These were the second version of 3 types on the airheads... according to clymer. These were replaced by fuel hose out side at 90 degrees to straight down type as final style. I have these on my 75' R90/6. Your vid really helped! Btw, that plastic cap- the on, off, reserve written on it? You can get it from Max BMW. A european company bought the original bmw molds for the part and Max BMW works with them. Otherwise no longer available from BMW. They crack easy- be careful- the knurling on the nut is what holds them on, they just press over it.

I’m glad I found this! I have a fuel leak issue on my right carb with the petcock presumed off. I’m going to verify it’s operating

Thank you for this video. I just rebuilt my left side petcock and the video helped to show me how to put it back together again! The selector is notchy and really just wants to turn counter clockwise, but after 45 years of use, the metal dimpled rings are worn a bit. 1974 R90/6.

Thank You for posting this - I followed your video and successfully overhauled petcocks on '76 R60/6

Put that plastic shield on last only after you're sure you like the amount of lock and smoothness in the handle. Found that one out the hard way because those plastic writing caps are very difficult to get off without snapping in half. Once you put it on you pretty much just want to leave it on. The detent feeling on my handles was almost completely gone from 43 years of wear. If you have a small dimple punch you can re-dimple the dimples a little bit on the piece that has the dimples. If you do it right you can get the locking positions feeling back. Mine has the original spring in it too and it's really strong- which probably contributed to the wear a lot. Try using a modern spring that's less stiff if you can find one and you can get a smoother feel when you turn the petcock. I dimpled mine with a watchmakers staking tool since I own and am trained to use one, it worked quite well, redimpled the original part and got the original feel back. I could just go buy a new set of petcocks, but why waste $120? Especially when they will not be the original style parts that were really on this bike... I guess little details matter like that to some people like me.

thanks also for the referral to capitol and max bmw. i need a headlamp bucket for the 79 r65...i pulled the fairing. any tips on who might have that parts?

I went with an aftermarket bucket from Revival down in Austin, I think. Not sure where to source an OE version other than maybe eBay.

@@secessioncycles1357 thanks, i'll tell 'em you sent me. i'd resigned to going aftermarket. the old stock parts are brutally spendy. lordy!

excellent video. am reassembling the petcock on a 79 r65 today. this is the part on that. thanks. any reason you wouldn't use a little grease on the o ring and threads to assure a smooth reassembly?

No reason other than I didn’t think to do it. Not sure if it would help much as everything was pretty smooth as it was but I can’t see how it would hurt any.

Hi your video really helped. Thanks! I have a R100s from 83 and I'm having tons of problems with the electrical. Do you know any good forums where I can ask? Or if you have the time it would be awesome to talk for 15" and maybe you can teach me a lot about this bike. It is very hard to find info and it has very strange things going on hahaha.
Thanks again for the video ;)

For those that gave up on their petcock rebuild due to this error, my apologies.
Feel free to check out Ross’ version of the video with the proper pronunciation.
