This scene came out to me recently. I’m not in a relationship yet, but I know I want to stay at where I am and build a family. I’ve gotten the same advice from others about how I should let go of certain preferences and be less selfish so I can find a guy. I love Meredith’s response. I know that feeling. There may be other better places to live, but your work, life, family and everything else is “here”. I once met a guy who said “the reason why you can’t move to a different location (with him) is because your sisters are your baggage”. That moment, I knew that wasn’t the right person.

As much as i agree with Meredith, i agree with Derek too. When he gave up the job just for Meredith, he is also setback his career and this is once in a lifetime opportunity. He deserves a second chance to make medical history after Meredith ruined his. When he first gave the job at first for the family, mer keeps trying to prove derek, he makes the wrong decision. She never once talk about it without fighting with him. I get that she gets her own stuff with Maggie and all but she always forget that he is her husband, and as derek always mentioned, she always make decision with Christina, not him all the while derek is depressed as i deemed fairly fair after giving up a once in a lifetime opportunity , and all the time when he needs meredith the most, she is gone she gets drunk and spend time with alex and her friends instead of making the time to talk with derek. As much as everyone sees derek as selfish, meredith is equally as selfish as he is. If the table turned, meredith got the job in dc, derek would not have any second thought he will moved with her. Finally someone said it. I always see people bashing Derek in these comments like he's the worst person ever. Like it's his fault that he's amazing at what he does and got such an amazing opportunity. Meredith almost killed this man's career with killing his clinical trial and when he got the opportunity to go to Harvard and her Boston so they could both do something great she refused to leave. Derek put his career on hold for years for Meredith. Even after they got in that plane crash he wanted to leave but she never did. It was always about her and she never wanted to compromise. People don't see Meredith's selfishness, only Derek's lol. This show should've ended in s10 with Cristina leaving and both mer and Derek leaving DC together. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that was presented to him. Mer was unfair.
I don’t necessarily agree. When Mer had the chance to go to 2 different programs right before the plane crash, he was trying to force her to pick Harvard Bc he would get a grant, not Bc it’s what SHE wanted to do, but Bc Harvard wanted HIM. The only reason she was accepted was Bc of him. I don’t think he ever really valued her career. Like in the early seasons when Mer asked him for help with HER trial, he stole all of the credit, he made it seem like he was the mastermind even tho the trial wasn’t his idea, nor was he the one to perfect the injection. He was only needed in the trial Bc she needed a Brian surgeon and he was the best there, but he stole the credit and had the AUDACITY a to say he didn’t need her to complete it. He never cared about her career it was always about him, and she didn’t ask him to stay, she knew he was unhappy and HE was the one always bringing it up saying like “oh well I turned down this amazing opportunity so the least you could do...” which caused a fight based off of inviting both Maggie and Richard to a dinner. As for Meredith being distant, she has abandonment and commitment issues concerning men. She can’t help not trusting him sometimes Bc of his past actions. S1 she finds out he has a wife, S2 he convinces her that he is leaving Addison and that she has nothing to worry about, S2 he says the only reason he hasn’t signed the divorce papers is Bc he needs time to wrap his head around the fact that he is cutting her