To be fair he was never huge over here in the UK.

First reaction to this movie I've seen where he wasn't recognized, I agree it's probably the UK thing.

The driving instructor was John Houseman, one of the most important figures in 20th century American theater.
Houseman collaborated with Orson Welles through the 30s and collaborated on _Citizen Kane._ Houseman went on to direct and produce many plays on Broadway. He was the founding Director of the drama program at The Julliard School, which has produced such talents as Kevin Kline (Otto in _A Fish Called Wanda_), Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya in _The Princess Bride_), Christopher Reeve (Superman in the 1978 film, or, as my friend Bobby Newell has it, "The only blue eyes"), the great Patti Lupone, and the late Robin Williams.
While primarily a director, Houseman did act on stage and in films from time to time, and eventually on television, even winning a Best Supporting Acting Oscar for his role in the 1973 film, _The Paper Chase_. In that film he played a professor in a law school, which role he reprised in the 1978 TV series based on the film. So making him a driving instructor is a parody of his most well-known role.

16:00 The "finger" thing often gets missed. It's a callback to the scene where Frank was attacked by one of Ludwig's thugs in the factory, and the thug accidentally went into the meat-grinder. Said factory was apparently making the hot-dogs for the ballpark, so Ludwig finding his own minion's remains in his lunch is a little poetic.
The complete lack of a reaction to the pillow throw at 8:24 hurt me. That's probably my favorite bit in the whole movie. 😂
She did crack a little bit of a smile. Her reaction of "who?" when Weird Al appeared is what hurt me. I had to pause the video to process it.😦

@@wrf85 .. Actually, Leslie Nielsen was a Danish-Welsh Canadian. His father was an immigrant from Denmark who joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and his mother from Wales.
And his brother was Deputy Prime Minister.
And he often played villains, which is a little shocking if you're only familiar with his comedy roles. He uses the same deadpan seriousness, but makes it quite threatening.

Leslie Nielsen's brother Erik flew 33 bombing missions with 101 Squadron in WW2, where he was awarded the DFC. He later became a Member of Parliament in Canada.
Actually Erik Nielsen was Deputy Prime Minister for nearly 2 years, and Leader of the Opposition for about 3 months.
The older lady who portrayed Ludwig's secretary is actually the mother of the directors. She was also in Airplane; she portrayed the lady attempting to apply makeup at the worst possible moments.
Baseball game notes:
The Vaseline in the pitcher's hat is to let him doctor the ball. A baseball thrown with some wetness or other scuffing on it (known a spitball, because they originally doctored the ball with their spit) will come at the batter differently and spin in unexpected ways. Baseball banned the spitball in 1920, but pitchers have been trying to get around it ever since. Normally, when an umpire checks a pitcher, he's looking for the Vaseline (or KY Jelly, or sandpaper, or nail file, or whatever else you can imagine), hence the joke: Drebin doesn't care about the obvious illegal substance, showing he's not a real umpire.
The escapades in the base paths when Drebin starts throwing the ball is a rundown. The ball was hit into play and the Angel fielders are trying to tag out a Mariner runner before he can stop at a base. The two fielders are trying to cut down the runner's room to run when Drebin steps in, catches the ball, and throws it to the runner, who is trying to avoid the ball like the Devil avoids holy water (though hitting him with the ball won't cause him to be out; the runner catching the ball would be called out for interfering with play).
The first batter of the game was Jay Johnstone, who had retired a few years earlier (and died just a few months ago). Johnstone was a journeyman outfielder who played for many teams, but mostly the Los Angeles Dodgers (the other team in Los Angeles is the Angels, playing in the game, though it was using "California Angels" as the moniker at the time of this game). Johnstone had played for the Angels, but like 20 years before. To give an idea how serious this game actually was, Johnstone was a left-handed batter, which means he would have stood on the other side of the plate.
The right fielder who was out to kill the Queen was Reggie Jackson, who was an incredibly famous ballplayer for his home run power (he's a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame) and for his massive ego. Johnstone in his memoirs Temporary Insanity (Johnstone was legendary for his wit and his pranks) wrote that, when he and Jackson were teammates on the Yankees about a decade before, Jackson was bragging to the other players about how many home runs he had hit and how amazing his other statistics were. Johnstone had to point out that Jackson struck out quite a bit (he's still the all-time leader in strikeouts while batting) to deflate Jackson's ego. Seriously, he dominated the sports chatter of the era. There was a candy called a Reggie Bar named after him and his remark that if he were to play in New York, they'd have to name a candy bar after him, and he got traded to New York. Pitcher Catfish Hunter, a teammate of Jackson's in Oakland and New York, quipped that he tried to eat the candy bar, but he opened the package and the candy told him how great it was. But he was great: his three home run game in the 1977 World Series was legendary for years afterwards.
On a further sports note, the unfortunate Officer Nordberg was played by O.J. Simpson, who was a football legend in the 1970s and killed his wife in 1994.
Played in a celebrity golf tournament in the mid 90's that had Jay Johnstone in it. Unfortunately, wasn't in his foursome.
surprised you didn't mention wrigley field in chicago (the LA wrigley field was torn down at this point but used to house Cubs minor league, the Angels when they were a minor league team and then later the Angels proper) was used in the establishing shot of the game but dodger stadium was used for the rest.
In all the reaction videos ive watched for the Naked Gun, nobody ever comments on the fact that Enrico Pallazo's tuxedo fits him perfectly. LOL!!!!
I mean, true, but if that's the only unusual thing you pick-up on in this movie, you may want to re-watch it. Any commitment to reality goes out the door in the first minute or so.

