Wow excellent concise video on incorporating real roasted pumpkin into your beer. I wish this video was out about two months ago when I was researching my own pumpkin beer. Thank you for this!
I always drink a pumpkin beer (or two), this time of year. I don't crave them, like some people do, but I love the seasonal character of them. That one looks great Martin. Cheers 🍻
I recently bottled a pumpkin ale; don't know how it turned out yet it's bottle conditioning. But, one suggestion I would say is if you are using fresh pumpkin to to strain between your brew kettle and your primary fermenter. I used 5 lbs of fresh pumpkin that I chunked and roasted a bit (40 mins) and then put into the mash. After removing the pumpkin and grains, I still had a good amount of pumpkin sludge bits at the bottom of my wort (Brewer's Edge mash and boil system). I poured it through my hop filter to filter out those stringy sludgy pumpkin remains as it went into my fermenter. Probably don't need to do that if you are just using pumpkin puree.
Love it! Keep up the good work my man! I do a similar recipe but I add a SMIDGE of clove and some chocolate malt, giving it a pumping spice latte taste.
Hey, Martin! I've brewed my last Pumpkin Ale for the Halloween of 2019 and it came out AMAZING! I mashed the pumpkin and threw it in the mash, so all the sugars could be converted and I had a drier beer in the end. I have also used some allspice along with the nutmeg, clover and cinnamon, since all the flavors of the spices would complement each other nicely (allspice and clover belong to the same family, they get along really well)! The final gravity was 1.008, which was great since I live in a tropical country and a 'lighter' beer is way more pleasant to be enjoyed here this time of the year (OG was 1.058). Really happy to see another brewer using the pumpkin in the mash: I never liked the sweet flavor of the traditional Pumpkin Ales. 😁 Cheers from Brazil! 🍻
100% agree. Made so many experimental pumpkin spice like beers that just tasted horrible. Pumpkin beers in general have been the hardest for me to master. That's also saying a lot with how hard lagers and sours are but by far I think pumpkin and spiced saison is harder.
@@TheHomebrewChallenge I manage a small homebrewing supply shop in Santa Barbara. If you are interested in further pursuing your All Grain vs. Extract kit studies, I have a couple of kits I designed that might be fun for you to test. Maybe a German Alt or an English Brown?
I've seen some use 1/2 lb lactose. Maybe that's where your remembering the sweetness Martin. I like you, am not a fan of Pumpkin beers but yours sounds interesting. Good job.
Hello Martin, one little tip. Instead of Red Kuri squash breed, try using Butternut squash/pumpkin. It gives the beer nice pumpkin taste with some addition of roasted chestnut. I tried both and honestly, beer made with Red Kuri was really underwhelming and almost bland when compared to the one made with Butternut squash.
Hallo! Great recepise for this days. But i still miss your greeting "Hallo Im Martin and this is my Homebrew Challenge" :)) very much miss. And i have one Challenge for you! Try make czech premium lager with right method - two step decoction and using only pilsner (and a litle of munich) malt. I can help with that ;)
One of the pieces of the recipe for succes for this show is: that opening music. Because I am not impressed by the beer recipes. I would write them differently.
@@Vykk_Draygo if you put too many specialty malts and too many spices... you will no longer taste the pumpkin. Got it now? Recipes should be simpler, not more complicated.
@@Vykk_Draygo I would have made it with Pilsner malt and a lot of toasted pumpkin. The color and aroma would have been from the pumpkin. And a lager yeast. 🙄
@@TheAlchemistsBrewery I would say it depends on the beer, but I at least understand the criticism now, yes.👍 Typically, "pumpkin" flavored beverages have little or no actual pumpkin flavor, it's really just the spice. So I think that was the idea here, rather than showcasing the pumpkin, it's a pumpkin spice, or pumpkin pie ale. With that idea, adding in toasty malt flavors to emulate a pie crust makes sense. I do think a 100% pilsner recipe, with loads of pumpkin (in the mash, and in secondary) would make for an interesting beer!
Pumpkin, done correctly, is by far one of my favorites.
Hi Martin I am a home brewer from Taiwan. I really like your channel and learn a lot here. Thanks for your sharing.

The last time I used Pumpkin it turned into an Imperial and took a year to mellow.
Next year I'm going fresh pumpkin! Great looking beer!

Ooh sounds good!
Very interesting...I think I would want to try that in fermentation, but cool stuff
Yes would be curious what difference putting the pumpkin in the fermenter would make.
can you do a cherry porter or cherry stout recipe please
Eu fuz uma pumpkin ale... Portugal Aveiro
I usually don’t want a pumpkin beer, but this one looks and sounds amazing! I’ll have to give it a try.
Hey Martin fantastic video. have you ever done a video on the different strains of yeast?
Thanks. Not really talked about more than one yeast in a video.
Very interesting watch! Never looked into this before so learned a lot here!
Thanks.
Appreciate the work on this video. I’ve never done one before but considered doing it this fall. I think I might give this recipe a try. Sláinte
Thanks!

Definitely a fan of the drier beer so avoid the sweetness. 1.008 is even lower than I got, nice.
Great vids. Watch them all :). Could you please tell me which spray head you are using on the kettle lid? I would like to use it on my Foundry

I did brew pumpkin ale like 3 weeks ago. Same Color! :) I love the spices but I think I've added to much Cinnamon hehe
I’ve always said the best pumpkin beer is the one you make, you can tweak the spice level so it’s not over powering. This looked like a great recipe!
Well put. I apply that to all my brews.
Yes definitely easy to overdo it spice wise with this.

It would be real neat to see an extract batch that used pumpkin puree. Do a little A B testing, for science.
Yes perhaps ABS will offer that for the extract version of this recipe.
Never thought pumpkin would be good in a beer.
Neither did I, and it often isn't. I've tried a few good ones though
Surprised me too.
Definitely not all created equal. I enjoy some. Some are not drinkable, IMO.
Just in time for Halloween
🎃
Did you have any of this left for Thanksgiving? Cheers!

Good point. Yeah don’t think I’d enjoy lactose in this.
Well done. Mine is almost gone lol

Nice tip- what weight of butternut squash would you recommend?

Is your mate wearing Leeds United shirt?
Yes indeed. Southampton played Leeds the day we did the tasting.
Just noticed the Leeds United logo. Go, Leeds!
Zero views, I can't believe I was the first, yay!!
Must admit as nice as the beer looks, definitely not a pumpkin fan! Too strong of a flavour I find!
Lol yeah I feel that way about most of them.
So I tried this, the pumpkin imparted no flavor whatsoever 😂 😡. Just sticking to the spices next time…
You lost a lot of the sugar when you carved out the brains. I would have boiled it all and then picked out the seeds.
One of the pieces of the recipe for succes for this show is: that opening music. Because I am not impressed by the beer recipes. I would write them differently.
"I would write them differently." How very insightful. 🙄
