      MK1 is great.
The notion that MK is inferior to SF is a MYTH. The reason MK doesn't do as well in the competitive scene is because fatalities aren't competitive, and they change the META every new game.
Sometimes they're 3D. Sometimes they're old school. MK1 is a love letter to MVC!
They change it up too often for professional players to re-learn a new concept of play every time a game comes out.
Also, de-synchrinization undoubtedly played a huge role in the collapse of our tournament scene, because people weren't playing the game enough to take seriously in a professional context.
MK1 derangement syndrome is getting old. It keeps getting better and better. I love it.
The myth SF is better than MK is rooted in MK's inception, because people were comparing 1992 MK with SF2. SF2 was better than 1992 MK, it is NOT however, better than MK2 or MK3.
SF6 Is a better PRODUCT than MK1, but I don't think the actual gameplay is better at all - it comes down to personal preference and it's all subjective.
I own all these games and they're all great. MK1 and Tekken 8 are my favorites.
It's a great time for fighting games in general, but a rough time for the MK franchise. That does not mean SF is inherently the superior game. They all require skill.

    • @neoconnor4395
      @neoconnor4395 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It's understandable the PC players are upset. They paid for a product, it didn't work, and there weren't enough matches because there was no crossplay.
The Switch players got shafted too.
      HOWEVER...
I got it on PS5, so I was fine. Of the big 3, MK1 was my favorite.
But yes, the product of MK1 was bad, but the essence of it's gameplay is arguably some of the best.
MK1 is my favorite fighting game.

Initially I was confused about all the hate MK1 was getting, but after thinking about it I believe my positive experience with the game greatly relied on my experience as a PS5 player.

Characters in NRS games have different strings and special moves in every MK. The way your character works, fundamentally changes in every game. Street Fighter (and Tekken,) have shown the characters' legacy moves/movesets more love. Imagine if in SF7, Ryu doesn't do Shoryuken anymore, instead it's a divepunch. and he has no ex fireball. Superman was still superman, simple combos and long ramge lasers.
Batman was still batman, has a tool for every place on the screen, but using the wrong one gets you killed.
In MK Johnny Cage has gained and lost moves like crazy. Johnny's forceball was just axed in MK1, ex uppercut combo extends but doesn't extend in the same way like at all. Nut punch in one game combo extends, safe in another game. It's so weird

18:59 "I wish it (Mortal Kombat) was more dark". The words they're looking for is "atmosphere". The MK classics were Very atmospheric with dots of humour everywhere, including the cartoonish violence, preventing the tone to not get too heavy. It's like the old Fallout games.

Saw this segment of the stream (fire video btw) but the issue with Mortal Kombat 1 is that most of the kameo roster (which is the main component of the game) pretty much suck with a lot of characters. There is no reason to use someone like Sonya with Kenshi for example. Once all the kameos are as buffed as the dlc ones the game will benefit more. I also can’t agree that every nrs mk game feels the same 11 and 1 definitely play different from each other just from the fact 11 had core fundamentals mechanics that were completely flawed.

With SF and Tekken, there isnt much change to the mechanics for like 6 or 7 years, so you can settle into them over time. You have a better chance to get to the top and stay there because of it.

When MK showed up a few years later, it was very different to SF because of the block button and the different combo timing. But we had so many different style fighting games with Virtua Fighter, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Killer Instinct that it was hard to master just one, especially since the arcade version was not the same as the console version. Strike Throw is infinitely more bearable and fairer than a throw with guaranteed initial damage that leads to a true left right sequence with no indication of direction for where you are being thrown.

Definitely feel the Street Fighter bias has put thick layers of rose tinted glasses on its players and they often feel they have the better everything. Teching a throw in SF is so easy that people just feel to do it own wake up to basically tech by default. Whereas MK you actually have to know where to tech whether back or front. I’d love to see a discussion like this have a wider panel rather than two going back and forth. Weakest discussion thus far. Still enjoyed the episode.

