EATING PACIFIC ISLAND FOOD @ Lola's Island Shop / Polynesian Samoan Tongan Mukbang Food Vlog Review

  • Have you tried food from the Pacific Islands before? Come and try Tongan and Samoan dishes at this island takeaway shop in Sydney's South West!
We tried dishes like lamb buns (steamed and fried), sapa sui, lū, lamb curry, taro and banana, raw fish (ota ika), fried chicken, BBQ lamb ribs, crackling pork and somehow made room for desserts too! When the islanders tell you they can eat, believe them LOL. Big love to Aunty Lola and her family for taking us in for lunch time 😄

Australia & New Zealand shipped a lot of cheap lamb cuts to the Islands that we didn’t eat. The Islanders grew up with it & found all sorts of ways to use it including buns ( Chinese influence ) & curry ( Fijian Indian) . They are fatty cuts now politely called breast of lamb but once upon a time it was lamb flap. It is the off cut from cutlets when they put the mid section through the band saw . I see Islanders buying it in the Vietnamese butchers in Marrickville . Great example of cross cultural influences.

@@SydneyFoodBoy Your welcome . I assume lamb breast was shipped frozen in 20kg boxes straight from the processors .Aussie households didn’t eat it unless like my family they were processing their own lambs. Trimmed heavily & cut along the rib they go pretty well on the BBQ . I think it’s the same principle as beef tongue ,Aussies were to spoilt for choice ,so it’s shipped in 20kg boxes to Japan . You see it cut super thin in packs for grilling over charcoal .

I went to try this out after seeing this! Drove nearly 1 hour to get there. the fried lamb bun was fantastic I must admit. However the taro and banana was a little too firm for my liking, not sure if it’s eaten this way or it might be my drive home that has dried up the banana and taro! The Otai was also great, I think the kids have some islander in them because they finished the lamb curry all to themselves and didn’t leave me any! Will definitely give this shop another go and maybe eat the food while I’m there next time.

Most of the food you have are Asian food. Like the pork bun and chop suey. If you wanna try the real island food, you’ll eat, fish with coconut, taro, luau, vaisu, fa’ausi, vailolo, chicken, panipopo, puligi, panikeke and so forth. Luau, taro and fish are my favourite dishes growing up. Lamb are transported to the islands and we make yummy dishes out of it. Even turkey tails. But mainly we have chicken, pig, cows, seafood, taro, yam, green banana, breadfruit. Most of our delicious meals are mixed with coconut. Coconut is our mayo, milk, and our seasoning 😄.

Sapisui translates to 'chop suey' and comes from the Chinese immigrants that came to Samoa in the late 19th century. They were brought over by the Germans (who first colonised Samoa) to work on our plantations. Chinese Samoans are a big ethnic group in Samoa (around 25%) that have been there a long time, and because of that a lot of our food is influenced by China. Pork buns, soy sauce based food..our red dried plum lollies! Big difference I think between Samoans and Tongans. So it makes sense that you've tried similar food at home, because a lot of our food comes from Chinese people. That's also why you'll find a lot of Samoans with Chinese sounding last names, and why we have sayings among Samoans like - we refer to straight hair in Samoa as Chinese hair e.g I inherited Samoan hair but my siblings have the Chinese hair (believing somewhere along the line we have Chinese in us). As a Samoan person I love Chinese food.

Also very funny that you pointed at the taro and said it tastes like a dessert...when I moved to Australia and found out that a lot of Asian cuisines use taro as a sweet food (with coconut ) I felt shocked like...wtf. That should be savoury! The equivalent of going to another country and finding out potato is a dessert food served with tapioca lol.

Yeah I see a lot of similarities with Filipino and other Asian cuisines which have some sort of Chinese influence
