But the truck is trying to shift into 2nd and fails. If it was a safety switch the truck would not try to up shift. The ECU thinks everything is fine but somewhere the signal is just not being sent to the solenoid.

@@PvtPapa exactly, the output is lost on the ECU. I’m sure there is someplace that could fix that, but 4k for the module and I’m pretty sure that is just the price for the controller, that is not including the cost of having a CAT tech reprogram it to the truck. This is the exact reason why I hate computers, they are nothing but a shitshow! If he could take the controller out and get it apart, I would guess he could find a burned up solid state relay on the board.

They are very reliable when working correctly i weigh in on the scales with 100000+ pounds with full load of slag. we extended the the beds up 4 feet so u can haul more material. Also on 2nd note they are a death trap with no working ac the air flow is trash in them with limited window movement. @@AndrewCamarata Caterpillar also offers automatic retarding control standard on the 725, 740 Ejector and 740 GC. It is moving toward automatic retarding control as standard on all of its ADTs, which means taking the lever out of the truck. The ADT understands if it is on a grade and how much payload is onboard. Based on these inputs, it selects the most appropriate gear and uses the most appropriate level of retardation. “The operator only has to take the foot off the accelerator; that will engage the automatic retarding control and standard automatic downhill-descent control provides security on grade and eliminates the guesswork in shifting and applying service brakes while descending. The operator matches the gear to the grade, backs off the throttle and lets the transmission retarder manage the descent safely, while helping reduce service brake wear, operator fatigue and maintenance costs. In tough traction conditions, the interaxle differential lock transmits 50% of available torque to the forward axle and 50% to the two rear axles, simplifying operation. In addition, it can be engaged on-the-fly while slipping for smoother navigation of tough job sites.

So I think the computer is working and is not interlocked. The shift solenoid likely has it's own relay, maybe on the computer board, or outside the computer that could be causing issues.

The more likely case is the ECU is shared between several different configurations of truck, and you need it programmed to work correctly with that specific engine/transmission/sensor set. After all, an ECU from a Ford F150 isn't the same across all models even of the same manufacturing year. The price however is a little bit of BS - charging for mileage to the customer site, but they all do it that way.

Hey just want to give a "heads up" for watching Andy's channel: If you're like me, I skip all over the dang place on watching videos. Being a former coal/surface miner (ret) I like to watch a lot of dirt moving and mechanic work. So I usually look at the titles and skip to the most entertaining, for me. DON'T! You can't do that on his channel. He does so much more in these videos than the title contains. When I say that Andrew has more content than any other show, I mean it. I watch them all! Diesel Creek, Letsdig and his good friend Jesse Mueller (he's really good too!) He's prolly the best so far, in my opinion anyway. His subscribers attest to that. 1.14 M! He's a mud slinging, dirty handed, videographer who has really captured the masterful art of keeping his content entertaining at all points. One minute he's going break neck down a dirt road and the next he's figuring out which diode is bad on a plug. WTH! If this were a chick flick, you'd be crying one min and laughing the other. Bahaaaaa! He's a GoPro Pimp!
Anyhoo........ I found the best process is just go to his channel and binge watch in sequence till you need a switch in subjects Lol That's my two cents!
I promise, I do not know this guy. Just like his videos!

Ive recently rebuilt an auto & it certainly wasn't a transmission fault or clutch packs. When those go it will still shift but you'll rev like you're in neutral. Id service a valve-body before i pulled a transmission out. Id clean and air-check solenoids before a valve-body, but in that truck's case id look at some of the programable features. I know its possible to set a CAT so it stays in first for site safety. Also, the little flash into 2 but doesnt shift is exactly what happens when this mode has been set.

The really great thing about your shop Chad is that you made it deep. I’ve seen a lot of guys that build their shops and just as deep as a garage. I helped build a shop for my best mate and we designed it so that we can put in a lift and on the second bay we set it up so we can install a mezzanine. Now he’s on a budget just like you so a little bit at a time. But it’s soooo going to be worth it. Keep up with the videos. Your channel is tied with Diesel Creek. It's seems crazy to me that you can't access the "codes" from the ECM to see what's preventing the shift into 2nd like you can with a 3rd party car scanner (likely a sensor is telling the ECM that something is wrong inside the transmission). Right-to-Repair on farm and construction equipment is a real problem. I just hope the previous owner didn't snip the "Check Engine Light" to hide the problem....

Andrew, I have a Porsche 911, it has a Bosch ECU. My top was leaking during a bad storm and the drivers side was flooded inside, where the ECU is under the seat...a p-wrench friend took it apart and cleaned the contacts and tracers up and it worked perfect since...Porsche also wanted a lot for the ECU. I have owned several Caterpillar machines and the parts are not cheap by any means, and in many cases Cat doesn't have the parts anymore either. This is to say, open your ECU, clean it all up and look for any obvious corrosion, you might find you don't need that hot wire anyway...but touche' on the fix, it works.

    HEY ANDREW
I have enjoyed your videos for a long time.
after watching for quite a while I believe i can help you with one of your on going situations with your equipment. ( JUMP STARTING )
My shop foreman was always having to jump long parked equpment, trucks etc and was getting frustrated in what it took sometimes to gain access the batteries,so he decided to mount plugs ( the heavy duty industrial equipment battery pack recharging plugs ) on each vehicle externally easy access but out of the way and through the grill of the service vehicle. So from that time forward when ever something needed a jump he pulled up to the vehicle pulled out his 15 foot long jumper wire ( made from the heavy duty charger wire and a plug on each end) put one plug into the service vehicle plug and the other in the equipments plug and charged/jumped the battery/batteries and never having to raise a hood or unbolt and open battery panels
WELL WORTH THE TIME AND EXPENSE OF PLUG INSTALLS
    something to think about
but the biggest thing my foreman thought was " Why the hell didn't I do this sooner?! "

I have told this to dozens of people. One of my neighbor drop 1000 dollars on new batteries for equipment when I clearly told him to just buy some small solar panels and install them. For years he would jump start a lot of that stuff yet he never did install solar panels. Another neighbor has installed solar panels on anything that might sit for a day or 2 outside and has had great luck along with being able to start everything pretty darn easy.

    • @LesNewell
      @LesNewell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Solar panels work great. Apart from the convenience of always having charged batteries, they pay for themselves by making the batteries last a lot longer. Just be aware that some cheap panels can discharge the battery in dark conditions. Make sure the panel has a blocking diode to prevent this.

Cody runs like he's training for a full 26 mile marathon haha. Also, I really like that hi vis hoodie/jacket you were wearing.