I find SF6 being the most difficult compared to T8 and MK1. I do play all but the mental stack that SF6 has is too draining; too much too look out for. You go from one situation to the next really fast; decision speed. SF6 may be "easier" to pick up, but it doesn't mean you're fundamentally strong or a strong player (especially against a worldwide comp scene). Legacy skill is a huge advantage in Tekken due to the large roster and movelists. Small margin of the NRS scene is consistent, too many talk more than running the set! Fighting games are difficult in their own ways, this is just my opinion as someone who's been playing for long time. MK2 and KI were my first back in the day and I miss the dark atmospheres those games had.

I def feel like mkx is faster then tekken...idk about that one. That run mechanic and the sheer speed of some of the mix ups- it was not possible to react to a lot of things the way it is now in the endgame of MKX and even now it can be hard to react. Punishes in tekken are typically between 10-15 frames, the fastest jab in mkx is like 6f.

While the outer layers of system mechanics like variations, stage interaction and kameo all change from game to game the engine and animations and game feel all feel too similar , it’s like saying groves or isms in streeet fighter alpha are as drastic a change as going from alpha to third strike .I actually agree all modern mk play differently but feel the same

Tekken is you being given that whole cake and being able to chose which slice you want. Do you want a slice with a lot of frosting or no frosting? Do you want a big slice or a little slice? STREET FIGHTER, is like you being given all the ingredients and instructions needed to make a cake and being told "Good Luck and Have Fun", And when you look around, dudes are making beautiful 4 layer chocolate chip cakes, cheese cakes, some dudes just set their oven on fire, some guys are struggling to make the batter. Street Fighter feels much more alike than MK games. MK went from 2D to 3D to tag team to coop story back to 2D, then variations in MKX and MK11 which then were removed in MK1 when cameos where added. Even the pace of the games changes game to game. Street fighter seems to change moves into certain mechanics but besides that it’s always legacy.

Honestly imo a lot of the problems with NRS games can be solved simply by ending the 2 year cycle they got going on.
Not only would that give them time to optimize the game so that it actually works on all platforms but they can also balance the game even further and flesh out the mechanics more.
SF also makes it so each game is mechanically different from each other but the reason why it works for them and not MK is that they actually take time and make sure the mechanics are fine tuned.
And if NRS is going to stick with the 2 year cycle why tf are they not reusing assets like strings and specials?? One of the easiest ways NRS can cut corners while also giving players what they want through legacy skill and kitted out characters, but they just don’t. Like it’s straight up self sabotage at that point.

Hey @rewindNY and any other creators don't playing other games because of views. You could make a second channel to get the audience of the people that do want to see you playing Street Fighter. It sounds a lot of work, but it can make you have a backup plan in case that game dies or some other opportunity comes around the corner. It's smart to diversify, and if your audience is well defined on your curent channel, it is wise to have a second one that you can build without hurting the main one. On the business side is good too, companies can see you as more of a professional player than only a player in a specific niche. Of course I'm talking only about the creator side, the competitor side is a whole different story.

I don’t think Chris has ever sat down and played a MK or Injustice game lol. The only games that have remained very similar were Inj1/Inj2.
MK9 is so different from MKX, MKX is completely different from MK11, and MK1 feels like a whole different games from MK11. Some legacy stuff has remained like uppercuts, sweeps, and certain specials like ice ball but the game has drastically changed. That’s honestly what has bothered me so much as a MK fan.
I hate the fact that game uses the button layout it does with the forward + back punches and forward + back kicks or 1, 2, 3, 4.
I hate how the button combinations also turn into strings no matter what distance you’re at too. I’m not opposed to target combos or dial ups but these strings should only come out when they land, not from across the screen lol. It’s just something NRS stole from Tekken when they went to 3D and then they kept it.
MK’s layout only changed because it went fully 3D after mk4 but can you imagine MK if it kept its original layout with the high + low punch and high + low kick layout? That old style of MK is what made MK feel like MK to me. If you did repeatedly press the punches or spam them, then those series of low or high punches would come out until you stopped pressing them. You could even mix them up by pressing high punch, low punch, high punch. Or two lows and a high. Either way, it gave MK this feel to it that was MK.
MK2 had command normals like Baraka’s swipe but they weren’t as apparent and there were no overheads in MK until the 3D era so I imagine MK would have evolved to the point where command normals and mix ups would have been a thing by this point.
Either way, MK has changed a lot and it’s honestly been a bad thing to me because since mk9, every MK has been better to me and I felt like the lifespan should have lasted longer than it did. People complained so much about MK11 but I wish they were still supporting that game and while people like Tom Brady continue to cry about MK1. I think MK1 is NRS’ best fighting game of all time. Now is it a great fighter compared to all the fighting games that are out or have come out? Far from it nor is it balanced but it’s NRS’ best work IMO.

