    Thanks for watching this vid!

0:00 Why I Made This Video
    0:56 Isolation Blues - A Short Animation
    2:36 Disclaimer
    3:00 Step 1: Forgive Yourself
3:58 Step 2: Declutter Your Head
    5:19 Step 3: Give Yourself a Reason
7:01 Step 4: Lower The Barrier to Entry
8:11 Step 5: Act First Get Motivated Later
    9:14 Final Thoughts
Actionable Steps if you need them:
Write down every thought you’re having. If you can’t write or if you don’t like to write, you can use the voice recorder on your phone. The idea is to get your thoughts on paper in front of you.
When you make a to-do list, write your item like this:
    • Heading
    • I am doing this because: (here you write a strong reason(s) why this task will help you). Try and find something that’s outside yourself that taps into your excitement. You can also use a negative reason like “I wanna stick it to that guy who called me a loser when I was 14”
    • Then, write a list of easily actionable next steps.
The 70% Rule: Start when your conditions are 70% good, not perfect. When you think about the final result, be comfortable with hitting 70% of the perfect result in your head.
“Act first” in order to get motivated later. In the video I mention actions relating to your project, e.g. having your writing program open and the wifi off to write, but this also extend to any kind of action, even if it’s just going for a walk. The key is to understand that you have to start BEFORE you get motivated.
Finally: It’s okay if this video didn’t motivate you, but I really hope you at least try get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper. I’ve never known that technique not to help :)
Looooong pinned comment, but these are legitimately the things I do that help me get motivated, so I want to make sure they’re understood by everyone.
    Cool!
    Cam xoxo
P.S. Let me know if you want more of these types of vids, and about what topics :)

I had a full blown panic attack, didn't sleep for 48 hours, was constantly trembling and my brain was in bits. I was ready to fully drop out of my course. But from watching some of your videos and talking to family and friends instead I did something I've never done before, I talked about my feelings and my headspace. A huge weight was lifted and now I've begun counselling with a rep in my college. It's crazy to think I was ready to shit on 4 and a half years of solid work because I was afraid to talk about my feelings. So big ups to you my dude you're a lifesaver and I owe you one!

    2. I am freaking living for this content. I feel like this is just some dude, sharing his experience and letting us know what might help and I love that. It doesn't feel overly produced. It doesn't feel like I'm listening to a wannabe therapist. It feels like I've asked a mate for some advice and that's exactly what I'm getting. Heck yes.
    3. The last part about getting a high off of collecting information and feeling like we are doing something... This has been my issue for years. I'll read, and watch, and listen, and research and even worry and it all feels productive. Except for the part where nothing changes in my life and my head is simply filled with more information. Need to work on that.

Well here's a little twist that I'm trying to rise above, and one that I hear about more and more. I studied interior design because I love color, art, architectural history, styles, trends etc. Eventually I started upcycling furniture, staging and selling it. I did well. Painting was my peace, a truly creative outlet until...my husband died three months ago after being palliative at home for six months. I found out that deep grieving annihilates the creative part of our brain, something I find almost impossible to rise up out of. I go into my workshop, look at my paints and walk back out. I haven't painted for six months now. After looking for answers I found this video. I think the 70% rule is where I need to start. I've been waiting to feel "perfect" to start. Now I realize I feel 70% already and that's good enough. I shall try, and also get the scribbles down on paper. I totally feel that what with all the extra tasks one must do when your spouse dies. A bazillion new duties, legalities, stressors all while managing to stay above water. Grief Brain. It's a thing. So thank you for your words. The cup "but first, crying" has been my daily routine literally. I have a cup I love that says " I need my garage time!". I'll have to dig it out. Thanks again

Even though this video is 3 years old and is in the context of a world pandemic, its really relevant to me right now with an 8 week old baby & a toddler in the middle of one of the wettest most miserable English winters ever. Im stuck in the house, surviving on 3 hours sleep, surrounded by plastic tat from Christmas that i need to tidy up, and its hard working out the logistics of getting out the house with the 2 of them then even if i manage to get myself washed and dressed at a decent time the toddler doesnt want to play ball he just wants to sit in front of the tv and eat chocolate.
Meanwhile the house gets messier and dirtier and i havent got the energy to sort it as thoroughly as id like to. Need to stop beating myself up and remember that this time is very short. Was getting very frustrated with my stuckness and prayed to God to help me feel better. And he was like dude just go watch a Struthless video it always does the trick to get a bit of forward motion going 😊 cheers man love ya ❤

Request: I'd love to see a video on how to improve at skills where you feel you've plateaued!
    Compliments:
i'm so happy you're doing more advice videos!! you make it all so much more relatable and simpler. I'm a daunting person and am not good at making it this accessible. I like that you call out and embrace the corniness. People struggle with that part!

Tough to give you ideas for topics... Usually when I scroll through all your videos I find some sage nugget that I didn't even know I needed. My bestie with a PhD in Psych loved the one you did on procrastination - your stuff is solid, well laid out and backed up with contemporary evidence- based stuff.... That's the truth...legit excellent instructional design. Why do I keep watching and use all your stuff as an example of how videos should be done? They make me feel better, give focus and actions. And I still feel like it's ok to sleep or cry on the couch 😂 So glad I found your channel and so happy this is how you get some scribbles out = positive impact on the 🌎.

I've been having a lot of trouble getting back into study over the past couple of weeks and I've gotten really behind, which of course makes it harder and harder to get started. This video really helped. I think the way you present is fantastic, not overly positive or negative but just very practical, which makes your videos motivating in and of themselves. And the actual advice helped to no end. I have ADHD and one of my biggest difficulties is with task switching, including starting new tasks and finishing partly-completed things. I've heard 70% before with regards to the quality of completed work, but never the surrounding conditions, and that's been probably the biggest help for me. I followed all your tips and I've gone from "I should" to "I want to", which feels great. So genuinely thank you for making and sharing this.

I don’t know if you look at new comments on old videos but you are the most wholesome person I’ve ever come across & I’ll come and watch you’re videos when I’m unmotivated, depressed, basically not doing good mentally. You’re my mental coach! And I cannot thank you enough for that. I know you’ve gone through plenty of obstacles that you share with the world and how you turned yourself around. You struggle just like the rest of us, and I adore that you try to help everyone who struggles as much as you do. Thank you for everything. I usually don’t comment on TH-cam videos but felt the very need to. Much love❤️

hey man just wanted to say sincere thanks for making these vids - you're a legend - not only do they make me laugh heaps but the vid you did with the advice about doing the same thing every single day got me out of my sad 3 year creative rut big time. I watched it in february and fortunately placed a large art supplies order right before I had to shut my business down completely to stay home and with all the time and materials on hand I started drawing every. @t for the last 4 weeks - I am just on a roll now and fully stoked & it's all because of that one video that re-sparked my pilot light. thanks!

With regards to the decluttering your head, writing down thoughts really is a great exercise. I've been using an assignment from a Acceptance and Committment Therapy workbook to write down all negative thoughts, hour by hour, for a week. I've come to realise how many I have, and writing them down creates a distance. The book uses the analogy that thoughts are signs on a road trying to lead you down into ditches, but often you don't even realise the signs are there. Writing them down makes them concrete and you can stop believing them.

😂 at the end I felt WAY too seen 😂 I watched this after 2 other motivation/ media detox videos... The rabbit hole is real! I keeping telling myself I don't have to keep painting because the last layer is probably still wet when in reality I've been sat here for close to an hour. That paint is dry and I know it. 😭