Weird Al has been the King of Song Parodies since the late 1970's when he was in college. His early hits were "Another One Rides the Bus", " I lost on Jeopardy", and "I love Rocky Road". In the 80's and 90's, he had some really big hits parodying Michael Jackson, with "Eat it" and "Fat". Also had hits like, "Amish Paradise", "The Saga Begins", "Foil", " White and Nerdy", "Tacky" and many others.
He is, as advertised, weird but is a seriously good musician. All his songs are of good quality. It's a rabbit hole you should be happy to fall into.
He also did a movie called UHF. It's incredibly silly, which suits his personality perfectly. Worth a watch too.
The one he did for phantom menace was better than most serious songs

I love that you are too young to know who OJ is. You pick every movie I loved when I was your age. The tv show that proceeded this, Police Squad is also awesome. The Three Amigos, that's right up there too.
The red things, that Frank and Ed were eating in the car, were pistachios. There are conflicting stories as to why, but the shells were dyed red here in the States; that practice started dying off during the '80s. That was a big pile of pistachio shells outside Frank's car door.

Weird Al is an American treasure. He's been around for over 40 years now. His most recent really good song parodies are Tacky (Happy by Pharrell), Word Crimes (Blurred Lines) and White and Nerdy (Ridin' Dirty). 100% recommend.

The Vaseline in the baseball hat would be used to “doctor” the baseball and make it move more deceptively when pitched, and thus harder for the batter to hit.
It makes the ball slip off the bat , making a solid hit almost impossible

This film has two sequels that came out after this, those being "Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear" (1991), and "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult" (1994). They're both pretty good as well.

The "big pair" at 3:52 are the cooling towers at a decommissioned nuclear power plant (San Onofre) on the road between Los Angeles and San Diego, not far from where I live. One of the local breweries produces a beer named in its honor, "Nuclear Chi Chis".

This movie is so good! One of the best comedies ever. You'll have to watch multiple times to get every joke there are so many.
Priscilla Presley was about 45 in this, it was only 11 years after Elvis, her husband died. She looks way younger because... Hollywood.
I never noticed his hunch-back right in the opening sequence when he climbs over the table! I guess they had to keep him on a harness even for that sort of stunt for insurance purposes or his own safety request.

Nordberg is played by the now infamous OJ Simpson, who was previously an NFL pro football player in the USA - if you know who he is I don’t need to explain, if you don’t, his murder trials and publicly viewed police pursuit are almost legendary, arguably resulting in the world having the Kardashian family foisted upon it.
This movie was before the murder, and was a flow on from the movie Airplane! that you watched where one of the supporting actors was Kareem Abdul Jabbar, a famous NBL pro basketball player, who was there because the movie Airplane! was parodying also had a pro sports player as a supporting actor.
"OJ Simpson? Who is he?" oh boy...
Let's not tell her. Why spoil it?

What he did or does at home doesn't even factor into it for me. Same with Kevin Spacey and everyone else they're trying to erase from history. I'm watching them for their art, not their personal lives.