I will try to answer the question for him. At release the game had three broad problems: (1) it did not release in a stable condition with numerous bugs and online issues and lacked major online features like crossplay (now we have it), online practice, connection quality filters (now we have it), among many other promised elements; (2) MK1 was the first of the big three (old school) fighting franchises to implement a microtransaction system and it was wildly overpriced, and was paired with a tedious single player mode that had to be played to access costumes (when NRS had previously had some of the most robust costuming options in fighting games over Injustice 2/MK11), and, most importantly, (3) it released in an extremely unbalanced state that both nerfed popular characters from the beta (Sub-Zero primarily) and homogenized its new system (Cyrax and Kung Lao Kameos). So at launch you had a wildly overpowered top tier that functioned that way only because of their synergy with certain mechanics of the Kameo system. Shortly thereafter they released an insanely priced fatality and holiday level that sent anger to a fevered pitch.
NRS could have quickly quelled this problem with plans for a comprehensive balance patch and some free skins. But instead they dropped the prices of some items and created "sales" in their marketplace and nerfed Cyrax. The result, then, was that more characters fell back to the norm (Baraka for instance went from top tier to mid, immediately) and further homogenized Kameos as everyone used Kung Lao. By this time players desperately wanted changes to Kameo balance and buffs to their favorite characters, as the ninjas--Sub, Scorpion, Smoke, and Reptile--were all bad. Furthermore simple, yet bad, design decisions made a character like Johnny Cage and his 7 frame jab (the rest of the cast has an 8 frame jab) oppressive. As people became more annoyed with these individual problems NRS remained silent, only making it worse.
Then after Quan-chi, the second DLC character release, the game suddenly had a desync problem on top of already mediocre netcode. So players were having massive issues consistently playing online, while avoiding the grind of Invasions, and were being asked to shell out 5-10 dollars for the cool costumes. This was the true low point for MK1, especially after the patch that was supposed to fix the problem made it worse, and it took them a month to fix. Since then the DLC releases have been good. Every DLC character is fun and the added Kameos seem to use the system far better than most of those they designed. And at present the game has been well balanced. There is a pretty small bottom tier for a roster of the game's size; however the homogeneity of Kameos remains, as the newer Kameos are better than most of the old ones. They did create a big balance patch that added moves to weaker characters and fixed some of the most broken strategies. So the game feels, at this point, like it should have on launch. They have made Invasions less of a grind, are more giving with costumes in that mode, have added more online utility, and have better balanced the game (though it still requires work). But at this point many people, including myself to some degree, to other games. I have played more Street Fighter than I have since Alpha 2 and Tekken 8 has become my main game. And I only returned to play Ermac (one of my favorite characters), but I never took him online.
MK1 at its sale price is a solid game, but with the mass exodus of the casual market, I am not sure what the future holds for it.

No disrespect to Street Fighter it's an amazing game but MK is changing way too drastically every time and I'm a casual but I'm happy Rewind is on the same opinion as me!
In MK11 even the amplify was different and you had no cameos and the combos were harder to land and the brutalities had some crazy requirements that you had to remember and you had variations.
In MK1 your variations are your cameos and. In MK11 you had krusing blows which were vital for your combos cuz you didn't have lots of combo potential outside of them while in MK1 you have lots of combo potential but you don't have the cameos. In MK11 you hade defensive meter which was a nice mechanic for me but now you don't have it in MK1.
PS: That's just the latest 2 instalments of NRS I don't even know details about the previous ones.. :D

You did the mistake an interviewer should never do. Give your opinion on something you don't know that can be fact checked while in front of an expert on the matter. That MK games are similar take tainted your whole interview. But it was still fun to watch
