The ones made to look like a pile of stones represent a “cairn”, old burials often used cairns to keep wildlife from digging up graves. The “mop” is actually a torch pointing down, an old symbol of death.🖤🇨🇦

When a headstone says the person "sleeps" it means they are at rest while awaiting the resurrection with the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is disrespectful to say "I hope they weren't burried alive," and other such comments.
What a ridiculous comment about being buried alive. Did you really think they'd bury a person alive and put it on their headstone??Just because you say you're respectful doesn't mean that you are. I thought I found an interesting and educational experience in your videos. Boy, was I wrong.

Nice video. I love cemeteries also. But you need to Learn more about the different types of Headstones and Symbols. You are assuming what 'You think' they look like to you... is the truth. If you are going to narrating a video, it needs to be accurate Information. Thanks.
I watch alot of these videos with others like Faces of the Forgotton, and you really do give a awesome presentation, but I think you need to spend just a little time with the ones you stop at and try to read whatever is there, like the Lewis and Clark site, it would of been awesome for you to read what was the side of that huge stone, that beautiful white marble it looked to be, just beautiful.....you are great with the little inserts you write, gives a laugh....keep up the good...and keep going to these beautiful places.
My all time favorite page. Faces of the Forgotten. I love that he takes time to look up history of some forgotten souls and can tell us a story of their life. Great videos he puts out every week... I love history and love seeing cemeteries and gravestones etc
Thank you for the nice words. Glad you enjoyed the video. This cemetery is very large and I apologize that we did not have enough time to read all the headstones.
If you're near Fall River, Massachusetts, visit Oak Grove cemetery. It has the graves of Lizzie Borden, as well as her father and stepmother. It's located near the main entrance. Can't miss it, as it has a towering family monument on the site.
You ought to be more respectful of those people who were loved by their families. Try not to be so flippant. You probably don’t mean to be but that is not haw it comes across.
The weepiing angels are stunning! I don't think I've ever seen those before. I wish the cemetary would restore and keep the monuments up, but I expect that cost falls to the famiily and not everyone there has family that want to pay to restore an old grave of some relatives they never knew. Such a shame - they deserve to be preserved.
This is first one of your videos. Can you please read the Last name of the person stone. Some of us would love find our lose family. Thanks for your time. Lisa
Hi and thanks for watching. We did read some of the names but there are way too many to read them all. Some of the headstones we videoed so you could read them. If you are looking for someone specific in this cemetery, you can go to their website or findagrave.com and search for the name you are looking for. I hope this helps.
The Bellefontaine Cemetery is not pronounced "Fountain". It is "Belle-FON-TAINE". You made such a big deal out of mispronouncing it, I just had to correct you.
@JaggedThings Respectfully, they are not the same. The Bison is native to North America and the Buffalo is native to Africa. We call them Buffalo but we are incorrectly doing so in the US
If you want to do a road trip. Come to Chicago. Graceland Cemetery is beautiful and had a lot of historical figures. There are also quite a few graves that have interesting stories attached. I love Graceland, it's all that and more!
All cemeteries should be cared for. A person's final resting place. At least that is what one thinks .The law needs to protect those who can no longer protect themselvesn
I agree with you. So many are being neglected or filled over for new construction. It's horrible how many headstones end up dumped in rivers. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment.
In traditional statue symbolism...angels and saints often are shown with bare feet because of an old belief that demons could never fully appear as a human and would have hooves rather than feet.
A simple trick to reading tombstones that are not legible is to rub all purpos flour over the area. Doesn't hurt anything and the rain will wash it away.
When we go back, I will certainly try to read more of the stones. It is a big place and we will be going back soon. Thanks for commenting and for watching
Is there a reason why you blurred out the headstone wording on the downcast angel standing on her tiptoes that you described as making you want to cry? I see you rarely focus long on the sentiments (unfortunately) but am really curious on this specific one
The Schlossstein is a family name, and is originally from the middle Europe as an ex Germany. Schloss means Castle Stein means stone, put together make 3 SSS.
Can you just imagine how beautiful and expensive some of these gravestones and statues were back when they lived ??? The cost must have been so very expensive... And then compare that money into todays day ...gosh. just simple gravemarkers are expensive now...!!!
The symbol at 11:51 is chi-rho christos coming from ancient Greek when Emperor Constantine was ruling between 306-337. I like the graves I just want to help you.
The "mop" is actually a torch that she is extinguishing, meaning her time has ended. The symbol on the celtic cross at 11:51, is for the Lutheran church. The children's grave is for John and Julia Sarpy. He is in an invalid chair and she in a crib. The mother was the daughter of one of the founders of St. Louis The fathers name was John L. Sarpy.
