    One of my favorite examples of a trans character in media is Victor from The Umbrella Academy. After Elliot Paige came out, they decided to make his character trans in the third season so as to elevate potential dysphoria. His coming out scene is super casual and he has literally no problems transitioning, which is awesome because we need more characters with plot lines that have nothing to do with transphobia. Even when his siblings get mad (and I mean REALLY mad) at him, they never once misgender or use his identity against him.

      That's fantastic! I kind of fell off the umbrella academy sometime in season 2, but I'll have to go back for this alone.

    Being able to hear someone spend over 40 minutes talking about both transfeminine AND transmasculine characters was a surprise and a joy. Our community really has such a long way and I hope that we’ll only be able to keep moving forward from here. There are so many moments you included here that I’ve never even SEEN before and that’s an absolute marvel to me.
    I clicked on the video because you included Kiku in the thumbnail and was extremely happy that you also covered Yamato. I’m totally with you on the Dragon Prince. I love that show, but it always bugged me how the first canonical gay couple was killed off in a flashback, and how they kind of did it again with Runnan and Ethari by having Runnan sentenced to a fate worse than death and Ethari left sad and alone.
    So I was so glad to read about the time and care that the writers took not only into Amaya and Janai’s relationship, but also Terry’s design and characterization. Especially since his voice actor, Benjamin Callins is a trans man, and he also suggested having Terry be mid transition. And apparently there’s even a piece of concept art showing Claudia helping Terry tie up his binder. Please tell me they’re putting it in the next art book!

      Ironically I never found The Dragon Prince’s early lgbt representation bad because it wasn’t just limited to them. The first three seasons has shockingly few adults couples where both are alive and together. Callum and Ezran’s mother is dead long before the series starts, Claudia and Soren’s parents are no longer together, Rayla’s parents received a similar fate to Yunnan, Avizamdum is dead leaving Zubeia alone, etc. I saw it less as bury your gays and more everyone is having a bad time. Either way, glad we got some good couples, gay and straight.

      I'm one of the writers of the third-biggest One Piece fanfic in the fandom. Can confirm, Yamato is wonderful representation for non-passing trans mascs. Even our protagonist Luffy, who is asexual and dumb as a brick, takes one look at Yamato's chest, hears him say "I'm a man," and immediately responds with "Right, YamaBro it is," no questions asked. Later at the end of the arc, Yamato gets in the men's bath while trans woman Kiku joins the women in the women's bath and the author publsihed the chapter this happened during Pride Month! We have other LGBT characters in One Piece, too. Nami is either a lesbian or bisexual, Inazuma is genderfluid, and literally no one in the fandom dislikes Bentham.

    The text above is from the English translation, which is more vague but could still be seen as implying she's trans with the "quite the transformation" line. (It's not as clear as saying medical science is awesome, though.) But I would still say it's implied.

    I love how you talked about Kiku and Yamato, two of my favourite trans reps in media. Being genderfluid myself, I do want to add that while the earlier representation can be problematic, I do genuinely like the character of Inazuma, who is genderfluid and has no confirmed gender at birth so no one can actually point out which, and they swap between male and female without anyone calling attention to it, integrating into the narrative really well. They're also really cool as a character. I know people talk a lot about Bon Clay, so I just wanted to bring up Inazuma as well since I think they feel most similar to my own identity and how I want to be treated.
    A character you may not have heard of is Opera from Mairimashita Iruma-kun who is canonically non-binary and uses any and all pronouns but is usually referred to as 'they'. They also don't have a confirmed gender at birth which I love. In flashbacks of them in high school, they wear both the male and female uniforms and look fairly androgynous. They're also super powerful and have both agency and an interesting personality which I think is key for representation.

    Another good example of a trans anime character is aunt Nao from Skip and Loafer. She is directly mentioned to be trans, and there are a few heartwarming scenes of her niece being very comforting when some randos make offhand comments (little scene, but was touching). As far as i know, in the manga later there's a chapter fully dedicated to Nao's past and how she transitioned.

