      @Darkzz Lord Well, yes, but most weren't real criminals - the harsh laws back then meant you could be sentenced to seven years transportation for stealing anything over one shilling (i.e. ten cents) in value, so a lot of people ended up en route to Australia for minor misdemeanours like nicking a loaf of bread to feed their starving family. As it is, less than 10% of Australians today have any convict ancestry. And let's face it - for a nation to grow from a couple of hundred convicts dumped on a beach on the other side of the world, to a thriving First World country with a high standard of living, universal healthcare, (almost) free university education and the world's sixth-largest economy, in only just over two hundred years, is one hell of an achievement.

    I watch this movie every year on Halloween. Honestly, it's not a bad film. True it's got cheesy dialogue and a few plot points that are unresolved, but honestly, it's an action/adventure film based on the classic Universal Monsters franchise; you honestly expected it to be on the Best Picture list for the Oscars? It's silly, action-packed, and filled with fun. The visuals and the designs are cool, and the ones for the monsters are some of the most original out there, and honestly, they're my personal favorites. When I think of a werewolf or a vampire, I imagine them looking like what they're portrayed in Van Helsing. They look so menacing and powerful, and I would hate to run into either of them. Also, props to the filmmakers for such awesome casting. I really liked David Wenham as Carl; he's a goofy comedic foil to Van Helsing, and every scene with him is cool to watch. I also liked Richard Roxbough's Dracula; he's so over-the-top with his villainy, and you could tell he was having fun with the role. At the same time there were a couple of scenes where he was genuinely menacing, like the scene where he coldly kills Dr. Frankenstein. Hugh Jackman did a good job as Van Helsing, though I kind of think he was mostly channeling the same characteristics he used in his interpretation of Wolverine. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing; he's still a good actor, and he delivers the lines he's given really well.
    Regardless, it may not be the greatest movie ever, but if you're for a great action romp with cool action scenes involving a badass main character, I'd recommend watching Van Helsing.

      Main character isn't badass. He's hilarious. When he first showed up at the village, Anna and the town's folk had him turning one way and the other. Then he just kept holding the trigger down on the crossbow knowing he'll *eventually* hit a vampire and he dropped the goddamn thing about four times! Even when he's talking to Dracula, he's got this face that looks more confused than badass and oh my god he's just great. XD
      I just feel like his overall attitude towards everything is going something like, "Hey I was sent here to kill vampires. All this talk of history is making me uncomfortable. That's Carl's work".

    • @chavamara
      @chavamara 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Still my favourite version of a werewolf. They've got just the right combination of wolf and man in it! :) And I think they did a very good job in the characterizations of each monster, even if the backstories have been completely changed. And really, if it's clear that the movie is just for having fun, I will enjoy it! I love this movie!
      Still love the scene where Dracula is actually dancing to Velkan's screams. It was perfect.

      Loved this comment. I feel the same way about most films. People like to impose their idea of what is the 'best' film on other people, simply because they feel their opinion is correct. I've had a lot of people mock my taste in film because I enjoyed Van Helsing (and some of Stephen Sommers other films), because evidently, they're the self-appointed arbiters of 'good taste'. We need to start articulating ourselves in the way that you have MrPjw5 - talking about what films are 'our favourites' instead of what is 'the best', because we're dealing with an inherently subjective medium.
      Van Helsing was one of my favourite action/adventure films as a young boy. I doubt that's going to change now that I'm becoming a jaded adult. It's fun and it's got my favourite interpretation of Dracula and my favourite creature designs. The brides of Dracula were so brilliantly beautiful and terrifying. Frankenstein is also the most likeable character in this film. Fun, silly and bad-ass. Love it.

With chips, cone ice creams, we just had a good day with snacks and a pleasant enjoyment. Whatta movie this was! Especially the BGM is electrifying. Also i heard this movie had got such negative reviews, and thought that dracula movies are all very common in Hollywood, so they didn't consider this movie as good one. In India it was a massive huge Blockbuster. We celebrated it, it was around 150 days Housefull in theatres. Just an epic moments those days. IMO, this was one of excellent movie.

    This movie had the most impressive vampire cgi I have ever seen....I was very much impressed as a kid some 15 years ago....i especially liked the encounter with the brides when van Helsing arrived at Transylvania...the bride costumes were also lit...and a charming and charismatic count dracula