I am from Germany, they are beautiful gravestones, real art. Sorry, my English is not good. I don't know the culture in the USA but I am allowed to talk loudly and laugh and tell stupid jokes. In Germany it is forbidden. The lady must learn to have respect for the deceased. Wow really cool cemetery lots of amazing monuments and mausoleums. Just found your channel. I also video cemeteries and graveyards in Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks, glad you found us. Ireland? I want to go there. You have much cooler looking graveyards and old abandoned buildings. I am jealous. I am coming over to see your channel. 😊
@@JaggedThings hi jagged thank you for watching my videos and I hope to see you in Ireland one day 🇮🇪🇮🇪
I think that was a torch instead of a mop. I've seen another statue similar to that with an extinguished torch but can't remember where.
Thanks for the information
Have you covered grave shelters/houses/sheds? I'm looking for a playlist and Findagrave virtual cemetery. Have you heard of the Association of Gravestone Studies? We used to be members. They can tell you what each of the symbols carved into the tombstones mean.
No I haven't, but I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion!
Nice video.
I love cemeteries also.
But you need to Learn more about the different types of Headstones and Symbols.
You are assuming what 'You think' they
look like to you... is the truth.
If you are going to narrating a video, it needs to be accurate
Information. Thanks.
Google😂
If you use thin paper lay on the writing and then use charcoal pencil on the paper often you can make it out.
That's great advice. We will have to give that a try. Thanks! See ya at the next video. Stay jagged, my friend😊
I do some genealogy and this is the technique they use.
@@JaggedThings Use spray shaving foam to keep the shape.
Gen William T Sherman and his family is buried there in St Louis
I love his videos too
Thank you for the nice words.
That would be great! Hoping to get there one day and look it up. Thanks for the information.
You ought to be more respectful of those people who were loved by their families. Try not to be so flippant. You probably don’t mean to be but that is not haw it comes across.
Sorry you took it wrong. I love cemeteries especially old ones. Thanks for watching
The weepiing angels are stunning! I don't think I've ever seen those before. I wish the cemetary would restore and keep the monuments up, but I expect that cost falls to the famiily and not everyone there has family that want to pay to restore an old grave of some relatives they never knew. Such a shame - they deserve to be preserved.
the grave with the eyeball on the stone indicates membership in the masons.
Thanks for the info!
Amazing cemetries. Love the weeping angels.
They're my favorite too
This is first one of your videos.
What a lovely cemetary. And the birds chTting
Glad you enjoyed it
The Bellefontaine Cemetery is not pronounced "Fountain". It is "Belle-FON-TAINE". You made such a big deal out of mispronouncing it, I just had to correct you.
The one with the hooded robe that you said was blacked out, you could see a face as you moved the camera back. Creepy!
Okay, that is creepy!
Moe so as the first thing you notice about face as you pull away is the eyes.
It represents death
That was made by artist that made the design of the $20 his place was in New Hampshire
Hola- I don't mean to pick the fly crap out of the pepper but its an American Bison not Buffalo. Good video thanks
Since Bison and Buffalo are the same, I guess we are both right. Thanks for watching
@JaggedThings Respectfully, they are not the same. The Bison is native to North America and the Buffalo is native to Africa. We call them Buffalo but we are incorrectly doing so in the US
Not a mop but a torch....her flame has gone out.
That's sad
It is sad, but back then it was sign of respect to have a life so bright.
If you want to do a road trip. Come to Chicago. Graceland Cemetery is beautiful and had a lot of historical figures. There are also quite a few graves that have interesting stories attached.
I love Graceland, it's all that and more!
We plan on making a trip soon to Chicago, again. Thanks for the information on the Graceland Cemetery. We will check it out
They are gorgeous and should be taken care of. Had to be wealthy to have those
All cemeteries should be cared for. A person's final resting place. At least that is what one thinks .The law needs to protect those who can no longer protect themselvesn
I agree with you. So many are being neglected or filled over for new construction. It's horrible how many headstones end up dumped in rivers. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment.
The curved stone grave toppers have nothing to do with grave robbers. It indicates that that person was buried in a vault.
Thanks for the information
The PX symbol is a Catholic symbol for Christ. You see it in many Catholic churches.
12:06 is St Mary Magdalene
23:44 might be the virgin Mary with Jesus and St John the Baptist as children at her knee. That was a popular holy card in the 19th century
In traditional statue symbolism...angels and saints often are shown with bare feet because of an old belief that demons could never fully appear as a human and would have hooves rather than feet.
Thanks for all the information. I found it very interesting.
@@unacceptablesisterpeter3431 This one was so beautiful and sad. It always make me emotional when I watch this part.
