    When the government tells you don’t worry and only have a weeks worth of food....that’s your signal to buy all the more. Glad my pantry is all set. Nothing worse than an empty dinner table. Hope everyone is prepared. Things are going to get even worse

      You can buy a bag of rice for $1 or 2 cans of veggies. It's the small steps over time. Everyone should be doing this, should have done this. I have a small budget, but I do it. If I have a few extra bucks I pick up an item or two and so can others. Unless you are homeless it is doable.

    • @edefyinggravity
      @edefyinggravity 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @tiger Davies most people could spare a few dollars if they just made smarter choices. You can get stocked up for less than $5 a month per person. Unless you are homeless, you can find a way.

      @tiger Davies But when chickens--hams--turkeys are on sale you can freeze them-cook later in the year and have many cheap meals-sandwhich meats and stock . Save a few dollars out for when they go on sale mostly at holiday times.

      @tiger Davies Having a pantry saves you money. You buy things in bulk when they are on sale for a really good price. Eventually you work to a point where you just go buy the sales each week. Whats not on sale you use from the pantry stock till its on sale. It's a way you can beat the grocery stores at their own game.

    I'm proud to say that I've been watching your channel and some prepping style channels, and while being in crisis mode financially and not able to prep very much, I was doing what I could. I invested in a bidet a few months ago, which turned out to be a happy coincidence. I learned how to make my own bread, biscuits, and tortillas. I have tons of canned and dried beans, enough rice to last about a month or so, a little ground beef, some canned/frozen veggies and some random things. I'm also six months pregnant, so I have been extra impressed at my ability to still satisfy my cravings for brownies when all I had was black beans. Thank you for all you guys do, I can't believe we're living through this. People are insane.

    I am so grateful that my Grandma Hazel taught me DEPRESSION panty tips and the farm recipes they used during that period. She called her pantry her Larder. I also have some of her cookbooks. They also contain recipes for homemade soap! I started shopping the first week of March. Then I was on school break, so I had the stores to myself and was able to get canned chicken breast, tuna, flour, canned goods and milk to freeze,etc. I need to mention that I turned 70 this month There are three of us 70-somethings sheltering in place on our family farm.
    Because we are farmers...we are all working! You and your husband did great shopping! I see so many folks who do not know how to cook. This may be a good time to tune into You Tube and take some lessons...

We are spoiled here in this country, I never take for granted the insane amount of choice we have when it comes to food here in this country even though I was born here every day I'm grateful that we have the ability to have such a choice, these bare shelves are what third world countries have to look at every day of their lives, as long as I get to eat I'm happy...

    Wow it still blows me away how people are panicking and buying everything in site., I’ve always stock up on food. my pantry and cupboards are full.my fridge and freezer is full. Since Saturday I’ve had to go back to my local grocery store which is a cross the street from my apartment. To buy potatoes.eggs.and fresh fruit and vegetables. I always have 2-3 packs of toilet paper on hand whenever there is a sale. I and today I finally got potatoes and extra flour and eggs. Because if need be I can make my own bread.pizza dough and pasta. So I’m all set .. I did not buy bottled water.last summer I bought a big Brita container that’s sits on shelf in my fridge.. Today our Prime Minister has declared Canada in a state of emergency.and when the prime minister decides to put the country in quarantine.I am all set..

