Ray Ban Sunglasses THE BEST!

  • The vintage RayBan sunglasses in this video were produced in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s. Some of the best Ray Bans ever made were made during this timeframe.
    The history of the Ray-Ban Aviator dates back to the 1920s, when new airplanes allowed people to fly higher and farther. Many US Army Air Service pilots were reporting that the glare from the sun was giving them headaches and altitude sickness. In 1929, when US Army Air Corps Lieutenant General John MacCready asked Rochester New York-based medical equipment manufacturer Bausch & Lomb to create army pilot sunglasses that would stop his men suffering headaches and nausea caused by the intense blue and white hues of the sky, a new kind of glasses was introduced. The prototype, created in 1936 and known as 'Anti-Glare', had plastic frames and green lenses that could cut out the glare without obscuring vision. The sunglasses were remodeled with a metal frame the following year and rebranded as the 'Ray-Ban Aviator'. On May 7, 1937, Bausch & Lomb took out the patent, and the Aviator was born.
    In 1939, Ray-Ban launched a new version of the aviator called the Outdoorsman. It was designed for specific groups such as hunting, shooting and fishing enthusiasts, and featured a top bar called a "sweat bar" that was designed to catch sweat from falling into the eyes. They also featured temple end pieces to distinguish it from the standard aviator. A few years later, in the 1940s, Gradient lenses were introduced. These were mirrored lenses which featured a special coating on the upper part of the lens for enhanced protection, but an uncoated lower lens for a clear view of the plane's instrument panel.
    In 1952, Ray-Ban created another classic style, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer, this time with plastic frames. They soon became popular in Hollywood, and can be seen on James Dean in 1955's Rebel Without a Cause. The now-standard G-15 green and gray lenses were introduced a year after the Wayfarer, in 1953. I just today picked up my first pair of Ray Bans, the Justin model. They are amazingly light, comfortable sunglasses with great lenses. For me, a nearly 15 year old guy, they have the perfect style to match my everyday activities, plus the carrying case is excellent. I prefer the way these look to the new wayfarers because of there more rectangular design, and because they fit me better. Picked them up for a mere 99$ with tax at a local surf shop. Truly a great pair of shades.

    Great Video. I am from Europe and I am a big fan of Rayban sunglasses. I prefer those with the plastic frame, because they are light weight plus it doesn't irritate my skin as the metal does when I wear them for a long time. The model that I have is RB3526

    Hey Craig, nice video. I have a vintage pair of Ray Ban Aviators that my uncle gave to me. I do not know how old they are but they do not have the script in the upper right lens. Instead, they have B&L very faintly etched into the left lens by the hinge. They are black framed, with a circle in the middle where the lenses connect. They have the standard grey/green tint. They are totally scratch free and have a very high quality non-polarized picture. He gave them to me because he has other pairs and does not like the "looped" flexible ear pieces (they sort of loop around your ears). I do like them though and unfortunately the nose pieces broke off. I need to get them repaired/replaced.
    I also snatched up a used pair of New Wayfarers from a bud of mine for way cheap, they are also polarized lenses, great quality. Love Ray Bans!

      Yep, pre-1980! I did some research on my shades. They are the "Bullet Hole Shooter" style from the 70s with the G15 lens. Similar to the pair Johnny Depp wore in "Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas", minus the Gold frame/Amber lens.

    Hello everyone,
    Here is what happened to my first sunglasses: At first I bought vintage pilot sunglasses which fitted me very good. They costed me $50 and were no Ray Bans. I liked the fact that they had a silver mirroring, which protected my eyes even more and made me look cooler. Somehow when I cleaned them with a glasses cleaner (which came with the sunglasses) the mirroring layer came off. Eventually I rubbed all of it off so it wouldn't look weird. Later on they fell in saltwater as I was on a wharf from which I was going to row out to my yacht and whilst I was packing my stuff into my dinghy they fell in the water which was roughly 2 metres deep. I got them out of the water but forgot to clean them off with freshwater and the screws rusted which made it extremely hard to open up the 2 earholding things. So I decided to go to a special glasses shop and the man who worked there told me that 1 pair has hydrophobic glasses so the water would immediately come off and they apparently have 7 layers of sun protection. They are polarised from every angle and fit me excellently. However they cost $200. Let me know what you think.

    I am a Ray Ban fan and I dare someone to tell me I spent too much on them while driving their car that they have 500-600 payments on(I paid cash for my car and have had it since 2005). I paid cash for my ray bans at least and in the grand scheme of things...ray bans do not hurt the bank that much as long as you don't go crazy buying them up.

I can see a description in the top of frame saying Bl Ray Ban USA and also the support for the nose has the logo BL, in the right side has l2823 and left side Rayban made in Italy CE is that enough to say it is original?

    What irritates me is that they speak of Small, Medium, and Large, yet those descriptions do not match the available lense sizes .
    The 55mm is indeed called Small and the 62mm is called large.
    BUT...the 58mm is ALSO called a 'Large Aviator', which of course should be 'Medium Aviator'.
    I have no idea why that is.
    The size difference between the 58 and the 62 mm is very noticable.

    • @WaltKurtz68
      @WaltKurtz68 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Indeed.
      It's not that I accidentally ordered the wrong size, you always check the size in millimeters before you buy of course.
      Yet I hope Ray Ban will correct the "Large Aviator" to "Medium Aviator" on the 58s some day.
      Would make more sense.