out of his life for good, but that he will sign. S2 Meredith finds out he STILL hasn’t signed even tho they were on a date. S2 she gets vulnerable and begs him to choose her and he doesn’t show up to the bar. S2 he calls her a whore for trying to move on/ sleeping with George S3 Mer chooses Derek over Finn but Derek says he needs time to be single S3 Derek kisses Rose S3 Mer finds out he kissed Rose and then the following day talks about how much he wants to build a future with her, she doesn’t trust that he actually wants her so they breakup S3 Derek starts dating Rose, proving Mer right about her suspicions S3 they get back together but Mer attempts suicide due to her being in a rough patch, Derek breaks up with her for being too damaged for him. S4 Derek tells Meredith that he met a girl in a bar and that if she doesn’t move as fast as he is in their relationship he can find someone who will (implying that she means nothing to him if she won’t give him what he wants from her) S4 turns out the girl in the bar was Lexie so she (understandably) gets insecure about it, Bc why wouldn’t she think Lexie might take him from her. S4 Mer doesn’t commit to their relationship Bc she’s scared he will leave (again) so they break up S5 Derek steals the credit for MEREDITHS TRIAL S5 Mer asks him to move in, then he proceeds to kick out her roommates (her only family) S5 Derek has been acting weird so she assumes he might break up with her S5 Derek couldn’t save prego lady, gets depressed, leaves Mer without saying anything (just like her dad did) but she cuts him slack. Richard tells Mer Derek was going to propose, she goes to the trailer to try to help him, he calls her a lemon (among other things) implying ONCE AGAIN that she is too broken for him, she AGAIN cuts him some slack Bc he drunk and depressed S5 Derek proposes S5 Mer stands up for a child being abused, Richard gets mad, Derek isn’t too fond in taking her side but finally does. S5 They get married on a post it S5 Mer tells Derek Richard has been drinking, he corners her, saying he’ll rehire Izzie if he’s cheif (putting her in a terrible position and he knows it) S6 Derek gets mad at Mer for telling Owen he has to confess to Teddy abt not recommending the job, she tells him to stop telling her things if he doesn’t want her to know S6 Mer gets excited about a surgery she’s performing with Nelson, Derek shames her for interrupting his meeting for something that “small” THEN he proceeded to steal her surgery BECAUSE she was excited about it, not that he wanted it, he wanted to make her miserable, Bc he wasn’t enjoying his time as cheif S6 Mer finds out she’s prego S6 shooting happens S6 Mer miscarries S7 Derek is speeding and showing up to work drunk S7 Mer leaves him in jail and goes to the wedding S7 Derek shows u too work smelling like pee and is mad at Mer for leaving him in jail S7 Mer tells him she miscarried S7 Get legally married S7 try to adopt Zola S7 Mer screws with trial to help Adele and Derek leaves her. S7 Derek says Mer would be a bad mother and that she is just like her mom. S7 Derek calls her selfish S8 Mer steals Zola Bc she’s scared she’ll be taken away I think I’ve said enough. But from what I know about the first 10 years of that show is that it was a toxic environment and it had really long hours. I think it's so telling/intentional that she uses the words "I gave up that piece" in relation to Derek getting what he wanted(career) in spite of her own wants/needs(career). Christina used the same phrase in relation to Burke who "took pieces of me" to make her into someone he wanted to be with. Both men played a part in the way these women tailored their goals and ambitions in order to "Have it all" and in the end had those decisions thrown in their faces by those same men. Derek never made the amount of sacrifices to his career, personal life, or personality that Meridith did in order to be better than her mother was as a parent, wife, and surgeon.