This is based on an older B&W sitcom, Police Squad, and the intro with the roof of the car was taken from that.
"Nothing to see here" is my favorite gag in the whole movie.
For some context this film was based on a TV series called Police Squad. Hence the name of the film from the files of Police Squad. A lot of the jokes are taken from Police Squad. The show was canceled after one series of six episodes, which is criminal. The TV company thought people wouldn't watch it because you had to pay attention. So Zucker Abrahams Zucker decided to take all the material left for the second series and made it into The Naked Gun film. It was a huge hit and still to this day. I do recommend watching Police Squad it is well worth a watch. Considering how much you liked this film. Truly one of the best comedies ever made along with Airplane! It will never not make me laugh no matter how many times I watch them.

Fun facts: The Naked Gun was a movie sequel to the short lived comedy show "Police Squad!" (1982) that also stared Leslie Nielsen. Most of the characters from the show (all but 3) was recast in the movies as the same characters, most notably: Captain Hocken (got recast to George Kennedy because the studio demanded a award winning actor in a leading role) and Detective Nordberg (who was white in the show but they thought would be hilarious if they recast him as a black man). Nordberg was in the movies played by the now infamous O. J. Simpson who was arrested for the murder of his wife the same year the 3rd movie was released.
Just like with Airplane! they chose mostly actors who hadn't done comedy before.

It essentially follows an old series called Police Squad. Same guy, Leslie Nielson.
Re: The "5 gun vs 5 gun showdown", the trope is usually used to show that one group is cowardly (they give up), or that the other group doesn't actually want to fight (they drop their weapons & cooperate), or that the other group has a tactical advantage (they have bigger guns, or have armor/shields.)
Also, the thing with all the quotes in the credits, those are people who (generally) only had one line in the movie.
Probably the best scene in Saving Private Ryan.

I think this is sillier than the "Airplane!" movie which had some smarter humor. The "Police Squad" series only lasted 6 episodes because the network thought people had to pay too much attention to get the jokes. All 6 are on You Tube as well some compilations of best moments. Also "Airplane II: The Sequel" is worth seeing, I don't think anyone has reacted to it yet.
Best joke from Police Squad: "Who are you and how did you get in here? "I'm the locksmith, and I'm the locksmith."
Enthusiastic seconding for Airplane II: The Sequel! I don't know why hardly anyone who has reacted to the first movie has given this one a go. Not only is it just as chock-full of gags as its forerunner, but also it contains one of William Shatner's greatest comedic performances!
By rights, this movie should have done for Shatner what its predecessor had done for Leslie Nielsen. Perhaps it was because Shatner was already a figure of fun (both for his acting and the alleged toupée), while Nielsen's successful comic turn came literally out of the blue.
That is, it would have, if Airplane! had been shot in daylight. 😁 😆
Not sure I agree that one's "sillier" or "smarter" than the other. They both have heaping helpings of both types of humour, which is the ZAZ trademark.

The Naked Gun series was itself a spinoff of the TV series Police Squad. Only 6 episodes were done.
If nobody has mentioned, the original 6 part TV show is an absolute must for you to see. Most of the jokes you see here were in the TV programmes. Leslie Nielsen was much funnier because he was so much more deadpan in those, but beware, the jokes come in so much quicker and sharper, especially the visual ones. Another little fact about the sequel movies. The third one, 33 1/3, is subtitles "The Final Insult". It was originally meant to be "Naked Gun 33 1/3, Just for the Record", but the executives wouldn't allow it.
Just checked Leslie Nielsen's career Dawn, really impressive spanned 60 years he made over a hundred films and 150 tv programs along with 220 characters served in the Canadian air force during the war. Talented man. Sadly died in 2010 aged 84
Nielsen began acting as a supporting role actor in the 1950s and always played serious roles until he was cast as the pilot in Airplane. He was so good at deadpan delivery that after Airplane he switched to comedy.

I remember this movie when it came out and how it was painful to watch as I just couldn't stop laughing all the time.
This was probably already answered but they were eating pistachio nuts. They were dyed red back then to make them all a uniform color. Harvested pistachios use to have marks and stains on the shells that made them look unappealing. I’m not sure when they stopped dying them.

The first movie is just the best. Because Nielsen plays everything straight in this movie, like he does in Airplane, in the later movies he stops doing that and it's just not the same...
