- KTVU has learned that Kaiser Permanente is telling its workers at its downtown Oakland headquarters to stay in the building during lunch. The directive was given over concerns about crime. But many disagree with these orders including businesses who say they depend on workers patronizing their restaurants.

How embarrassing and devastating for the city by its totally failed leadership and crime supporting D.A.
it was also the voters of california when they passed prop 47
OK, but that leadership has been installed and supported by the people of Oakland. Those people would just replace leadership with the same. People seem to have a fantasy that you just have to be nice to criminals and everything will be better. At some point when enough people in Oakland have experienced enough crimes against them they will start picking and supporting leaders with a plan to attack criminals. Seems unlikely though. People in Oakland have a very long history of supporting criminals.
Look at all the people they interviewed. They'll just vote someone else in to office with the same far left policies. They don't see it is a safety problem, they think Kaiser employees should just go out on the streets and risk getting mugged. That way everyone can be cool man.🌲🍄🍇🍉

Uneffingbelievable!
Good for Kaiser making that decision. The small businesses that want to complain about them or complain to the wrong people they need to complain to their local government and the police for not keeping the streets safe. I live in the greater Seattle area and I tell people all the time not to come visit Seattle because it's turned into such a dump with rampant crime and drug use out in the open and the cops don't do anything about either.
Yeah, I saw that documentary Seattle is dying and it looks like SF is on the same trajectory.
Everyone in Oakland complains to the city government about crime, but the city does nothing but offer boilerplate PR statements. That's why people are trying to recall the mayor and DA.
Small businesses can convert to take out. Get rid of wait staff and hire delivery staff. More efficient. Those businesses would also be safer because they could barricade better against being robbed. Safer for their customers too. But I guess businesses don't like change or caring about their customer's safety.
Don't blame the police
The Blue city council’s and liberal judges have the police under their thumbs you get what you vote for
Its very obvious that the small businesses are only concerned about their bottom line, not your safety. I agree with Kaiser. This is sad that they should have to take these measures to keep their employees safe, when city leaders and law enforcement done give a damn, because if they did, these steps would not have to be taken.
Work at home in Wyoming, it’s a lot safer there. They actually have police that can do their job and not hampered by politics.
The thing is, in areas of the world where civilization has gained a foothold, there is a solution to this issue. Rumor has it that it involves actually enforcing laws.

Not happening anytime soon in CA..
It's a recommendation, employees can leave if they want to.
*Kaiser Permanente* is looking out for their bottom line. They don’t want to Be hit by careless lawsuits as a result of on-the-clock injuries or death by leaving the workplace facilities.
19 years ago my grandson had to go to Kaiser in Oakland for surgery. The security guard told my daughter she absolutely had to get him when she went outside to smoke. nineteen years ago it has only got worse
The only way to legislate safety of the public is to put the public first. Obviously, Newsom and Bonta would disagree with that.
Somehow making the streets safer places is never a first priority. Criminals are never to be blamed. It's always coming down to blaming the corporates. It's only getting worse.

Agreed!
They're working on it I assure you.
Those who disagree with Kaiser have a right to do so, as they don't want anyone telling them what to do on their lunch hour. But as soon as one of those Kaiser employees gets robbed or assaulted, they will turn around and say, "Why didn't Kaiser warn us about the crime and/or do anything about this?" It's important to be vigilant wherever you go these days. I'm also hearing Kaiser is closing some of it's downtown offices (They own a lot of buildings, which are empty as many have chosen to work from home now)...and moving some of those in Oakland to other parts of the Bay Area. Should Kaiser pull out of Oakland....there will be little left.
Kaiser Dems, stay in CA please.
Reminds you of the need for castles in the Middle Ages out of fear of roaming marauders.
Kaiser Permanente needs to offer a cafeteria and/or other food options in the building if they're going to restrict their employees from leaving during their lunchtime. Most people want to get away from their desk during lunch; many large companies offer a cafeteria and other food choices in a nice place to relax. Kaiser certainly has the resources to do this.
A valued employer whose safety the city and county will treat just as shabbily as everyone else’s.

As a Director of Internal Audit for a financial institution, I've observed the level of safety myself at our branch locations in Los Angeles. We have young female employees walking alone to and from their cars when the branches opens and close. They might make good targets for bad actors and that could result in the company facing lawsuits for not providing a "safe work environment". If they fail to address the dangers right outside of their facility, when there is actual proof that it's "not safe", you "cover your @$$". Smart move Kaiser. Risk Mitigation is what this is.