My granddaughter and I love going to cemeteries, we try to find the oldest and youngest. We have a lot of fun
Glad to hear someone else loves cemeteries too! Thanks for sharing and watching
Thank you so much for sharing
The sites you show are truly unique .

That big angel is beautiful!! Nice cemetery.
I think it is beautiful too. Thanks for watching
A simple trick to reading tombstones that are not legible is to rub all purpos flour over the area. Doesn't hurt anything and the rain will wash it away.
Thanks for the info!
Preservationist only use D2 so as to cause no permanent damage to the stone
The lady is not holding a "mop"; it is a lowered torch, symbolizing extinguished life.
Thanks for the info
Loved your commentary!
Thank you for the compliment. We make these videos for nice viewers like you 😊
awesome walk around 🙏💫🕊️
Thank you for sharing. I like to pay a visit to those who will not come back.
Rest In Peace . ❤
Enjoyed the tour and loved your commentary ha
Thank you, glad you like it. I have my own way of thinking 😄
New subscriber here! From up north in ohio
Neat place...I just wish you would read more of the stones...
Thanks that was very interesting and informational
Graveyard = "Hallowed" ground for that denomination. Cemetery = burial spot for anyone.
Can you just imagine how beautiful and expensive some of these gravestones and statues were back when they lived ??? The cost must have been so very expensive...
And then compare that money into todays day ...gosh. just simple gravemarkers are expensive now...!!!
I agree. The artistry and mastery of their craft is awe inspiring!
I think the statue with the mop signifies the mopping up of the tears shed for her.
I don't know if that's a fact, but I think it is a beautiful thought. Thanks for sharing
The symbol at 11:51 is chi-rho christos coming from ancient Greek when Emperor Constantine was ruling between 306-337. I like the graves I just want to help you.
Thanks for the informaiton
You're welcome! I thought it was Nordic by but feeling but also i had make sure it was from the right country and era,and good luck ghost hunting.
You should come to El Paso, Texas, and do a segment on Concordia Cemetary. A lot of the graves were removed to make the 1-10 freeway.
We have John Wesley Jardin resting here.

That's interesting. We may get down that way one day
My guess is that the "mop" is a torch that is lowered to symbolize her light has gone out. Cool channel content 👍
Thanks for the compliment and the information
I love cemeterys😊
Me too!
Just be careful not to bring anyone home with you.
I will certainly try
Europe has the most beautiful old cemeteries
I would love to visit Europe and see their beautiful old cemeteries.
Italy florence, ( churches) France ,Paris Pere la chaisse..
Same I love looking at all of the headstones 🪦 and I like to look at the kids grave
Me too! The kid's graves are so adorable
'Weep not, she is not dead but sleeperh' is a Bible quote. Look up Talitha, Cumi.
Sarpy.
bellefontaine Cemetery is the BEST omne in ST.LOUIS...
By far!
It's well maintained better than the other gaves yard in middle of nowhere
Yes, it is maintained well. It is in the middle of St Louis
I am from Germany, they are beautiful gravestones, real art. Sorry, my English is not good. I don't know the culture in the USA but I am allowed to talk loudly and laugh and tell stupid jokes. In Germany it is forbidden. The lady must learn to have respect for the deceased. But it is a very beautiful cemetery
Beautiful cemetery
Thanks, I agree. I love old headstones and there are plenty of them here. See ya next video. Until then, stayed jagged my friend 😊😊
Do y'all ever do rubbings?
Actually, we were told not to because it causes the wording on the headstones to wear off. I don't know if this is true but not willing to risk it.
The music in the beginning reminded me of the movie version of Flowers in the Attic
I had forgotten about that movie. You are right. Pretty creepy movie. Thanks for watching😊
@@JaggedThings Yeah it sure was lol! I read the book series too but the movie was, yeah creepy!
I really enjoyed this!
@@Equestrianmommy thanks🤗
I've seen people buried with their feet at the headstone
I've never seen that but I have heard about it. I wonder why that is
"...She is not dead but sleepeth." Quoting Jesus regarding the maid he raised from the dead. Luke 8:52
Thanks for the info
The Bible says we don't die we sleep until second coming
🧡🧡
After one second your new life starts.
the long stone over the grave is called a wolfstone. it's to protect from wild animals digging.
Thanks for the info!
The monument, of the lady with a 'mop.' To me, it reminded me of a large paint brush. Maybe she was an artist.
I enjoy the forgotten cemetery's
Me too! Thanks for watching 😊
At -- 2:28 -- it would be fun to stick accupple of plastic skeleton hands in the ground like she's popping up from her grave.😉
At--7:47-- They found their names in the book of LIFE, and will be in heaven.
