I prefer to receive copies of the complete audio files. I've found useful room tone and dialogue walla in the far reaches of the handles compared to having only 10 or 20 second handles. Though in most cases the 10 to 20 secs have been okay! Thanks for this. I often have to educate editors about how to export from Premier. Here you have displayed the settings they encounter. Thank you so much.

    Super video! Thanks!
The only thing that scares though is the volume levels in the sound. Those will hard to fix on the sound post :)

For a beginner, what is the purpose of Broadcast Wave vs. AIFF? What's the difference between "Trim Audio Files" vs. "Copy Complete Audio Files"? Where does this magic number "250 Handle Frame" come from? It would be nice to explain a little more and go over the "Why" because they're just as important, if not more than, the "How". In any case, appreciate the video. Thanks!

I'm a sound designer. Broadcast WAV comes embedded with time-stamp data, so if the files get mixed up or pulled out of sync, one can then reinstate them to their original position in the timeline using that embedded positioning data. I'm not sure if AIFF has this - it might. On "Trim Audio Files" vs. "Copy Complete Audio Files" - this is very important for a number of reasons. First, we need to crossfade between shots, so either of the two above settings will do for that if the audio is clean. For sound design and dialogue editing purposes, if you trim to say 10 second handles only, then we only get 10 seconds of audio handle beyond the threshold each edge of the shot. This might not be enough audio to find the pieces of room tone/atmos that need to be used to patch/clean up shots or to create crossfade conditions. If you 'copy complete audio' then you get maximum opportunity to find more ideal pieces of room tone/atmos, dialogue walla and SFX in the handles. In the handles, I find SFX, foley and dialogue walla from the same recorded space which can be used for sound design purposes. These sounds found in the handles exhibit the same acoustic qualities of reverberation and timbre that exist within the 'used' part of the shot, so can be edited into the scene without the need fo time consuming filter work (reverb, EQ, compression etc). I hope this helps.

Hello, I am not seeing an export AAF option in Adobe Premiere Pro 2022. My sound designer needs this - any advice? I'm on the newest Mac laptop

Hi there David, this is a known issue in the new Premiere versions (have no idea why). I would simply export an OMF file, which is almost the same as AAF.

I tried this and got an error message that it couldn't complete due to video files. I had to delete all my video files to export in Premiere Pro.

How do you send the audio files (after final editing/mixing) back to premiere pro?

I just send the mix as an audio wav. file

Thank you for this video! I have one question: how does exporting an AAF from Premiere work when you're main sequence is primarily using nested sequences? Does AAF understand it has to go down into the nested sequence to get those audio files? I have a 13 minute film that is broken up into 11 nested sequences for the different scenes and would like to export it all into AAF. Do I need to do each nested sequence individually?
Liked and subbed , thank you again!

      Hi Gabriel, Thanks for subscribing:)
Nesting the audio isn't really recommended, and you'll have to restore the original audio before you export AAF.
I found this tutorial on how to easily unnest sequences:

      Hope that helps.

You have to unnest all your audio files.

Doesn't look like AAF exists anymore for premiere pro. this is crazy if it's true

It's not available on M1 Macs because Adobe is terrible. If you switch over to using Premiere in Rosetta2 mode you'll get back AAF which is ridiculous and shameful that Adobe still has not fixed this.
