- Discussion on the topic of linework and improving the look and feel of your linework by always thinking about lighting and form.
Commentary was done while drawing/recording, so that always winds up hurting the art or insight, but at least it keeps it lively.
I have a lot of really dumb jokes constantly flooding into my head when I'm trying to make these.
Its been 7 years wtf
It’s been 8 years but how dare you not tell us those jokes
It’s been 9 years I need to know
8 years, get back over here
9 years now, still waiting.
Drawing like a painter
painting like a sculptor
next is sculpting like a writer
Make it so, teacherman!
Landon Walls i
Old comment I know
But thats not even impossible - If you're a story artist you want every element to tell your story and youd definitely consider it when doing anything :D
Sculpting like a mathematicial
And then writing like an artist.
Cooking like a basket weaver.
If we draw like painters and paint like sculptors, how are we supposed to sculpt?
+Daniel Chapman Like drawers ? Duhh...
+Dingle Pooper first open the draw then close it.
Like a baker.
Like an artist 😂
Daniel Chapman like an engineer?
"This is how a kid might draw an eye, when they are young" 90% of the students I get to teach when they are like 14 draw a DOT, maybe with a circle or an egg around it.
That's where I hang up portraits upside down for them to draw what they see, not what they know... to blow their minds about how they can draw.
Using the book "drawing on the right side of the brain by betty Edward" aren't you ?
Im 12 and I got so passed when I heard that I've been drawing for 5 years and for most of it I've focused on eyes its my favorite thing to draw
"drawing what you see instead of what you know is there."
Instead of what you THINK you know is there
I keep coming back to this lesson... I can't thank u enough man, this seriously has helped me a ton: this lesson kind of changed my life for me in terms of drawing now: like I am noticing values on everything, and its helping me to draw more loosely. thank u!
"and if you draw anime there's some kind of nose or whatever"😂
It's funny, cus there's no nose in anime.
@@cestarianinhabitant5898 Depends on the anime.
More like depends on what century and decade the anime is from.

heh, i dunno what you're talkin about, they breath through their mouths

This is probably the lesson I most consistently forget - given enough time I'll always fall back to drawing every line for no good reason. This is a great reminder, thanks!
Man, this is such a simple concept and yet for some reason it never occured to me to think this way in drawing. I was thinking of drawing and painting as separate things. Thank you so much.
"This is maybe for people just starting out." I've been using lost edges as a style choice not based on light direction for a lot longer than I care to admit... The fact that you can impart such a huge change in the quality of my work with these short videos is invaluable...Thanks Sinix
Sinix: This is how a kid might draw an eye
Me: oh, okay...
One thing I learned to do sort of on my own through trial and error is to skip around. Try to visualize the full picture first and skip around drawing lines here and there until it comes together like a puzzle. This is good to do if you have a super vivid imagination like me. It will look abstract at first to an observer, but slowly it pulls together. The only thing is you can't have any distractions at all or you might lose the visualization, I really need to be in the flow to draw this way.
He just sounds happy with what's he doing C:
Zeesarh Wolfcrest yeah. it's almost like I can hear him smiling. makes me feel all fuzzy.
@jimipatterson It's still there as the first video on the channel. I probably won't get around to redoing them for awhile. The next videos are going to be about concept design.
i fr thought this said ‘drawing like a printer’ for like 5 minutes
astersp 🤣
I read it first as "drawing like a panther" and I thought it was a vid about speed tips
8 years later but still helpful
I just realized that i can keep my lines more loose by...taking off my prescription glasses!!
I can't get lost in details if i don't see any!! 😂
genius!
Everything makes sense now! This video makes the process I go through in my head -when I draw or paint something that is 3d- much more organized. Thank you for explaining it the way you explain it!
