I've always been fascinated by water graphics from oldies like Keen Dreams, Super Mario and Metal Gear. Now water in games like GTA, Nautica and HFW to name a few will always be amazing to me

Horizons water was breath taking. The underwater levels and side quests were some of the most amazing adventures in the game.
It’s addition to this franchise was I’m sure no small feat. Especially cause Horizon is known for being a beautifully rendered world. If water was going to be done… it wasn’t going to be half assed… and it wasn’t. I hope we see more of this in future releases… as well as it’s addition to Horizon Call of the mountain for psvr2. They’ve shown they can take us there… so take us there in VR Guerilla!

Assassin's Creed IV was great it's what Horizon Forbidden West reminds me of when you are at the Coast. I hope Naval Combat is added one day, just imagine the effects will be like during a fight with Machines like the swamp lands but better😭 Waiting for DLC is Painful when ideas like these come into your idea for your favourite games.

An effect you didn't mention is clothes getting wet, getting darker when wet, and water dripping off the character when they emerge from water, possibly even leaving wet footprints. As someone who has played video games for over 40 years I really appreciate these touches of realism even if they don't directly affect gameplay.

Notable calming waters no one mentions: Watch Dogs (2014), Forza Horizon 3 (2016), Just Cause 2 (2010), Jet x20 (2002), Assassins Creed Origins (2017). Im missing a bunch but cant think of them right now

The mere introduction of transparency effects was literally a game changer. Now you had water that you could see both way into and out of and not just an opaque texture you couldn't see through, so you couldn't hide in the water any more from other players.
UE was one of the first but just look at the HL2 source tech demo which showed off reflections, transparency, etc. This was simply amazing at the time to see it running in real-time without completely tanking the frame rate like previous efforts typically did.

Woah, how did you do 20 minutes of water effects and only say half a sentence about subnautica?? It's still the best example of underwater movement, deep sea lighting, and below surface refraction! Not to mention the bioluminescent effects, interweaving biomes, and dynamic color palette! It does have significant performance issues, but despite that it's still the most IMMERSIVE underwater setting to date.

Heretic from 1994 was one of the early first person shooters to have water physics like splashes and the first game on the id tech 1 engine to have water physics since Doom didn’t have splashes and Heretic uses the same engine as Doom.

The first time I remember seeing realistic water effects was Riven, the sequel to Myst. It was WAY more primitive than most of the tech on display here, but it was still quite good, especially for 1997.

  • @shadowflar3

While I have to salute the effort, this is littered with technical inaccuraties, most blatant of which is Half-Life 1 material during normal mapping topic. It is painfully obvious you can't distinguish between the dozen techniques used to build the graphics, but I don't blame you. This is wildly nonlinear history where many developers have done more for less by using clever hacks instead of relying on one certain technique as is. But we're approaching a point where reflection, refraction and volumetric effects could all be soon rendered accurately using raytracing/path tracing and its exciting to see where future titles might take us.
