That show was amongst the worse ever shown on TV. People really had low standards to watch poor and destitute women literally beg for some very basic goods. This show is so much more classy and a time capsule involving one of our greatest showmen.
Dick didn't think much of this series. In fact, he said he was so embarrassed at being the host, he auditioned for all available parts Broadway had to offer......and though the show was cancelled in January 1959 {which Dick was more than grateful when that happened}, he finally got the lead in "Bye Bye Birdie" in 1960.
You mean he felt performing with Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie was more fulfilling than watching women listen to eggs as they shake them?
@@fromthesidelines - Now that you mention it, he did appear a tad uncomfortable in many spots. Wasn't this show in its format a sub-variant of "Queen for a Day" or something?
*Everyone* in the acting profession started somewhere. Judd Hirsch appeared in a TON of commercials before he established himself as a leading man {and the star of "TAXI"}.
You bet it was! The network was determined to compete with CBS and NBC that fall, and created a daytime schedule leading into "WHO DO YOU TRUST?" and "AMERICAN BANDSTAND"- which initially looked like this: 11:00 DAY IN COURT 11:30 THE PETER LIND HAYES SHOW {with Mary Healy} 12:30 MOTHER'S DAY 1:00 THE LIBERACE SHOW 1:30 local programming 2:00 CHANCE FOR ROMANCE 2:30 local programming 3:00 BEAT THE CLOCK 3:30 WHO DO YOU TRUST? 4:00 AMERICAN BANDSTAND 5:30 THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB/WALT DISNEY'S ADVENTURE TIME {Tuesday/Thursday} (R)
Does any or all these shows exist on TH-cam or anywhere in some archival form? It would benice to see that entire schedule since I was not born around that time (I had come into the world about a year later).@fromthesidelines
And in early 1959, they added repeats of "THE BOB CUMMINGS SHOW" {"LOVE THAT BOB"} and "THE GALE STORM SHOW" as an inexpensive way to fill that schedule (through 1961).
ABC, in those days, WAS the "third network," after all - they were putting anything and everything up against the "hits" NBC and CBS had "back then" . . .
Happy Birthday to Dick Van Dyke! Glad he got out of the recent set of forest fires in California. Always glad to see such important archived footage.
A kinder, gentler version of Queen for a Day.

What a lovely birthday gift for Dick Van Dyke, and for all of us.

Was this part of ABC's "Operation Daybreak" strategy, I ask?

Part of ABC's entry into daytime programming in the fall of 1958.

Dick Van Dyke is giving his all, but this is the lamest show.