    I actually like what they did with May. If her first lines in the show were "hello im trans!" it would be much more "cis men writing their first trans character". I'd rather the confirmation is pushed back to a thematical moment than randomly insert it and make it seem like her entire character is just about being trans. I like that we had one season to show her as a character before confirming she's trans, and it was in an organic spot. I know that's how I would insert a confirmation. (Also funny how Nora's outfit in this season is a trans flag!)
    I know some people are ridiculously convinced that there's absolutely zero planning in the show, but it can't be improvised this much, they have a general draft in advance.
    I'm so glad you mentioned Dead End, it's so underrated!
    I love how celeste is unintentionally trans in the most amazing way, Maddie Thorson based the game on her own struggles, but ONLY AFTER FINISHING THE GAME realized she is trans herself. So the game is literally unintentionally trans :D

    • @WritinRealSlow
      @WritinRealSlow  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      To be clear, the problem wasn't that they waited a season to have her reveal it, the problem was that they revealed it on twitter first. The presentation was mucked up. Otherwise, I really do like how they handled her coming out!
      And yeah, I love dead end! I really wish more people were talking about it! The unintentionally trans thing was honestly really cool, and it's proved to me I need to do better research, because I had no idea until people brought it up in the comments.

    • @HotDogTimeMachine385
      @HotDogTimeMachine385 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@WritinRealSlow This is probably a naive reading of the situation, but to me it looks like Kdin was just too excited to talk about voicing a canon trans character (and who wouldn't be😅I'd be happy too, and people put her in a tough spot asking for confirmation, I don't see a good outcome) that she also helped create (she mentioned in a livestream she gave a bit of feedback). I mean this show is a mess all over the place, like how casting your buddies is a regular occurrence. This show only makes sense if you consider it was built as a amateur project by a bunch of friends who wanted to make an anime together.
      Amusing detail: All the Happy huntresses are genderbent from male characters except for May who's based on Maid Marion giving a wink that she's amab.
      Did you know they wanted to make Weiss' season 4 pilot be confirmed gay, but then realized "wait, he dies after one episode... let's not do that cliche".
      Also how is Sallie May's twitter confirmation different from May's twitter confirmation if you don't mind me asking?
      Another thing about nonbinary representation in Dead End: in the comics Courtney uses they/them pronouns, but for the show they had an open casting and since a cis actress got cast they had Courtney use she/her. One to avoid a cis actress play a nonbinary character and two to avoid the "nonhuman queer character trope"
      And not only was Celeste created by a trans woman (who realized she's trans in the process), it was composed by a trans woman, Lena Raine (who also did Minecraft, Chicory, Guild Wars 2 and Deltarune), and artist Gabby DaRienzo says they're queer and use she/they. So like half the people working on the game 😄
      I mean, you should definitely double check all this information if you share it further, but I thought I'd share what I know. Sometimes youtube comments can be helpful haha

    I am really bad about misgendering people, I even misgender cis people semi regularly. For this reason I tend to refer to people by name rather then by pronouns, it doesnt really stand out too much either because I do talk weird anyways. And while we have differing opinions (I didn't like RWBY after season 3, and I have different feelings about Rocky Horror (not gonna argue! its definitely not great)) I am always glad to see other lgbt+/queer creators out there. Keep up the good work!
    Edit: OMG I recognized some of the background song after I finished lmao, I loved that of monsters and men album. found myself humming it without thinking. and GOOD KID! i saw them IRL a while back

    Ok so I know back street girls looks real bad but hear me out as a trans woman who kinda loved it. It explores enforced masculinity by imposing a gender swap on the main characters. One of them rejects the forced feminisation which becomes a vehicle to discuss dysphoria, one embraces it essentially revealing they've been a closeted trans woman all along and the main character gives a first person look into the whiplash of going from be perceived as male to perceived as female (men trying to monopolise her time, not taking her seriously, 'friends' trying to get into her pants etc)

    Now before I say anything else, I will preface this with that I identify as trans/genderqueer myself... but I think a big reason representation is important is that the official definition of trans is terrible. Unless you already believe that gender and sex are different things, its useless. The one and only thing that made me call myself male is my dick. Nothing 'on the inside' told me I was male. I wished I was born female, but that didn't make me less male than my peers. Only hearing trans people explain it in their own words made me understand it, and discover that I felt the same. Representation in fiction is the next best thing.