You are one of my favorite artists on youtube. Not to compare in a way to sound like im saying you are better than others. I can connect with you and you are very friendly and open towards teaching people and different artistic styles. This video is great
Thanks for the tut, Sinix! As a beginner, this is very helpful for me. :)
huh, "focus on where the shadows might be, don't worry about connecting the lines", that's interesting
You've inspired me so much. Your drawings are beautiful and full of, well, energy. I'm gonna go draw now.
that's because you have a big imagination, I also do the same that's why I decided to study drawing again to enjoy drawing funny stuffs that come to my mind
you're very talented, keep going and absolutely your future will be great, you're one of my favorite Artists on TH-cam, all respect
oh and thanks for all the great tutorials! i've learned a lot in a short span of time
this video is sooo helpful too!! sometimes I will hit kind of an artist block, like this week I was a bit... but seeing this video really, really inspired me. thank u! I love how u show how simple the lines and things start out, but just adding in the values completely change it. I really like the finished drawings at the end
Ech!! I love your lines so freaking much!!
Mmm, that crispy 2011 audio quality
5:00 it's avatar aang!
thanks for the great tips! >u<
Incidentally, 6:31 looks a little like wireframe sculptures
DeepSeaLugia i was looking to see if anyone would say that 🤣
Glad I found your channel. You're enjoyable and informative to listen to.
This is a great idea, I'll be keeping this in mind from now on. Cheers Sinix
ive listened to this like 10 times. i have it looping, I will understand this...
Law 3rd You can understand it if you don't try to apply it.
Just stop thinkink flat, always, while drawing, have in mind forms.
I know its been 4 years since you've typed this but how is your art journey coming along? its really crazy to me when I see all this comments from different times and I just cant help but think how far you guys have gotten and its kinda inspiring in a way.
@@bcillus Hey bro can you summarize this video for me? I don't understand English that much. It will be huge help.
@@animerman2017 I think what sinix is trying to say is to not directly draw the eye as it is but draw it in a way that light is already affecting it, like when theres a strong light on top of you, your eye area will be pretty dark because eye area is underneath the forehead area, so when you draw the eye you use large black shapes to signify those shadows while detailing in a way that the few light that do show is seen. im sorry if im not clear enough im trying to understand it too myself hahaha
Wow this was in 2011, its 2019 now and you have only continued to grow as an artist
that era was cool, style wise
@loathiesome Good call on the ears. I seem to make a lot more mistakes when I can't focus my whole attention on recognizing those things.
oh, your first drawing of the face through the shadows was trully insightful, thanks!

nice! this was really insightful! ive been trying to get my drawings to have more variety and intention to them so thanks!
This is great, thank you very much! I've been trying to work out how to do my lines, especially digitally. This is great, thank you!
nice video Sinix. Maybe you could do some more fundamental videos showcasing how you achieve this ability to "draw with shadows/lightning in mind".
this is preety mindblowiing... maybe i just have to reorder all my illustration process :'D
I love your vids man...seriously!!
This was 9 years ago, sinix sounds so different 😭😭
You make it look so EASY!
This is how i draw! I am so much more at home with a brush pen then a pencil. I like being able to have my marks do multiple things at once, like the tip and bottom of my blob both have edges instead of drawing an outline.
@jimipatterson By the way, it looks like you're doing a lot of cool directing stuff on your channel. I like checking out stuff like that! You might want to tone down all the black on the channel page though, just so it's more inviting.
this is actually perfect. *_* i was doing so much wrong!!!! thank you you helped so much!!
You freekin virtuoso. Great channel btw
never touhgt about it this way when doing line art, great video
that's the point I should start drawing but I keep watching more of your videos.
cool vid, love the end video face- the angry imma-gonna-eat-yar-heart dude, this long like resembles a scar and it rly on place even though it was probably random
Fun fact: if u look at the face hard enough, you can make out a kid dancing in front of two floating rocks
THIS IS MY JAM
How can you create that brush in PS? That would be really really helpful. Nice vid BTW
thank you! it really broadened my view!
You should do a tutorial just on shadows, light direction, and when to use highlights, good vids as always.
this video gave me a new understanding of how to draw. thanks.