    Hello, I got a Ray-ban 3025 L2823 "metal large aviators" black sunglasses I got in an airport few years ago. However big problem with the temples. I have been adapted it many time to the optician in order to fit my face and do not hurt my ears, however nothing to do with it... By the way I don't have that big face and I always wear other sunglasses brand without any problems. Does any one have a suggestion? I love ray-ban lenses anyway, especially the 3030 Outdoors-man or aviators. Is there other aviators model much more appropriate for me maybe?

    I have two pair of Ray-Ban Generals that I bought new in 1987. The have heavier Barvura 24k gold plated frames compared to regular aviators and an exclusive RB50 lenses (ambermatic plus gradient mirror). I've been wearing one pair and the second is still mint in box. I paid about $100 per pair discounted from $125 and see used ones today for $600-700 and new in box over $900. I keep my second pair in the safe. I will never own Italian Ray Ban Aviators. I also own a few pairs of regular and Sportsman style American made Ray Ban Aviators with G15 lenses and one with amber for shooting and driving at dusk.
    I also own a few pairs of Randolph Engineering Concorde style sunglasses. Concordes look like Ray Ban Aviatiors and Randolph Engineering Aviators have more rectangular lenses (as issued by the Air Force during '60s - '80s). RE sunglasses have heavier frames than standard Ray Ban Aviators and optical quality ground glass lenses. I find them superior to regular Ray Ban Aviators. If you wear Ray Bans a lot, you'll be constantly tightening the temple screws. Randolph Engineering actually flare the bottom of each screw to stop them from backing out. RE is American made.
    American Opitcal also makes Aviator style glasses with glass or polycarbonate lenses. THey are also American made and less expensive than the current Ray Ban and Randolph Engineering equivalents. I don't own a pair but know several people who wear tem. They are excellent quality and replacement lenses and temples are easy to get.

    Ray Ban are owned now by Luxottica after luxottica forced them out of the market by not allowing them to be sold in Luxottica owned stores.. (LensCrafters/pearls optical, Sunglass Hut...) When RayBan's stock plummeted the brand was bought by Luxottica, discontinued for a year, then reintroduced by Luxottica, Italy for 3 time the price Bausch and Lomb were selling them for. No thanks, I'll stick to old Ray Bans or US made eyewear sold in US owned companies.

    Ray Ban makes some of the most hideous sunglasses I've ever seen in my life.
    I've always thought Oakley made some of the best looking glasses as far as style goes. I own a few pairs.
    I'm buying my first pair of Maui Jim's this week. Ive read they polarize both sides of their lenses for clarity and color that can't be beat. I found one Maui Jim design I really like but I'm not a fan of many of their frame styles either.

    • @jasonduhamel7813
      @jasonduhamel7813 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Craig Shipp That's cool. Your entitled to your opinion but there's no denying that out of 10 people wearing sunglasses, the majority, I'm willing to bet, are wearing Oakleys

    • @MrJc9600
      @MrJc9600 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jason Duhamel The majority are probably wearing ten dollar sunglasses from Walmart as most people wouldn't spend this much on sunglasses. That being said, I generally prefer Ray Ban for my sunglasses. I like Oakley, but I wish they would stop using those cheap plastic lenses that scratch super easy. I have a pair of Wayfarers from 2012 and a pair of Gas Cans from 2013 and I wear them both all over the place. The Wayfarers are still in immaculate condition with not a single scratch on the glass lenses, but my Oakley's lenses look like they've been through hell and I don't beat them up that much. The Oakley's are light and plasticky feeling, whereas the RB's have weight to them and feel quality. I bought them both from Sunglass Hut so they're both legit, but I think Ray Ban's are just better quality than Oakley's.

    • @jasonduhamel7813
      @jasonduhamel7813 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just can't seem to find a Ray Ban frame that appeals to me in any way. I just got a good deal on a pair of Oakley Polarized Flak Jackets 2.0 at an Oakley Store. The color scheme I wanted (black with a silver logo) was 25% off and I traded in an old pair of original half jackets for an additional 25% off. They retail for $200 and I paid a little over $100 with tax after the discounts. Right place at the right time because Oakley's are rarely ever on sale. I upgraded to their new Prizm Daily Polarized Lenses a week later for another $110. You should really check those out. They're phenomenal. Best lenses I've seen so far. Clarity is amazing and the colors just pop off of everything.
      As far as scratching lenses go. It's usually the people that treat their glasses rough and are careless with them, that are the ones that complain. If my Oakley's aren't on my face, they're in the microfiber bag and then put in the hard case. There's no in-between with me. I've never had an issue because for that money, I take good care of them, and that would go for any high end brand.

      Jason, you can't buy style. Either you have it or you don't. B&L Ray Bans, American Optical and Randolph Engineering are the real deal, made in the USA suppliers to the US military sunglasses manufacturers. The aviator style is a classic, period. Oakleys, not Oakley's, are fashion statements for poseurs.Plastic lenses are crap. Crown mineral glass is the best and as close to zero distortion as you can get. Plastic lenses, no matter how good, strain your eyes. Polarized lenses are great for snow or water but impossible for flying as some aircraft windshields are polarized. Electronic screens in both aircraft and cars are also polarized. They will look black when seen through polarized glasses. Bad enough when you're driving, really dangerous when flying. Try acrobatics with polarized lenses.. Roll the aircraft things get brighter, then darker, then lighter.

    Ray Bans are like Manchester United. people jump on the bandwagon because of the name and "it's fashionable". Man U aren't the best, neither are RB's. Don't be a sheep and look for something else.

      Both Maui's and Dillon come immediately to mind. OK the latter may not have the vast styles of RB but personally, I think the lenses are superior, not by a lot but still better. Oakley's will run a good race against RB as well.
