Widowmaker's backstory is actually so damn sad and tragic. in her former life, Widowmaker was married to Gérard Lacroix, an Overwatch agent spearheading operations against the Talon terrorist organization. After several unsuccessful attempts to eliminate Gérard, Talon decided to change its focus to his wife, Amélie. Talon operatives kidnapped her and subjected her to an intense program of neural reconditioning. They broke her will, suppressed her personality, and reprogrammed her as a sleeper agent. She was eventually found by Overwatch agents, apparently none the worse for wear, and returned to her normal life.
Two weeks later she killed Gérard in his sleep.
Her mission complete, Amélie returned to Talon, and they completed the process of turning her into a living weapon.

Bastion's bird is named Ganymede btw, and he does indeed show up in-game! The type of bird also changes depending on what skin you use in some cases!
Also his Overgrown skin do have nest but on other shoulder and there is eggs inside

Tracer doesnt control time, she controls HER time. its a long story, but basically shes unstable in time, winston made her device to keep her anchored, and shes able to accelerate and rewind her own time at will. but only to a certain point.
Tracer seems young, because she was 16 while the war and had to be 46, but her backstory says she is now 36

Cuz the war went on for about 10 years, so the events of the cinematics are 20 years after the end of the war, but 30 after the start of the war. Making her 36.

Overwatch cinematics are so good. Props to the directing and art team
Overwatch was founded for like 30+ years but it only end service 6 years from present day in game which is why there are younger people inside it like Tracer who join in later on near the end of Overwatch
It's because she was got lost in time and Winston and mercy made the device on her chest so she can control where she moves in time and space and ages very slowly I think it's like a year is a month for her or something. Not sure if that's fully correct but to an extent it is.

I really like how you engage with media, it's clear you really pick up on the story being told rather than just watching for content and it's a lot more entertaining to see people fall in love with the story and universe like how I did when the game first came out.
overwatch's team is made of phenomenal storytellers, and it shows. combined with the famous 'blizzard polish' in their animation and outstanding voice acting, it's easy to see why their animated shorts really truly do feel like short films as opposed to, as you said, glimpses into the world. that's why the overwatch community is always fiending for new lore lol

Tracer can reverse, and accelerate her own time, not anyone else's so when she's zipping around and rewinding she's basically controlling her time. And she'll be reverted to the state she was reverted to
The machine-like entities that are in the cinematics are what are known as Omnics. Bastion, Zenyatta, Orisa, and now Ramattra are playable Omnics. The war Bastion accessed the memories of his fallen brother units is called the Omnic Crisis, where a both of Omnic, tired of being mistreated, waged war on Humanity. Overwatch was founded to be an international and independent peacekeeping organization.
I could watch the Last Bastion 500,000 TIMES. I will never tire of it.
The war started 30 years ago. Overwatch was basically like the Avengers… Jack Morrison (Soldier), Gabriel Reyes (Reaper), Ana Amari, Reinhardt Wilhelm, Torborn Lindholm, Mina Liao( Creator of omnics and Echo) were the original members. After Overwatch stopped the omnic crisis, they transitioned into an organization that improved society through peacekeeping and innovation. This is when individuals like Tracer, Winston, Genji, and Cassidy joined. Tracer looks young, because of her chronal disassociation (due to an incident with an experimental time traveling jet) The in game time between OW1 and OW2 is actually only 3-4 weeks.
I watched the first ten minutes seeing this video (me who has already watch all cinematics) But i gotta say that you are a total vibe. Even tho its old content its just a vibe you being here reacting to this. Legendary!!!

Watch the character origin stories. They do a lot to clarify the lore and they're also really cool. Also, yeah even though the game is called Overwatch it doesn't necessarily mean that all of the playable heroes are/were part of the group.

The overgrown skin for bastion has a nest with eggs in it on the shoulder and the same bird from the cinematic.
25:40 newer players probably don't know it, but Winstons is from the Horizon Lunar Colony (which used to be a map in OW1), where they were teaching apes and other animals like Hammond (or: Wrecking Ball) and researching their intelligence.
It's still a map in OW2, 2cp is now an arcade mode

I never thought about that before but it occured to me while watching his reaction. Could Alejandra be Gabriel Reyes's daughter ? Think about it, in the game Reaper mentions a wife when interacting in the game, he is also presumed dead while also being of hispanic heritage (given where the cinematic takes place). This would be the reason why her mother talks to her about Overwatch and the heroes of old. It would also explain why Soldier is keeping watch over the girl, being the only piece left of his best friend before the fallout of Overwatch. As a discreet and brotherly thing to do no matter what happened between them, Soldier protects whats left of Reyes's memory. Alejandra doesn't have a father that we know of and Overwatch's fallout being around 9 years prior would make sense to a 12ish years old pre-teen and as her mother says "Soon she'll be forced to make a choice that will determine the direction of her life" which could be interpreted as confronting her existence through the truth. If she gets closer to Overwatch and decides to pursue the truth about those heroes, chances are her father would be in stories or archives. This would bring her to a harsh choice of trying to pursue Reyes in order to bring him back to reason, which seems possible because as far gone as he is, we've seen numerous vilains turn back to the light after their loved one showed them what they've never known before : reconnaissance and love. Or she could go the same route Reyes did and try to end him before he kills more and more, it would essentially make her fall the same dark and unforgivable path that even Batman fears because "I'd never ends with one.". I'd just add, when Soldier says "Old habits die hard I guess", it's almost seems like it intends to tell that Morrison was so used to look after his loved ones and those he cared for that, even now, after going the same dark path he fought his best friend over, deep down he can't stop caring for them and even as a nihilist vigilante, Morrison, under the mask of Solider 76, still cares about something. To end my point, the last words of the mother and the shot on Soldier makes it look like he could secretly be her father but the way the mother says it doesn't feel like she would be talking about the father. But it's just a me thing on this.
Honestly I think my theory doesn't has flaws but it makes sense to me lore wise and implicit writing is common in Overwatch so this would be surprising. If anyone passes by my comment leave your opinion I'd love to hear more takes on this.
Damn. I remember playing Overwatch when it first came out and waiting/watching these Shorts was such a treat. Late 2019 is probably when I stopped playing. Watching Blizzcon online annually and anticipating for a new short and hearing news was an amazing feeling. Thanks for sharing! I'll watch part 2 soon.
i love how in the widowmaker cinematic you can hear the heartbeat go extremely fast in the end at the moment of the kill and slowly go silent showing how much she is like the spider she speaks about
and if you wonder this is probably widowmakers heartbeat as it goes extremely slow to the point its almost stopped which is what a part of her lore is
Disney, all the other production companies need to take a page out Blizzard's book because Blizzard knows how to make a really badass diverse original characters like S76 and Tracer.

