  • Pumala to Buddha Point Hiking
According to legend, the royal messengers once traveled between Paro and Thimphu on the Pumola Trail to do business.
The trail follows the river down below Phajoding. The start point is above the Takin Reserve, at a small shop. It winds through blue pine forest, with varying plant and animal life, including the famous rhododendron.
Cross the creek and head to the left, following the path. It splits and rejoins frequently so it doesn’t matter which route you take. If you lose the path when it crosses a meadow, just keep heading up and you should be able to find signboard.
Once you reach the Pomola Pass, denoted by a chorten, there are a number of options, each of which will take you to a different end point. To the right is the gompa ( The temple was neglected for many years, yet thanks to divine mercy and undeniable charm, it has avoided falling into ruin. To rebuild the temple, a young lama who was committed and enthusiastic took charge. The Buddha, Guru Rinpoche, and other great Master statues are the center of attention. Older wall paintings include new additions as well) and the path that joins the Phajoding trek; the trek straight ahead will take you to Paro, parallel to the Druk Path (some horsemen take this track back to Paro in a day after supporting groups on The Path - it is not recommended to try this without a guide); the path to the left will take you back to Thimphu Buddha Point.
At a height of 4000 meters, the highest passes are located. There’s a clearing with a large ‘picnic’ rock in the middle just after the trail rejoins the creek. It’s a good place for a lunch or a snack break.
As you descend from the highest peak, you will see a 360-degree panorama of Thimphu City, as well as a faint paro Dongkala Temple and Jelela Dzong.
A yak herding path will come across a number of grazing fields. Sometimes the path is trampled to mush by the beast traffic, but the plus of this is that this action creates a clear trail.
Some bikers utilize this route for adventure, and you'll pass a yak herder's home on the way down. If you get lost, keep in mind that there are white markers along the trail, or you can always follow the electric pole, which will take you to the largest sitting Buddha in the world. At Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, your day hike comes to a close.