Totally. They were great as lovers, they were great as newlyweds. The chemistry was immaculate. They cared for each other so much. I still remember how Derek was worrying about Meredith all the time in the first seasons. But then he started to take pieces of Meredith. One by one. Sometimes he took more and sometimes less but he always did it. And Meredith was willing to give all of her to him. And then Derek went too far. Like here with the job. And Meredith woke up. She realized that her life is more than just loving Derek and being by his side. She started making her career. She was doing a fantastic job. She still loved Derek. But Derek whose idea of their relationship was always different from what they had now started to re consider his life choices. And almost cheated. And that's when i was like "ok, this is totally over". Yes, similar things he did before as well and not even once. But this time it was for sure, not some sort of confusion. He did with Mer almost the same thing that he did to Addison. I can't remember a single time when Meredith was selfish. She never valued herself and her feelings more than her family's and friends' feelings. Because she was never taught that she is important. Derek tried but did it only when it wasn't inconvenient for him. Both of her parents treated her like crap and then she got into medicine where the main concept is that the doctors are the machines, they don't have rights to be tired, to have feelings, to be emotional. That they have a right to have a family but will barely have time to spend on it. Meredith was always willing to help others but everybody makes mistakes especially when you think you MUST help everyone no matter what it'll take. And everytime there were consequences of her actions there was absolutely no mercy for her, never. When Meredith made any mistake everyone but Christina treated her like as if she was pure evil. Patrick, Katherine) already moved on and show zero interest on coming back to the show, even Katherine who (rumored) supposed to show up to do the last scene, she ended up never appeared. I think they have they own room in their heart for greys anatomy the show that make them shine in the old days, but i think with their age and just the situation of this world is almost impossible for them to come back. But in terms of Derek putting it as a burden on Meredith that it’s her issue that she sees herself that way is wrong, she’s right she was stating a fact but deep down inside, I believe that part of Derek did still believe himself that she was just the intern he fell in love with and that he still saw her that way: Back in season 4 when Derek told Meredith that he wanted marry her, have children, build them a house and have a life together and she reacted like she wasn’t ready for it, he said she was still just the intern then. S4 Mer starts a trial that SHE AND ONLY SHE came up with. She asked for Dereks help, as she needed a Neurosurgeon on the case. She perfected the injection alone and saved the last patient. She did it and he STOLE every inch of the credit and bragged about it. S8 Mer has the choice of going to 2 different hospitals for her fellowship. Derek pressures her to pick Harvard, because he would get a grant. Not because it would be good for her, but Bc he would get 2 million dollars to fund his research. He actually made it a point to say that she HAD to choose Harvard for him. He has not once gave a crap about her career. He even wanted her to be fired in S7, he actually broke up with her Bc she wasn’t fired. He never gave 2 shits about her or her career. He just wanted somebody who wanted him. He knows how to take advantage of her and he did it on a daily. He never apologizes when he does anything wrong hand he shames her constantly. It wasn’t about the portal veins, it was about Derek undermining her worth. She finally got the courage to stand up for herself and so he leaves and cheats with the first chick to show interest. The city you live in doesn't make you good at your job because Derek always got great opportunities in other cities (because if you're good at your job the rest will follow) but turned them down for Meredith because she wanted to stay. This one was a once in a lifetime opportunity after she almost killed his career and made him turn down other great opportunities. Mer was selfish many times before and in this instance but people only see Derek as selfish. But to each is own opinions I guess.

