📚 My (Free) How to Draw Guidebooks: keshart.in/drawingcamplibrary/
    -------------------
    Description about the video:
Using the brush pen is pretty simple..all you need to know or the three things that i really focus on are these
    -LINE Control
    -Line weights
    -Practice
    1. LINE CONTROL
First thing you need you to know when it comes to inking with a brush pen is LINE CONTROL. And how do you control the line, it’s by controlling the pen and how do you control the pen, by controlling the hand…
You need to have such control over your hands and be able to take the pen where you need it go..not where it goes..and that comes with practice…
So here’s a simple routine I give out to people who are starting out to ink with a brush pen…
Take out a piece of paper and your brush pen and try this….
Draw 6 horizontal straight lines...of uniform width, this is important.
Then draw 6 vertical lines of uniform width.
Then draw curves the same way
    Then reverse curves,
    Then waves
Longer waves, shorter waves and so on.
So now you have practised uniform line control…
Now we are going to control the pressure of the brush to carry the line weights of those line…
When it comes to the Brush Pen, the more pressure you apply on the paper, the thicker the lines are….
So now, you repeat the same thing that you did with the uniform line width,
    And Start PRACTISING LINE WEIGHTS.
Draw 6 horizontal lines from thin to thick
Then vertical from thin to thick
And curves, waves and everything from thin to thick….
Make sure you do all of these with deliberate focus.
What you are doing here learning to create that mind muscle connection and build the skill of line control along with learning to apply the right kind of pressure on the pen.
Next up is the fun part…
    the DRAWING
    2. LINE WEIGHT
The coolest thing about the brush pen is it ability to create different line variations.
And the question i get most often is...how do you decide where the line needs to be thick and where it need to be thin.
    Well it pretty simple….
Take this stick for example and think of this stick as a line you’ve drawn with a brush pen…
If you take this stick bring it closer to you it becomes bigger and thicker...if bring it farther away from you, it becomes smaller and thinner.
The same principle applies to the lines that you are drawing...its an object in 3d space..
With that in mind, a good rule of thumb to follow is, make the lines thick for the objects that are closer to you and make it thin for the objects that are farther away from you…
And also make thick on the shadow areas and make it thin on areas where the light hits the object.
Every drawing that you draw is combination of multiple forms that are on different planes...some parts of that object are closer to you and some parts of it are farther away from you…
The third thing that you need to focus on when it comes to getting better at using the brush pen is
    3. PRACTICE.
You have to use the brush pen on a daily basis, use it on your sketches books to ink your sketches, use it daily, mileage, mileage and mileage, is what you need.
Take up a challenge like Inktober or 100 days of sketching and use the brush pen as your main medium.
And trust me, at the end of, YOU WILL GET BETTER.

I spent a year trying to draw with normal pens without luck, my myoclonus dystonia makes it hard enough as is but my experience with a brush pen showed me my hand tremors are just too bad to actually draw with ink. I was so disheartened I cried. Since then however, Iearned a few tricks, using large shapes, and drawing big, which helped me manage my issues to get something somewhat acceptable.

    • @vitriolicAmaranth
      @vitriolicAmaranth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, if you watch a lot of "masters," their lines are very shaky or uneven. They just lay down shaky lines consistently or in high volume so they don't stand out as flaws. Sketching is often the same thing taken to an extreme. I definitely understand being unable to get past perfectionism and wishing for clean lines though.

    • @sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608
      @sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@vitriolicAmaranth It's not perfectionism (Though I have the same problems like getting caught in the details as any other artist haha), it's not wanting to instantly ruin something you spent significant time on.
The problem is you are thinking shaky lines; it's a bit more like making huge streaks randomly through the entire thing you were drawing and accidentally flinging your pen part way across the room.
I can get away with things to a degree with pencil and an eraser albeit much slower than most folks, but pen on paper is just flat out of the question for me most days.
Thankfully digital options have let me ink, paint, and work in "permanent" mediums in a more manageable way.
I was actually able to quit my day job, I work as an artist for a living now; doing mostly creature design.

@@sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608 Lol! I’m sorry. The ‘accidentally flinging your pen part way across the room’ visual was just to much ‘reality’ for my sense of maturity and politeness could contain quite frankly. I chuckled when I got to that part of your comment. Lol. No disrespect. It only comes from already realizing the person you were responding to didn’t really understand the nature of your challenges. I suppose it’s difficult to know if it hasn’t struck within your own friend and/or family circle. I hope things are well just the same. Take care dear.

I had brush pens for some years now and I still suck at using them so I don't use them as often. :'D I always have trouble controlling my line weight with brush pens. Your exercises look promising. I'll try that, thank you so much! You're a freaking saint, other people would hide this sort of tutorial behind patreon or skillshare. It's becoming more rare to see people share their knowledge more openly with others.

From back in the day in animation and illustration, it was popular with using brush pen for the outlines, most notably ruled at the 2000s. Now that I've been felted nostalgic after making me feel like wanting to use the brush pen, wished they could've bring back the tool rather than the round soft outlines in the present-day.

I think I needed this video the first time I bought a brush pen because when I bought it and then tried it out, I got pretty annoyed and frustrated. So, now I know :D thank you for showing me how to use it, meaning: practice and line control! :D

I have the Sakura pigma brush pen and I love it I agree with the brush pen being the best type of pen although some other artists has different opinions about that I still love the brush pen I just got it right now and I'm currently using it.

I don't get why anyone would unlike this video. It's right on point, technically right and best of all simply explained. Great video to share to art students or beginners looking to learn more about other ink tools than just pens or nibs.