I love when ppl try to learn the lore but it’s hard to watch when you realize how much more you know that they don’t get. It’s like sitting down to watch Part 3 of a franchise you love with someone who hasn’t seen the first two movies. Watching them guess is torture.

Late on this tbh but for the hanzo and genji cinematic Hanzo basically killed genji with that sword that he was sitting in front of, afterwards he felt so bad for it that he vowed never to pick up another blade

That is actually called a Ganymede. A Greek mythology and the nameskae of one of Jupiter's moons. Modeled after Tikka, the pet parrot of Blizzard artist Kimberly LeCrone. Ganymede's species is on a picture hanging in the hunting lodge in Eichenwalde.
Overwatch's amazing story is probably the main reason I will always support the game despite the mistakes blizzard makes with the game

Just a theory but I think the little girl in "hero" could possibly be reaper's or soldier's daughter? There is also some comics that tell the lore of overwatch a bit better than the cinematics and origin story shorts do. Every time I see someone react to "alive" they all think it's zenyatta getting shot but it's his brother mandatta. It's also mandatta that Ramattra is mourning in his origin story not zen.

Bastion's story's purpose is to tell the problems with PTSD and the sheer amount of help therapy animals are.
reaper, widow, sombra, moira, doomfist and i cant remember the rest but theyre all part of a counter ow called talon theyre bascially villains thats why u see them fighting against the overwatch crew. there also used to be a team called blackwatch consisting of moira, genji, cassidy and reaper they were criminals held from the public to do the dirty work for overwatch. Reaper used to be a good guy also him and soldier were friends but they ended up becoming enemies and he blew up the overwatch base, both of them were told to be dead thats why soldier keeps a low profile and doesnt go by his name jack morrison anymore. Moira also genetically modified gabriel (reaper) to be how he is today.
Tracer can only rewind her own time, it has to do with her condition you saw in her origin story

For Hanzo and Genji its more a parrell between their story ans the dragon brothers. Also that is Hanzos sword after he "killed" genji he swore to never pick up a blade again. Also Hanzo was far more skilled than Genji with a sword

Reaper was apart of overwatch but a sub-division called blackwatch (basically a military kill squad/assassination team) and both reaper and soldier 76 underwent a program to enhance they're reflexs, speed, strength and stuff like that, but reapers experiment's went bad and it was like torture for him as every atom in his body changed, and made him be able to phase (like in-game) and moira (support in-game and a bitch to play against iykyk) found him and did experiment's on him so he could control it, and decided to hate overwatch for what it did to his body with a little manipulation from moira aswell so he would fight for her doing aswell as talon im pretty sure. Correct me if im wrong which i probly am at some points.
I'll say if you want to enjoy Overwatch just watch the cinematics, origin stories, read the comics, and stuff outside of the game. I don't recommend playing it as it's a gigantic mess. As for the robot guy you saw that you thought was in the game no. He's an 'Omnic' Omnics are sentient robots in this world that have distinct personalities and are basically their own people. There are some characters in Overwatch that are Omnics but not all Omnics are Overwatch members. The Omnic you are likely thinking of being in Overwatch is Zenyatta. He's not the same as the one in the Widowmaker cinematic. That one is named Mondatta, and they both were monks of the Shambali Monastery at one point. As for Tracer's Time abilities they are related to her Origin story so I'll not entirely spoil it but once you have watched that if you still have questions we can answer without fear of spoilers. Yes Ecopoint is a subdivision of Overwatch. From what we've heard/watched I don't think any of the people in Mei's cinematic woke up before they passed. I think the tanks just malfunctioned and they died in their sleep.

Tracer is still young and can go back in time or move that fast because she had a crash plane but diddn't died...... just lost in the time. That's why her thing on her chest which is a machine that stop her to not be lost in the time again.
For your question of « Was reaper not in the Original Overwatch team » Yes he was, but the thing is that things happened between Overwatch and him and he created something called Blackwatch and took with him Moira, Cassidy, Genji and Widowmaker. After that, something happened and he had a fight between Soldier: 76 and both ended pretty bad wounded, so Moira did experiments on him and that's how he got a bit ghosty like that.
About Genji and Hanzo, no there are not dragons, but basically the legends of the dragons is kinda their story.... They are brothers but until one day, they had family problems because of Genji diddn't wanted to take the head of the clan even if he had too and that resulted at they had to fight where Hanzo « Killed » Genji (that's why he's a cyborg).