    38:07 "The twins later confront Tessa and despite her history of caring for them, they ultimately decide to cut her out of their lives as she would still have Tyler sent to conversation camp. And they don't want or need her anymore."
    That statement is misleading. In the game, when the twins confront Tessa about threatening to take them away from their mom, the player has the option of having Tyler tell Tessa she could've done better, she did what she thought she had to, or she destroyed his family. If the player picks one of the first 2 dialogue options, Tessa will accept Tyler's trans identity. Then the game lets the player decide if Tyler forgives her or not. Whether Tessa accepts Tyler's identity and whether the twins keep her in their lives or kick her out of their lives is dependent on the options the player chooses.

    This was great! I like seeing appreciation for good trans rep in media. Barney is such a good character! To add to the anime section, personally I really liked the character of Tooru Mutsuki in Tokyo Ghoul. He is confirmed as trans in the anime and manga and he also uses the masculine personal pronoun "ore". My favorite part is that all the characters respect his identity without any fuss and he gets a happy ending. It isn't perfect by any means (there are some transphobic moments/characters in the show), but it meant a lot to me when I first watched it. (Warning though that this anime is very violent with dark themes, none of the characters including Mutsuki handle their own trauma well.)
    Oh! And Saiki Kusuo from the Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Although it isn't confirmed in the anime, the manga mentions that he was born female as a baby but quickly said "f that" and used his powers to turn himself male. In both the manga and anime it is shown that he can turn himself back into a girl when he needs to (i.e. to avoid being recognized by someone he's avoiding) but he definitely doesn't identify as a girl. And he's aroace (Canon doesn't say so explicitly but I think him saying he's not interested in romance or people's bodies comes close enough to count for me.)

The writers proove they can do proper representation with Claire, the bartender in the AfterLife. Through her side missions and the flag on the back of her truck you find out she's trans and it's not treated as a super big deal, it's not played as a joke, and is partially used to show how much her husband meant to her as he was there to support her through her transition, ultimately making her revenge plot all the more impactful and and gripping.

    My favorite example is Gaty from BFB/TPOT (object show), she's implied to be trans in TPOT 2 where she says "When I like being something, it's because I got to decide it for myself. Like my periwinkality! And my girl... ness." My only issue with that is that it also kinda implies that it's a choice. There's also the algebralians, which are all genderless (Four also comments in BFB about not having gender where they're from). And some non binary characters like Winner, Price Tag, and Profily.
    And don't even get me started on II (/pos). Seriously, I could ramble forever about it. Especially season 3. They did an amazing job with Bot.

    as a non-passing and not out to anyone but my close friends(close friends as in my only two friends, plus my mother) trans guy, this representation gives me a sense of belonging that I really don't feel anywhere else. most of my friends and family are nice(even if most still don't refer to me as my name and pronouns), but none of them get it. It makes me happy to hear about other queer people, it gives me hope that one day people will call me sir or refer to me with he/him pronouns, and one day I won't feel dysphoria every time I speak, and have to go out and talk to people that find the simple fact that I exist strange. sometimes I really wish I was friends with other trans people, so at least someone would understand and respect me.

    however it also makes perfect sense for humans not to fit conservative ideas of gender
    and it would also make perfect sense to use that by showing both and showing a degree of normalcy by showing that from an outside perspective completely removed from any conservative ideas about anything identites that don't fit into conservative worldviews make just as much sense as any other human identity, obviously and any arbitrary exclusion is just ridiculous

