in the meantime). And afterwards he said that he was really uncomfortable that his father saw him like that🤭. Luckily he didn’t find out until afterwards because I love it when he’s like that on stage🥰.
I love this video because he still seemed so innocent. Just a boy and he didn't seem as serious as he sometimes is these days. He still looked carefree. I think what's happening today in the world worries him a lot.

Thank you for all the information. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to learn of the story of the character in Starmania who sang SOS. I read the Wikipedia article on it and it gives an overview of the story line of the play, but no explanation of why the character had the feelings portrayed in the song. I also found a video of the play online, but that song was blocked for some reason. When people ask me the story behind the song, I can tell them about Dimash's reasons for singing it, and about gregory lemarchal and why it was the perfect song for him. But i can never tell them about the original character's motivation. If you know, I'd appreciate whatever information you can share.
@@RbL2199 I'm sorry that I can't help you properly. I faced the same problem some time ago. I wanted to know what this musical is about to find out exactly what this song means. I've been scouring the internet like crazy even asking other dears if anyone knows more. Unfortunately we only found general information. What I once read was that the character who sings this song ends with "Sleep child, sleep" was crying for his girlfriend who is lying dead in front of him after a suicide. When you hear the original song by Daniel Balavoine, the interpretation is very different from how Dimash sings it.
What I did find, however, was an excerpt from this 1989 musical starring Norman Groulx. Maybe this can help you. I also find this version incredibly emotional.

Try Stranger next. It is English and epic. But anything the ‘dears’ suggest will be amazing. His concerts are three and a half hours long consisting of Dimash singing styles from opera to rap. He dances, plays instruments, chats and jokes with the audience, gets them all to sing with him. He is charismatic and dynamic on stage, very humble, respectful, kind, loving, intellectual, hardworking, patriotic, and humanitarian off stage, I’ve been to three overseas concerts of Dimash, so far and I’m 78 from U.K. worth every penny for the fantastic experience. Glad you are spreading the word.

@@SephPlays no, this show was almost two years earlier. There was a video on TH-cam: Sinful Passion, Dimash the best voice in the world. I was like "umh, probably not" 😂 I'm glad I watched it. I stayed up all night listening again and again, thinking "he's an alien".
Apart from his art, he is the most kind, genuine and humble person. That's why his Dears are so protective about him, so don't mind some of the comments. Hundreds of different cultures. I'm so glad I had the chance to know him. See you on the next one.