  • @johnyt101
    @johnyt101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This should be common sense, but...
    Most people don't know how to shop for food. I picked up a few weeks, or more, worth of food from what was LEFT on the shelves. I wanted to share my strategy in case this drags out for an extended period. Once you get the food, make sure you can keep it. A not so subtle referemce to home security.
    There are more grains than just rice, wheat and corn. There is barley, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, oats, flax, and more. All very healthy. And just as easy to prepare. Keep the foods that come in an envelope for dire emergencies.
    Can't find sliced bread? I saw croisants for breakfast sandwiches. I saw whole sections still full of bagels and english muffins. Plenty of cream cheese, peanut butter and preserves also. Can't find flour or don't have much left? You can add coconut flour to wheat flour and get 20-30 percent more. I saw several packages of coconut flour at a Kroger store of all places.
    I like to hit the asian and latin american sections too. Flour torillas, refried beans, terriyaki and korean BBQ. There is always curry, A good way to spice up meat/chicken and potatoes or rice. I do a lot of cooking in my wok so asian foods are good. (Get cooking oil, I prefer olive oil and it seems to be on the shelves still.) Try some of the indian foods. You may like them. I also found some some shin ramyum in family packs in the asian section, when the crappy stuff in the other aisle was all gone. It is spicier and each package serves two. Speaking of spices, Get some seasoning packs. Taco, Fajita, meatloaf. They have more uses. Also those instant gravy mixes are great. And they can't seem to give give them away. Get plenty of garlic. It goes with anything and is healthy. Minced if you can find it (its just easier).
    Italian is good too. But people seem to think you can only use spaghetti. fettucine, rigatoni, or macaroni. There are many more pastas on the shelf and they are all still pasta, just different shapes. Found whole wheat spaghetti and fettucine still on the shelf. Unless you have a serious gluten issue it is good. And if you can't find the jars of sauce, find something on TH-cam. And remember pasta sauces come in white and red. The red sells out first usually. And when you are in the pasta section, grab some egg noodles for soups. May want to see if there is beef or chicken broth avaiiable. Bullion cubes can work too.
    Meats? Everyone is leaving prime cuts on the shelf for hamburger. There are a lot of ribeyes, fillets and other expensive cuts. So some terriyaki or korean bbq sauce is great. Pork is good too, but bacon is in short supply. Found some pork loin steaks because the pork chops were gone. I got the last pack of seasoned pork sausage to go with my pasta sauce. If you can only get sirloin or round steaks, you can still tenderize it or cut it up for a stir fry or a fajita. I usually add chicken or pork to fried rice and somrtimes beef. Oh and ground Chorizo for the burritos. or even in an omelet,
    Must mention fish and seafood. Tilapia is a good choice, especially if you can get individualy wrapped fillet packs. Salmon is available, if you don't go overboard, it is pricy. I have become quite fond of the catfish nuggets that come frozen in a big ziplock bag and great with Adobo seasoning. The single serving tuna and salmon are good the foil envelope are good for quick single servings. And there is never a shortage of sardines.
    The corn bread was sold out, but all those boxes of corn muffins are basically the same thing and you can put them in a square pan. All kinds of cake mixes. What is cake? A sweeter bread, even without the frosting. I also happen to like honey bran muffins which many people don't care for, you all can keep the sold out banana nut and blueberry. The sugar content is high and they grow mold unless you keep refrigerated.
    The produce section is always full. Potatoes last a fairly long time. As do sweet potatoes and onions. Get tomatoes that aren't quite ripe and leave then on your countertop. Fresh vegetable are easy. I got cilantro, carrots, bell peppers, green onions, yellow onions I chopped them up , bagged for single meal use and stuck in the freezer.I still need more pico de gallo and green chili. Many more if you want them. Frozen vegetables? It seems a lot of people don't like brussel sprouts, lima beans or edamame (soy) beans. If you don't mind, find a way to spice them up.
    In short, use what you have, don't give up because you can't have what you want. I hate jelly beans ans fruit cake but I will eat them.
    Think outside the box. Even grasshoppers taste good with enough chocolate.

    We live in an RV right now (not in a park) so we always use bottled water. As soon as we found out people were going crazy we got RV TP and a couple cases of water because we don’t have constant running water. Our Kroger has 3 item limit on everything and they are applying it across the bread department. I brought 2 bags of bagels, 2 loaves of bread, 1 bag of hamburger buns, and 2 bags of hot dog buns to the register and the cashier made me choose 3.😬. On a good note, the lines were short and the stocking levels were good with the exception of a few holes like flour. Plenty of TP though.😁

Carbs instigate a feeling hunger after the spike drops so eliminating them one won’t feel the need to eat as much & can do with less product. God bless you.

    We have an autistic child in the family who only can tolerate one kind of a drink product (not milk). It is only sold in 2 chains here in Florida, Publix and Walmart. We (I am his aunt) have been scouring the local stores and thankfully found 3 gallons of this product the other night. He does drink water, but we will all continue to look for this product as long as it is something we can get for him. The real problem is that it is in the cold drink aisle only. Not like Hawaiian Punch which is sold at room temps.

    • @peggyhall5363
      @peggyhall5363 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the name of the drink? Is this an allergy or he just only wants this drink? You probably said, but how old? Should things go really south... & this is a health issue looks like only water. It might be wise to limit the amount in a day. If neccessary make little freezer pops with him helping and he can have one a day to stretch it out.

    • @edefyinggravity

      @tiger Davies doesn't work that way for autistic people.

    • @normamason3185
      @normamason3185 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edefyinggravity With autistic people (ours is 7 years old) they have heightened senses of some things - texture, taste, color, etc. and are very aware. Bubba is 7 and he is bright, but nonverbal. IF we could substitute chocolate milk or yoohoo or something like that, it would be done and the family would have choices as we enter this crisis.
      Peggy Hall, they do limit the amount he can have in a day, but at the end of the day, or week or whenever what is on hand is gone, it's gone. And it makes a difference to him. You mentioned freezer pops - he just doesn't know what to do with them, and again, think texture and coldness - can't do it.
      Tiger Davies - they transfer from the original container to his cup without him seeing what he is getting. It would be like giving me homebrewed ice (which is the only thing I drink) or Peak Tea or even Arnold Palmer tea (which I tolerate). I know the difference and so does he.