I love your videos so much bro
Very good piece of advice. Thank you.
your very helpful! :) I laughed when you drew your first sample for drawing in shadows cause it looked like the face had a nose bleed ha!
Thx Sinix!
And man, you're sick good.
i like that this just popped in my recomendations
Same haha
Yeah 2019
At last some fresh ideas. Good job.

That is amazing👍thanks
love your faces, style. wow! :)
Thank you for making these, god damn you should teach at an art school. My teachers never explain things as well...
Now could you do a video tutorial on Painting like a Drawer?
thanks!
Kidding.
Seriously though nice tutorials. You're great.
Man, he went OFF on anime for a second there...
this is great sinix!
This was really helpful! Thank you. :-)
The jokes are great :D makes it seem more personal, and pleasing to watch.
Hey, Sinix! What kind of pen/brush/tool you use in this video? I like how you make thin at the same time think lines. I cant find in in Painter 12.
same here unbelievable it would took me years figuring that out on my own, im so grateful for the internet!!!!!
Holyfuck. You just gave me the underlying secret I've been trying to figure out. Holy fuckity fuck man. Watching those who are used to painting paint, they do not often do this because they already know how /they/ paint or understand it and junk. So this... just thanks man.
I know this is that silly question that people ask as if they will be able to draw or paint like a professional if they have it but just looks nice, where did you get this brush and is coral painter better for line or is it just that brush? I have barely any experience with it, I always use photoshop personally, but I'm going to get painter and see what its like, just see what comes from it. thanks for the videos
Trying to learn how to paint in 2024👏🏼
This video made me see drawing in a new light! XD pun intended.
Thank You :)
I wish sinix post stuff more often
Hi, I have a question Sinix.
Don't know if you answered it in the video because my speakers broke but
what resolution have you been using for this and how much ppi ?
Also, how is your brush set up ?
Especially I want to know is it a round brush or a flat one, and if flat, do you have any rotation applied to it in the settings or what, because i can't get that effect with my brush that you are using, i have preassure sensitivity set on flow and I use flat brush.
Thanks :D
@sinixdesign ha, on the iphone it wasnt available. im in the middle of new mexico on a shoot right now and dont have a laptop!
how do you draw like that while creating from imagination? like the design phase, you are still figuring out the character using references, in this phase i dont want to worry about lighting, but just the design and form. So would you say that it would be more beneficial to start with line sketches and then aplying big shapes on top of that and define the lighting of the scene? it is so amazing seeing people starting like this already from the begining like they already have a crystal clear image of what the final piece should be...For me lighting should be something you put on top of an already stablished line drawing.
i came back here after your recent uploaded video.
Great detail
more of these my man
11:45 beautiful
holy shit, just had a breakthrough watching this
@sinixdesign yea, i change it up a lot. i was going for an unobstructed, "no information - just watch the videos" look. ive got a new music video coming out sept. 1 that i want you to send to you. its rotoscoped - every frame was digitally painted. when i was prepping for the video months ago, i had been watching all your tuts. so, of course, if im allowed credits, ill be thanking you! talk soon!
sadly phothoshop doesn't respond this well to pressure sensitivity like corel painter
I usually have trouble still
I can draw traditionally quickly and such and am conformable
I need to learn digitally and I am slower and such. Is there a way to trick or teach myself to be as comfortable?
And stuff like that 👨🏻💻
hi i had a question. any advice for controlling your brush strokes while painting (digitally)? some artwork, including yours, seems to have style and control in every brush stroke. kind of like how 90s comic books used lots of crosshatching, instead of just filling in shadows with random lines. when i paint, i feel like im randomly filling the forms out, and it doesnt look interesting. how can i fill my art with brush strokes that have stylish "motifs" like some of the better artists out there?
Do you feel old : nah
This video was posted 12 years ago : ._.
Draw like a painter, paint like a sculpter, therefore... draw like a sculpter :D
What program do you use to do your digital art?
I think it's Corel Painter?
thankyou
how do i get a brush like that in photoshop?
Lol that's hilarious! =) Cool man =)
