- This is a special haul. Our friend Robin @fashionablytwisted invited me to go with her on a private pick. We had a blast and found some pretty amazing treasures. I also received a special package from the Godfather of restorations @johnfix1 . I hope you enjoy the video and as always thank you for watching.

More cool stuff! My favorite is the frozen adjustable wrench. I love the pipe wrenches and the adjustable wrenches with the s handles and the sloped handles. Thanks for another good video.

George ,, I was rolling through again,eye balling that cool old school drill press,,, 1898 date is awesome,, that could set on my desk, in its cool patina as is , and would also look amazing with a resto,, both ways its an eye popping piece of history

lol.......I have magnifiers everywhere.......one in my pocket, by my recliner, basement workshop, garage workshop, tool bag at work, computer at work and even in the kitchen. I was at an estate sale last weekend and I had forgotten my pocket magnifier so I actually found one at the sale to use, bought it and it came home with me.
Hey Todd, I got one that has a string so you can wear it around your neck and guess what, I don't know where it is either! LOL. Take it easy and I'll catch up with ya later.
I have my dads old Goodell Pratt utility lathe from the same era. Pop bought it as a basket case at an auction when i was maybe 10-12 YO. Dad cleaned, repainted and reassembled it and made a very nice bench and painted a color complimenting the red and black of the lathes original colors. Dad was not a machinist, but he increased and improved on his tooling for the machine and did perform an amazing amount of work on the crude machine over the next 40 or so years. I kept the machine after dad died when i had to clean out his shop. I could not bear parting with it though I know i will never put it to use as i have a larger, newer, better tooled and capable thread cutting lathe.
As i kid, the first sparks of interest i had in the machining of material were due to the very basic things my dad taught me on that machine. With both 3 & 4 jaw chucks due to the upgrades he made he taught me how to center stock in a 4 jaw chuck using a mag base and dial indicator. Of couse how to drill with the tailstock. The purpose and use of center drills, how to grind a lathe cutter, the differences in materials lathe cutters are made from HSS, carbide, etc. Additionally he taught me how to set the cutter bit in the lantern style rocker on the tool post. Basics of feed rates, speed, and depth of cut to get the most out of the machine, basic machine safety, how to read micrometers, dial and vernier calipers and dial indicators. And good work practices when using a metal lathe like lubricating prior to use, and proper treatment of the lathe ways.
All of these things he taught me with a very crude, severely limited, and very old utility lathe! That explains my inabily to part with that machine after he passed. Your drill and the brand reminded me of where my first sparks of interest in machine shop work as hobby came from.
Herb, that is a fantastic memory thank you for sharing it with us. It always amazes me how these old tools can bring back memories like that or inspire us.. I'm glad I could bring this drill press home and will get it back into working order. I'm sure someone used it and was probably very proud to have it. Take care My friend.
Hi George- Your Herbrand screwdriver had the distinguished honor of being the most uncomfortable screwdriver ever made. 😂👍. The adjustable looks like a custom ground Billings (ground by a customer) Charles Ethan Billings (1834-1920) and Christopher M. Spencer co-founded the Billings & Spencer Company. Great stuff! Maybe it was a prototype wrench or possibly just modified but whoever did it did a really good job if I remember correctly Charles E billings was an inventor

@Uwannawatch I'm doing alright just got a frozen shoulder I've been dealing with due to a rotor cuff tear so it's been a little slow going don't have full range of motion might need surgery just depends on what the doc says

Drill press trumps all, and I nominate the Herbrand vp! You may have stumbled upon something else to collect. Magnifying 🔎 they're all over the place and cheap. I have one in every room, they make old easy! Great video George, all the best to you and the fam. Peace brother!

George, you lucky stiff, finding that drill press was a sweet find. That Herbrand screwdriver, it would be fun to see if a person could make wood inserts to fit in the handle openings/ spans, use something like Purple Heart or some type of wood that stand out for contrast. I guess my original comment didn't get through. So, the crucked handle adjustable is one I would enjoy restoring, rusty and froze up. That Herbrand screwdriver is cool. Mr. George that drill press is awesome. What a find . The last time I saw one of those was around 55 years ago being used by my uncle. Picking was slim yesterday I did find a Cee Tee pliers made in James Town NY. $1.00

Bro, what a great day for you! Good stuff from John and the flea market produced for you this week! No way I would have walked by that drill press either. You can do a light clean up or full restoration and you can't go wrong. The Herbrand tent stake is pretty cool too.

Killer finds, especially the “breast drill,” I’ve seen tiny versions of the drill without the stand marketed to jewelers and watch makers, generally about half the size of typical egg beater drills.
That press and the size of the drill itself leads me to think you have something really special on your hands. ✨

Normally......but that Snap on ratchet is a top notch trophy. That is like being presented an Emmy . I would of had to tHank my manager, the crew I work with , the director of course......my speech would have continued on for five minutes . There's just something about those Snap ons!

Nice antique drill press , im gonna say its all original George that looks like the right size drill to go in it . Lovely item well worth 50. And yes itll be great restored , an occasional user ! I've had a couple of those Herbrand screwdrivers. Just looked it up and had know idea it had that much value. Definitely my favorite.

@@Uwannawatch Hey George, I found a sold one on ebay for $64.95 and another for $12.99. The first one I had I sold at the flea market for $5, but I have another one that might have to stay with my collection. Nice find.
Dude! That drill press is awesome! Come heck or high water that would have come home with me too! So it is not clear how it operates. I see that you crank the handle to spin the chuck, but does cranking the drill also lower the drill into the work, or does it raise the table, or is there another lever to lower the drill? If so you would not have a free hand to hold the work. You NEED to do a follow up video on the drill press to demonstrate it.
We'll go over all that when I restore it.

That wrench reads C.E. Billings. I collect that Herbrand style screwdriver, I have about 20 in my collection so far. Uncomfortable or not, you’re going to love that screwdriver.

I think the wrench is CE Billings. The second line looks like Pat'd Feb 18th. It must have been modified because after the 18th, the year is missing. Oh man! That vintage drill press is my favorite!

For ten bucks there are some really cool pieces, love both of the adjustable wrenches and that herbrand. I have always wanted to find a king dick type wrench. That drill press is totally awesome. Thanks for sharing!

The drill press is a stunner. I wonder if you actually have two tools - a brest drill and a drill press base it is attached to. I say that because the drill itself has the curved piece that goes against the users chest. Why would that piece be on a drill press? I have seen and have a few accessory drill press bases that you could attach your hand held electric drill to and have a poor mans drill press. Could this be an early version of the same idea? IDK, but your find is a cool treasure, as are the other tools today.

George you MAJORLY SCORED on the Goodell Pratt drill press from Greenfield Massachusetts! I love tools made in my home state! Oh I do love that little king dick style adjustable wrench I do think it was changed by its original owner for a special need.

After spending the past hour or so digging around patent records based on the information I could see and I heard you say, I believe it is Patent No. 557,328, "Breast Drill" Patented on Mar. 31, 1896. It was patented by A. D. & H. E. Goodell. Patent states that they "have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Drills" that "has for its object to provide a drill the base of which shall, while it is being operated, rest against the breast of the operator and be there steadied or held firmly by a handle secured to the frame and while the drill is being operated through the medium of a crank and gear-wheels by a rapid or comparatively slow rotary movement." The diagrams are also remarkably similar.

You sure the ratchet is 1/4" and not a 9/32"? Many old war years Snap-on & Plumb are 9/32" , but look like 1/4" till you try to stick a 1/4" socket on them tough to tell.