    I'm so happy transmale representation has actually started to have a larger presence in trans representation as a whole. As you said in the beginning, transmasculine people are often overlooked when cishet creators want to throw in a trans storyline, and (perhaps as both a cause and effect) reflects transmasculine visibility in larger discussions. I hope this continues.
    On the other hand, I also hope the same goes for transfemme representation. Sure there is more of it, but is it actually....good. Because more focus has been put on transfemmes for longer, there is much more examples of horribly disrespectful depictions (and not true good rep). I'm glad that more genuine care is being put into trans rep, and transfeminine rep.
    I also love that there doesn't seem to be one stencil for the characters in this video. I do think some work could be done to diversify transfemme rep to add some more butches in the mix (not every trans woman is hyperfemme after all), but characters like Yamato who has tig ole anime bitties (and doesn't seem bothered by them) who are still men, and characters like Mettaton who are fem trans guys are very important to me as a trans guy who does enjoy expressing his femininity. I'm also super impressed at how many trans guys are also MLM in some way, especially with the first depiction (Coach beast) explicitly saying "I am a trans man, and I've always been attracted to men" in the same scene.
    Also side note, now that season 6 of the dragon prince has been released (also, spoilers for season 6 of the dragon prince) but another trans character has been introduced, and she has a smaller role, and her "I'm trans" dialogue is a little confusing, but it is present in her media that she is trans. Its also the gayest season yet.
    Anyway, I leave a long comment cause this was a delight of a video. Thank you!!

    Really great video! It deserves so much more views! I'm especially happy that you mentioned, "Tell Me Why", it's not nearly as popular as I wished it was.
    I can attest to representation mattering a lot. If it weren't for the anime "Hourou Musuko / Wandering Son" and the manga "Our Dreams at Dusk" I would never have thought that transition was even possible for someone like me. I grew up with a family that had a quite narrow view on what a Trans person was and what kind of future awaited them. Most TV shows I saw that had trans people always depicted them in a certain way, like the producers were trying to put them through absolute hell to farm Trans Trauma for ratings.
    When i saw these 2 works, I started to realise that I wasn't just a super feminine guy, that I was a woman. Seeing my struggles and experiences in these works really made me feel so validated and now I've been happily living as a woman for 5 years now!

    Sex work is a major part of being queer. Erasing that part of our communities is just wrong and sounds like purity culture. With the non-humans being queer it is even more of a problem to me when the entire main cast are human or "human enough", despite the majority of the population not being humans. Because if it is established that *anyone*/everyone is or can be non-human, a character like that being queer (namely trans or nonbinary) raises wayyyy fewer red flags, at least for me. Where I noticed that the most is the Owl House and She-Ra, both of which I love, but the entire main cast is very human, while many side and background characters are not. Cannot complain about the queer rep in the owl house though, that stuff is great imo.

    this is just random personal thoughts, i'm not trying to make an absolute statement or anything btw; but personally as a trans person, i always connect much more with imperfect realistic trans characters. note that i said 'characters' not 'representation'. a trans character can be bad but their trans representation good ofc. it's so much more compelling when they feel like a real person, when they're allowed to have flaws and their own reactions, including towards their own transness, without having to reflect and represent the 'correct takes'.
    obviously i understand it's not only complicated to pull off, but it's a complicated predicament itself. bc i'm the last person to dismiss the power and influence --both positive and negative-- of representation, and any specific representation depends heavily on the context (ex. you can make a trans villain if you have other queer and trans characters and it's clear their transness is irrelevant to their villainy, but if it's the only queer character it sends a bad message whether you like it or not), and the less representation a minority has, the heavier the weight on the shoulders of each to be good representation.
    i know in reality there's all this to consider, which is why i'm talking about in ideal here. for example, personally i find dead end paranormal park incredibly *boring*, and the trans representation in it as well, bc it's so designed to be performative, perfect and inoffensive. it's so pointless to me. i'm a trans man btw. obviously it's great that it exists; representation for the sake of representation is MUCH better than no representation at all and i could never complain about well intentioned rep, and representation aimed at non-queer people for normalization and understanding and acceptance absolutely has its place, but that's my personal real experience. that's the point of this comment actually, just to notice that interestingly as a trans man i found the trans rep in dead end paranormal park uninteresting to death. which again has nothing to do with thinking it's bad rep or it shouldn't exist or anything
    on the other hand i vibe much more with characters like yamato, despite not being great trans rep, bc he gets to represent being a no-op trans man who looks like This, with huge boobs, and as a man, and that's so cool. my personal favourite trans rep that i find the most compelling is tatsuki fujimoto's togata in 'fire punch'