I’ve gotten the same advice from others about how I should let go of certain preferences and be less selfish so I can find a guy. I love Meredith’s response. I know that feeling. There may be other better places to live, but your work, life, family and everything else is “here”.

When Mer had the chance to go to 2 different programs right before the plane crash, he was trying to force her to pick Harvard Bc he would get a grant, not Bc it’s what SHE wanted to do, but Bc Harvard wanted HIM. The only reason she was accepted was Bc of him. I don’t think he ever really valued her career. Like in the early seasons when Mer asked him for help with HER trial, he stole all of the credit, he made it seem like he was the mastermind even tho the trial wasn’t his idea, nor was he the one to perfect the injection. He was only needed in the trial Bc she needed a Brian surgeon and he was the best there, but he stole the credit and had the AUDACITY a to say he didn’t need her to complete it. He never cared about her career it was always about him, and she didn’t ask him to stay, she knew he was unhappy and HE was the one always bringing it up saying like “oh well I turned down this amazing opportunity so the least you could do...” which caused a fight based off of inviting both Maggie and Richard to a dinner. S1 she finds out he has a wife, S2 he convinces her that he is leaving Addison and that she has nothing to worry about, S2 he says the only reason he hasn’t signed the divorce papers is Bc he needs time to wrap his head around the fact that he is cutting her out of his life for good, but that he will sign. S2 Meredith finds out he STILL hasn’t signed even tho they were on a date. S2 she gets vulnerable and begs him to choose her and he doesn’t show up to the bar. S2 he calls her a whore for trying to move on/ sleeping with George S3 Mer chooses Derek over Finn but Derek says he needs time to be single S3 Derek kisses Rose S3 Mer finds out he kissed Rose and then the following day talks about how much he wants to build a future with her, she doesn’t trust that he actually wants her so they breakup S3 Derek starts dating Rose, proving Mer right about her suspicions S3 they get back together but Mer attempts suicide due to her being in a rough patch, Derek breaks up with her for being too damaged for him. S4 Derek tells Meredith that he met a girl in a bar and that if she doesn’t move as fast as he is in their relationship he can find someone who will (implying that she means nothing to him if she won’t give him what he wants from her) S4 turns out the girl in the bar was Lexie so she (understandably) gets insecure about it, Bc why wouldn’t she think Lexie might take him from her. S4 Mer doesn’t commit to their relationship Bc she’s scared he will leave (again) so they break up S5 Derek steals the credit for MEREDITHS TRIAL S5 Mer asks him to move in, then he proceeds to kick out her roommates (her only family) S5 Derek has been acting weird so she assumes he might break up with her S5 Derek couldn’t save prego lady, gets depressed, leaves Mer without saying anything (just like her dad did) but she cuts him slack. Richard tells Mer Derek was going to propose, she goes to the trailer to try to help him, he calls her a lemon (among other things) implying ONCE AGAIN that she is too broken for him, she AGAIN cuts him some slack Bc he drunk and depressed S5 Derek proposes S5 Mer stands up for a child being abused, Richard gets mad, Derek isn’t too fond in taking her side but finally does. I think it's so telling/intentional that she uses the words "I gave up that piece" in relation to Derek getting what he wanted(career) in spite of her own wants/needs(career). Christina used the same phrase in relation to Burke who "took pieces of me" to make her into someone he wanted to be with. Both men played a part in the way these women tailored their goals and ambitions in order to "Have it all" and in the end had those decisions thrown in their faces by those same men. Derek never made the amount of sacrifices to his career, personal life, or personality that Meridith did in order to be better than her mother was as a parent, wife, and surgeon.

Totally. They were great as lovers, they were great as newlyweds. The chemistry was immaculate. They cared for each other so much. I still remember how Derek was worrying about Meredith all the time in the first seasons. But then he started to take pieces of Meredith. One by one. Sometimes he took more and sometimes less but he always did it. And Meredith was willing to give all of her to him. And then Derek went too far. Like here with the job. And Meredith woke up. She realized that her life is more than just loving Derek and being by his side. She started making her career. She was doing a fantastic job. She still loved Derek. But Derek whose idea of their relationship was always different from what they had now started to re consider his life choices. And almost cheated. And that's when i was like "ok, this is totally over". Yes, similar things he did before as well and not even once. But this time it was for sure, not some sort of confusion. He did with Mer almost the same thing that he did to Addison.
I can't remember a single time when Meredith was selfish. She never valued herself and her feelings more than her family's and friends' feelings. Because she was never taught that she is important. Derek tried but did it only when it wasn't inconvenient for him. Both of her parents treated her like crap and then she got into medicine where the main concept is that the doctors are the machines, they don't have rights to be tired, to have feelings, to be emotional. That they have a right to have a family but will barely have time to spend on it. i dont think its fair for mer to compare their situation to ellis and tatcher how ellis just drags thatcher around and find a job for thatcher. ellis dint love thatcher but derek loves mer derek cares about meredith . i love mer but i think mer is jealous of derek and i hate that it has to be like that cos mer loves derek and yeah many times mer felt inferior to derek bec she was an intern who married a hot shot neuro surgeon and that derek had his downs when he treated mer badly like when he dint sign the divorce papers w Addison. but there were lots of times also when derek was so good to mer like how he defends her protects her ans believes un her like how derek said that meredith seldom makes mistakes and how Meredith will be an amazing surgeon and how he felt lucky that meredith was with him in neuro. he sees meredith and her abilities, he loves her and is always protective of her. mer also had times when she was good to derek and times when she was bad to him. they both have ups ans dons but basically they love each other. in this time that derek has a once in a life time opportunity mer ahudnt hve fought him, they shud not be competitive w each othe they shud support each other
I just started watching the series, on season 2, so correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like Meredith is always right and Derek is always wrong?