    • @d.vaders1178
      @d.vaders1178 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inhawaii4941 We all should ALREADY have our minimum two weeks natural disasters supplies at hand. Living in Seattle it is always a threat so we have the 55 gallon trash can emergency kit ready but that is SURVIVAL level preparedness. Our families best friends are in Kona and Maui so I know that most Hawaiian people are serious about being ready to weather the storms and earthquakes also because of the very real threats every day there. This however is simply a shelter in place situation. My house has endured a 2week situation each and every year...typically snow or severe wind storms. In 2007 we went 15 days without power. Day 16 the power came back on and day 17 it went out again for another 14 days. We were buried in 4 feet of snow at 17 degrees and could not drive out for 3 weeks total. We were trapped, literally with no help available. We lived in the house until kerosene ran out then moved to the rv as it had propane. We now have generators and a wood stove and 2 cords too much wood each year. I know what country living is about. Too many have no clue and no backup measures in place. We are not SHTF preppers but are prepared to live in a tent in a blizzard if an earthquake happens during this virus event. We are country folks who have experienced it all and know that help will not come to us for some time. I just don’t see the need for an added large stock of 16 oz bottled water and a years worth of Costco tp. It has to come down to rationing in survival scenarios. If an earthquake happens, do people have a bucket and bags or a shovel to make a toilet? Do they have a camp burner and lp fuel canister to wash for proper virus hygiene? The answer is most likely no for 80% of Americans. What I hope is that this occurance will engage people to ACTUALLY make a 2 week survival kit (like they have been advised to do repeatedly) and discern the difference between survival and shelter in place. I have found our weakness...I am decidedly disappointed in our ice cream and vodka preparedness. I have two weeks ice cream supply left but NO toppings and only half a bottle of martini magic elixir then I have to drink scotch. That will change going forward. Blessings to all. I for one pray that no one needs the two week “survival” kit for any reason, let alone now.

    I do want to say just one thing about the water. I agree completely, most people can drink tap water with no issue. In my house, however, we cannot - or at least my husband and a couple of our children can't. We live inside city limits, and the tap water is treated with chlorine, which causes them to have kidney and breathing issues due to being allergic to the chemicals. For this reason, we cannot use bleach in our home either. So I do buy bottled water for them to drink, or for the kettle or drink pitchers that they use regularly. I also buy bleach alternative cleaners, and we all tend to use gloves when cleaning with clorox or lysol wipes - just to be cautious for our skin. I love your tips though - you guys are amazing!

    That's funny what meat was left in your store, I live in Alabama and went to the store today and found frozen turkeys at $1.49 lb and corned beef briskets.

    I don't know about everyone else, but I buy water because I take two or three bottles of water to work a day. There's no room in our fridge for me to fill reusable bottles, and that's just something else to wash when I come home tired from a possible 10 hour shift.

    Having stocked up as the virus news got worse, I have restricted myself to my home as of about a week ago. I am not seeing anyone, and have to stay away from everything. I did place an order online for pet food and pet supplies. Fresh items are the hardest, as they cannot be stored for long periods unless you have a very large refrigerator, and I don't. I have a teeny one. I wish there were some outdoor farmers markets so I didn't have to go into the stores and risk getting infected. I wish I had a burka with wrap around goggles.

    That turkey at $1.49# made me jealous. That was a great buy and could feed a family of 4 meat for a week. We went for our regular shop 8 days ago and I was laughing out loud the whole time at what products were bare shelved. I even had to say out loud “Are you #$@&’&@ kidding?” Kraft Mac and cheese, chef-boy-r-dee, Compleats and top ramen offer NO nutritional support for ones body to prepare to fight an illness. Crazy. Absolutely Cray-Cray!

    While I love your humor and do agree with almost all you say and am thankful you're putting the information on here, in answer to your question as to why some of us buy bottled water, some of us do it *because* we use our brains. Some of us have wells and that means if the power goes out, we have no water (well pump runs on electricity), I started a month ago gradually collecting about a 2-week supply of water and a month or two of food, supplies, and the medications (90-day supply of prescription meds plus some over-the-counter ones) that we may need in case of quarantine or disruption of various services. It was easy to see a month ago that this would become widespread and then to understand that if Italy and China needed to be shut down, it could happen here, too, and that we would ALL need to stay out of public as much as possible and/or be quarantined at home for 2 weeks at a minimum. At no time in my fairly early preparations did I panic or take the last or almost the last of anything like people are forced to do now. As soon as we can, we'll get a generator for future outages/crises. I will also use the couple of empty containers I have here that would work for bottling our tap water for future use (after boiling it, letting it cool, and adding a couple of drops of regular unscented bleach). For those without a Bible, biblegateway.com is one of many web sites where they can read it, and they can also listen to it via many TH-cam sites if they prefer those ways.

      As stated in the video MOST not ALL water is safe to drink in the US. If you need it get but if you don't you're being ridiculous.

    As for the plant based substitutes not being bought well needs must at times, I like them myself as I'm not a big meat eater, I eat meat may twice a week.
    Bloody madness if you ask me!

      If it smells like bleach let it sit out open for 24 hrs. and the bleach will evaporate.