    However, I think that a trans character being sexualized and fetishized are two VERY different things. And sex worker characters don't even have to be sexualized to begin with! That seems like such an odd and strict rule to have

    • @WritinRealSlow
      @WritinRealSlow  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      See, the reason I said "just don't fucking do it" is because it's never done with history or reality in mind. That aspect of the character is never actually explored and it essentially just turns the character into a one-off joke at the expense of actual trans people. I would LOVE to see an actually well-written and researched trans sex worker, because they're a big part of actual LGBT history, but people never do that. It's always a minor side-character, usually only appearing once and very often as a murder victim.
      If people put actual work into it, it could be done well. But they don't, and I don't want people to be lazy about representation, because it matters. And there are a lot more trans stories to be told than just "the sex worker." People need to do better.

    For trans representation in anime, I want to mention Alluka from hunter x hunter, she's the younger sister of Killua and she is trans girl as Killua refers to her as his "sister" and adresses her by using "she/her" etc. while other membembers of their family use "it" or "he" (don't take my word for the "it" part though as I'm not entirely sure), but it is highly implied in manga and maybe in the anime as well though I'm not really sure so again don't take my word for it. Anyway this was an amazing video, thank you for making it. 💜💜

    As some one who is under the trans umbrella and loves the dragon prince Terry is a sore topic for me, i love him as a character but in one of his fist scenes he picks a flower with the colours of the trans flag and remarks on how he likes the colours. this isn't necessarily bad but it happens in one of his first 2-4 scenes if my memory serves right and it just rubbed me the wrong way. personally i feel it was kinda unnecessary but go check out the show! its really good :)

    If you want a good representation in anime, I also recommend Zombieland Saga, one of the main characters, Lilly, is a trans girl, her backstory shows that she prefers to be a girl and died of shock when she discovered that she was growing facial hair. her father respected her and even the other characters refer to her as a girl. many say she is a fenboy but she just refers to herself as a girl, and fenboys have no problem revealing that they are boys, so in my opinion she is trans and many agree with that.

    • @WritinRealSlow
      @WritinRealSlow  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I did consider talking about lily honestly, but I was running on depressed fumes and I just didn't have the energy to fit in every character I wanted to talk about. I'm thinking about making another trans rep video in the future (probably for pride month?) so I'll cover her in there.

    Here to see May and clear up things about her - volume 8 script was already written by the time volume 7 was airing and she first appeared. So her "reveal" scene was most likely already written by the time Kdin shared the info. And as one commenter stated already - who wouldn't be excited to share information about the character they're voiced?
    The reveal itself always felt organic and clear, it lays out facts as they are without falling into the... ugh, whatever high guardian spice tried to do
    So yeah, as a rwby fan i will be here defending May's rep. The writing in this show get too much flack tbh, speaking as a long-term watcher. It has flaws and down sides as every piece of media has, and some storyarcs are.... leaving a lot to be desired. But May is not one of them, for how minor of a role she had.

    • @WritinRealSlow

      I never said she was bad rep, I said they could have and should have done better. • @sunnysunsins
      @sunnysunsins 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WritinRealSlow It's not about the rep itself, but the bad faith argument that her scene was "only" made as a shoehorned last-minute addition, when in reality it was already written by the time her first appearance went live. I was following the fandom news closely during that time and i remember when work on v8 script was announced and discussed. Assuming a scene was only added as an afterthought is a classic case of "rwby-bad" bad faith argument, which in this case is completely undeserved and i'm here to correct that record.

      Which part? Being trans? Sure it is, biology proves that trans people share more similarities with their chosen gender than cis people. (You just have to move from basic biology to advanced biology) Biology and statistics points to bimodal distribution distribution of elements, so minorities like trans people easily exist. Trans, nonbinary, third gender people have always existed throughout history and throughout different cultures. (You have to actually read about more than just surface history) And EVERYTHING shows that supporting trans people is better then trying to convince them they are sick. (You just have to listen to doctors, trans people and compare trans people who are allowed to be happy vs trans people who are not).
      It can be hard reading about history and biology, but it's worth it to support people who just want to be themselves. And honestly you don't have to read anything, you just have to be kind.