Yeah, I’m on Meredith’s side, she’s right, she proved herself when she got into Seattle Grace (before it became Grey-Sloan Memorial) as an intern and before met and fell in love with Derek, but her career and what she wanted to achieve and make a name for herself had to be on her own triumphs and effort not by taking a job in DC because Derek got an incredible once-in-a-lifetime promotion and pulled some strings for her to be there with him; that wouldn’t be her succeeding and making her mark on her own terms and effort, and it would just prove that she’d only be the intern who he fell in love with and vice versa.
But in terms of Derek putting it as a burden on Meredith that it’s her issue that she sees herself that way is wrong, she’s right she was stating a fact but deep down inside, I believe that part of Derek did still believe himself that she was just the intern he fell in love with and that he still saw her that way:
Back in season 4 when Derek told Meredith that he wanted marry her, have children, build them a house and have a life together and she reacted like she wasn’t ready for it, he said she was still just the intern then.
Their love story and chemistry is and was amazing ❤💔😢

He is an incredibly selfish and pathetic! Seriously after he died Meredith was much more better off. She not only became an excellent mother and surgeon but just overall an amazing human being. Everyone loved being around Meredith Grey. She really went from dark and twisty to loving and caring.

Patrick actually wanted to leave after Season 9 was done. He said it was hard when his kids would ask him what he was doing and he'd never know cause he was always working.

Secondly, that’s a toxic mindset. You should never support someone because they chose you. And she did over and over, sometimes to her own humiliation. She supported him after the death of the pregnant patient in s5 and he behaved horribly. She supported him after the shooting, the plane crash, through his hand surgeries. But supporting him doesn’t mean she should be forced to give up her ambitions and dreams.

S4 Mer starts a trial that SHE AND ONLY SHE came up with. She asked for Dereks help, as she needed a Neurosurgeon on the case. She perfected the injection alone and saved the last patient. She did it and he STOLE every inch of the credit and bragged about it. S8 Mer has the choice of going to 2 different hospitals for her fellowship. Derek pressures her to pick Harvard, because he would get a grant. Not because it would be good for her, but Bc he would get 2 million dollars to fund his research. He actually made it a point to say that she HAD to choose Harvard for him. He has not once gave a crap about her career. He even wanted her to be fired in S7, he actually broke up with her Bc she wasn’t fired. He never gave 2 shits about her or her career. He just wanted somebody who wanted him. He knows how to take advantage of her and he did it on a daily. He never apologizes when he does anything wrong hand he shames her constantly. It wasn’t about the portal veins, it was about Derek undermining her worth. She finally got the courage to stand up for herself and so he leaves and cheats with the first chick to show interest. Meredith forgave him say more than I deem fair. She worked her ass off to make herself a family and to feel appreciated. She had a life in Seattle and he didn’t even take the time to think about how she might be feeling. Marriage is about compromise, he wasn’t willing to.

At the time, the trial wasn’t a fail and you can’t possibly expect someone to complete a trial in less than a year or you are crazy. She didn’t have the time or energy to complete the trial so she handed it off, it didn’t end, it never failed. Also, it was about EXACTLY what she wanted. They would be moving FOR HER, so whatever grant he would get shouldn’t matter Bc it was supposed to be about her, but he gets cocky and he puts himself first every time.

The city you live in doesn't make you good at your job because Derek always got great opportunities in other cities (because if you're good at your job the rest will follow) but turned them down for Meredith because she wanted to stay. This one was a once in a lifetime opportunity after she almost killed his career and made him turn down other great opportunities. Mer was selfish many times before and in this instance but people only see Derek as selfish. But to each is own opinions I guess.
